I don't own one, but I am pretty sure they are not. But that's enough enough to fix, just file down the plastic tabs on the inside of the console that keep the cart from being inserted and you are in business! I'd recommend taking it apart to do that so you don't get shavings inside the cart slot.
Of course, if you don't want to modify a legit SNES console, you can always pick up a cheap FC Twin to modify - I plan on modding mine eventually. The FC Twin seems to play SNES games perfectly, the NES games are not so perfect, but it still does a decent job.

Nope, the cartridge slot is identical to the larger SNES and can be modified in the exact same way.

You'd need a switch for PAL games I believe, but just for Japanese games, yeah the "tab mod" or using a passthrough like a game genie does the trick. There's no hardware check for japan/us.

Okay guys, so my favorite game as a child was Secret of Mana for SNES. I now own the SNES mini, and I just recently found they released a second Secret of Mana in Asia called seiken densetsu 3, but I am new to this whole region code thing. It is a game for the Super Famicon but the picture looks very similar to a SNES game. I don't want to order it off ebay and then get it and not be able to play it, so if someone could please explain what you mean about filing down and what part of the game, or how I could get it to work. I am not exactly the most technologically savvy person but I love to play old school games. Thanks!

Just a sanity check here; you are aware of the fact that the game is entirely in Japanese?
It has been fan-translated but that's another topic.

Yes, there is on certain games Like Donkey Kong Country 3, won't work with the game genie. I believe it's because of a special security chip inside the cart. Connect the cart directly to the console if possible.

Look inside of your cart-slot. See those little blocks of plastic sticking up? There are four, I think. SNES carts have indents on them that fit past those blocks; SFC carts fit through a different placement of blocks, so you must file 'em down to get a proper fit.
To make this easy, order one of these special screwdriver bits from NCSX: http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/NUS-45MM.html
Open the system up and then unscrew the cart slot piece (NOT the actual cart connector) from the top's underside. With the piece right in front of you, sanding down/clipping out those pieces will be a cinch. Reconnect the slot and put the top back on. There you go! :)
Japanese games use the same television signal, NTSC, so there won't be any display issues.
