Not sure if it counts as a proto but....
I might sometime soon be able to get my hands on the PENN & Teller game for Sega CD it was actually completely finished but they never released it.
Ill let ya guys know if I get it.
Will Burned Sega Cde games work without any special software?

Yeah, SEGA CD games are very easily copied.

Well doesnt look like hes got a copy.
If he can find one Ill get it and see about making it available to people who wanna play it.
Supposed to be completely finished but they never released it cuz Sega Cd was basically dead by the time it was done.
He was telling me about one of the mini games in it where you have to drive a school bus for 12 hours through the desert lol he said the play testers hated that part.
I dont get the whole "I have a proto and no one else will ever get to play it" mentality so if it gets in my hands Ill make sure the person who gets it will share.
Buyatari seems to be good about that kinda stuff so anyway dont have it yet and might not get it..keep yer fingers crossed.

Well, maybe you guys aren't aware, but Good Deal Games is trying to license it for sale. If you do get your hands on it, I'd contact Mike first to make sure those plans are still active.

Was this some kinda crack at me Sothy?
If so let me explain something. Most of the protos I have and ALL the unleased ones I own are for modern systems. I don't find any of these at thrift stores or buy them on ebay. They are all private deals.
90% of the time with this stuff somebody's job is on the line. If you work for a game company and you release the ROMS to someone outside your company you WILL BE FIRED and also SUED. Sometimes someone will contact me after they left a company and they just don't care. Like your pinball (which should be up on Mikes site soon) but most of the time its a big deal.
I make a promise not to sell , trade and or dump any protos without first getting permission from the seller and its a promise that I intend to keep. One day when these systems are long dead I may be able to release these somehow but for now you should be happy they weren't just thrown out and lost forever.
I could go into the "I don't really believe in the dumping of any modern systems for any reason" thing but its not as important to me as keeping of my promise to these guys who risk lawsuits and losing their jobs to send me protos which would otherwise be destroyed.
I am also hesitant with the 10% becuase it just doesn't look good to those giving me those protos to see me releasing ANY prototypes.
"Ohh no John thats not your Final Fantasy prototype I released on the net I got that one from another guy and he said ok."
Most of these games suck and I do bring them to the shows for anyone to check out. If you want to play something email me prior to Philly,CGE or Cinciclassic and I WILL BRING it. You can play it all you want.
In fact I am bringing Worms Pinball for Dreamcast to Cinciclassic in a couple weeks for a possible tournment. It is the funnest unreleased game I have ever played and looks very complete.
I am sorry you guys want to play these game so bad but I value my promise and the jobs of my friends over this. I am sure those of you who are reasonable can understand this.
BTW: Sothy I do know someone besides Good Deal games with the Smoke and Mirrors proto but he backed out of selling me his personal protos (about 2 weeks ago actuallly) for fear that it might somehow come back to bite him in the ass. He did say however that if he ever finds a new job outside the industry he will sell his protos to me. Its just a matter of time on this one.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever contact Penn & Teller and asked them their opinion about releasing the game? I don't know if they own any rights to it or anything (I would imagine the company would own those), but I'm curious if they would even want the game released.
Oh an I totally understand what your saying. I've talked to classic programmers who are fearful of letting their unreleased games get out to this day! Many have a nasty fear of Infogrames for some reason (have they ever cracked down on anybody?).

Mike (good deal games) met with Penn and Teller after one of their vegas shows at CGE 2001.
I don't know what was said. Yoo-hoo Mike you out there? But I got the feeling they were all for it. There was a specific holdup on the deal but I don't remember what it was.

I seem to remember Mike having to pay pretty hefty fees to use their names, though, so it's not like Penn & Teller are completely hunky-dory over it.
And buyatari, for what it's worth I don't think he was being sarcastic. You've done this in the past with a PSX game someone sent you, haven't you?

@Redeye- Sothy sent me a game and asked that I post it for downloads. I had a few requests of him due to legal reasons and he complied with them. To make a long story short I did get the authors contact information and made plans for it to be hosted on Mike Gedeon's web site. www.videogameconnection.com
It hasn't happened yet but only because Mike and I are unsure what steps you need to do to host a ROM on a website. We both only have very limited knowledge of front page.
You have ROMs on your website don't you? If you could email Mike Mgedeon216@aol.com or myself I am sure we could go ahead and get this thing posted.

Buyatari, wasnt being sarcastic..
As for the penn and teller game thing **shrug** guess it aint in teh cards. I dont think im gonna get my hands on it. But I can see why the one dude is having trouble with the whole selling it thing. If Id ever ran across that one itd get on the internet for anyone with a cdburner to be able to enjoy. I guess to some people its better to make copies of an already made game for a dead system and then sell them to people at cge or something. Personally I think people lose sight of the hobby when the $$$$ start flashing.

Okay, gang. I'm now ready, able, and willing to share my copy of Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors with the world. Anyone wanna walk me through the process of creating usable ISOs out of my betas? And who wants to host the ISOs after I've made 'em?

I believe the Assembler folks have considerable experience at this kinda thing.
And that's great to hear Zach, much kudos to you - though I hope this doesn't degenerate into yet another arguement about whether or not unreleased games should be freely available to all or not - that one's been done to death a thousand times.

No doubt. And, hey, if I'd paid $1500 for Smoke and Mirrors, I'd probably be less willing to give it away. :)
I would've loved for Michael to engineer a quasi-official release, but the legal and personal issues between P&T and the lawyer-weasels in charge of Absolute's assets were just too much for him (or anyone else, I imagine) to overcome.

I saw this up and running at CGE 2004 and was blown away. Though I know the game is unplayable at a certain point (long-lost info in the manual is needed or something similar), I would love to be able to play this at my leisure. Let me know when a copy is burned and what you'd like in return or $$$-wise. Thanks for doing this for the Sega CD fans.

Okay, so I used CDRWIN v3.9K to make .BIN and .CUE files of both game discs. Disc 1 is 384MB zipped, and Disc 2 is 164MB zipped. Anyone got enough webspace and bandwidth to host these? I sure as heck don't.

While I don't have webspace or bandwith to spare, i'm willing to seed a torrent for awhile :)

Cool beans. Question, though: does anyone else here use BT? I just wanna make sure as many people can get it as possible.
PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a CD-R with the zipped files.

Ha, weren't you guys supposed to send me a copy like a year ago so I could do this?
Anyway, yeah. Bit Torrent is the easiest way, I figure you post a thread here with a mini tutorial on using a BT client, and then a link to the Penn & Teller torrent, and buddabing.

I know this story from the inside. Fact is that Mike
is full of bullshit and lies. We "OlderGames" spent
the better half of 2 years clearing up the legal side
from Absolute Entertainment's part of the deal
and basically Mr. Thomasson thought he'd fire
off a licensing agreement that was seen by the
P&T camp as insulting to say the least.
In the end he screwed us over one too many
times and this is just one case of his sheer
stupidity in motion. We left GDG to do
his own projects about a year ago. We
pay our partners their fair share and
have everything going for us. He's gone
quiet. You want to know who was really
behind the majority of GDG's releases?
Take a wild guess.
And that huge fee someone mentioned
P&T asking for to use their name is
nothing more than $5 per copy... do
not assume anything when it comes
to GDG.
I do not know who is feeding you
all this bullshit but it really needs
to stop. If its Mike Thomasson
-aka- Good Deal Games then
I wouldn't be surprised since
we pretty much shut him out
of our future because of his
blatant dishonesty and exploitation
of the classic gaming scene.
The moral of the story? The P&T
deal is dead and the only way this
would ever see a release is in grey
form. Do what you will. :)

By the way I am happy to see you guys getting
this out. It's a fun game although we never
owned the second disk although GDG handed
it out liberally behind our backs...
Kudos gentlemen! 8-)

Yikes! Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that another party was involved in the negotiations with P&T and Absolute, I wasn't aware that Michael had distributed copies of the discs I supplied him with, and I certainly didn't intend to reopen any old wounds. I just wanna get this game out there for people to play (and to figure out).

Don't sweat it man. I'm just getting sick of his
lies that never seem to end. The moral of the story
is that it is all over with now and we left him and
his lies behind. We could care less about him now.
I personally think it is great that you are getting
this game out. I believe there are a lot of people
who feel the same way. Cheers! :D
