Quite possibly the first article I ever read about it, many years ago:
http://www.videogames.org/html/crash.html
Kinda short, though.

Yup, great book. I want to get 'The First Quarter' if I can find a cheaper copy then what Amazon is listing. :-D
Phoneix is the other great video game book besides Ultimate History.

IMHO, I enjoyed Kent's book better. It seemed to flow better and was filled with interviews and other really interesting stuff. But Phoenix is a wonderfull read as well and I'll buy the new edition when it comes out.
I guess you should really buy both. :D

Thanks for the complements!
I'm not planning another edition of Phoenix until probably 2005. Meanwhile I'm working hard to get the 2nd edition of ABC To The VCS ready in time for CGE. I don't know if I'll succeed but I'm trying.
I also have two other books in the planning stages.
Also in the works, later this year I'll be publishing Ralph Baer's autobiography on how he invented videogames. It's really a great read and filled with original notes, schematics, internal Sanders memos, and loads of photos (including a certain guest book with a certain signature circled)!

Reading that book may be a great way to get the answers you seek as well. I just ordered mine. :)
(it's not off topic is my point)
Try Googling "video game crash" and read as much as you can. You'll get enough info I'll bet.

We ment that those two books are a wonderfull history of ALL video games -- and devote a lot of space to the Crash of 1984.
Or just do a google search. Many articles online about it.
In a nutshell, there are three reasons:
1) Rise of personal computers and dropping of prices.
2) Too many crap games on the market.
3) Confusion and no intrest from average consumers due to rapidly changing technology and above factors.

I live in canada, and the exchange is less than favourable for me too. That's why Paypal and E-bay (selling) comes in handy.
Nevetheless, Google is your friend. :)

There is a major difference in postage however. It's only $7 (US) to send the book to Canada via Global Priority. Global Priority is not available to South America. To send the book Airmail, which is comparable in shipping time, would cost over $19!

I did a Google search for the 1984 crash as I was interested and found a pretty good link to not only the crash, but a timeline for gaming of all time.

Yes, Amazon is great, but the U.S. Dollar in Argentina it´s very expensive...

I saw the cover of the 2nd edition on your site, and couldn't miss the Good Deal Games logo. What role is GDG playing in the publication? And will 2nd-edition entries be in alphabetical order instead of arbitrarily grouped? Please, please?
Also in the works, later this year I'll be publishing Ralph Baer's autobiography on how he invented videogames. It's really a great read and filled with original notes, schematics, internal Sanders memos, and loads of photos (including a certain guest book with a certain signature circled)!
This sounds wonderful. Have you landed a major publisher? This is very much the kind of book that Osborne/McGraw Hill or Prima/Random House should be doing.

Michael Thomasson of GDG did the cover and will be selling the book through his website. He is also doing a second editing of the book
The titles aren't arbitrarilly placed. They're summarized by themes i.e. all Space Invader type games are placed together in one chapter. There is an alphabetical listing of all games in the index. The stumbling point in the book right now is the inclusion of screen shots and whether they will be clear and light enough in print form.
Rolenta Press is publishing the Ralph Baer book.

Cool. Michael is, judging by my limited interactions with him, a great guy.

I'll settle for the alphabetical listing. Heh.
Yeah, black-and-white screenshots are a bugbear. Lots of diddling with brightness and contrast. Are you grabbing via emulators? That would make your screenshot life MUCH easier.

Looking forward to it!

I know you would but that was always the point of the book, to keep like-games together

I started with the emulators but with nearly 600 games in the book, it became too much. Al Yarusso at Atari Age gave me permission to use his screen shots, which are 72dpi. I upped them to 300 dpi but Michael T wasn't happy with the way they look. Thus lies the problem.
Looking forward to it!
You'll see it at CGE! And then you can tell Mark all about it since he won't be there >)

Really? O_O I finished reading it yesterday. It was very informative, but it is too bad that it only goes up to 2001.

If I had a sample 300 dpi screen and knew more about the book layout, I'd have a better idea of the problem, and could come up with a solution. But it's your project, not mine, so I'll shut up and wish you good luck. Heh.
