What is the cheapest system to collect for, that isn't pre NES? I'm talking about the system, controllers, cables, games, adapaters, you name it.

So far, from what I've seen, the Sega Genesis appears to be the cheapest. For around 40 bucks, plus shipping, you can snag a Genesis, with a Sega CD, a bunch of controllers and hook ups, plus about 10 to 15 games.

Not a bad deal at all.

Plus when it comes to getting the Carts, the Genesis carts seem to go for the lowest amount, although buying them individually, with the shipping charges, can add alot to the final cost.

There aren't too many Genesis games or accessories that command huge bucks.

I've seen Night Trap for the Sega CD go for around 30 bucks, but that seems to be the most expensive game I've seen so far.

In comparison, just a S-Video cable for the Jaguar, can go for 40 bucks.

Give the genesis system time, and it will become much more collectible. You have to understand the genesis is a newer system by about 5 to 6 years (best guess). SNES is hot now, since more people had it. Genesis games are a great value right now, except for most sports games.

I'd say PlayStation since you can still find everything just about everywhere.

I'd tend to disagree. I still haven't gotten a PSone, from a pseudo retro game standpoint, because all the PSone games that I saw around town, were still going for some pretty high prices.

At GameStop, I was amazed what they were charging for old used PS1 games.

I'm talking $14.99, $19.99, $24.99, $29.99. There was nothing I saw below $14.99, and most were much higher than $14.99.

I just find it hard to pay more than 10 bucks, with tax and everything, for an old school game.

I understand that people collect them, and that they might be rare, and if they have the box and manual and everything, but I'm just trying to play a game. I don't care about all the other stuff.

I would prefer to get games for 5 bucks or less.

I would say on the other hand the SMS, most collectors haven't jacked
up the price of the games. They can be found at most flea markets
and some collectors for under $5 each. As far as a machine to play
it on. There is a store here in Chicago called The Music Recyclery
has Sega Game Gears for $20 and you could pick up a Master Gear
convertor for another $5. So you can have 2 systems for the price of one.

Go for genesis. Lots of games, lots of good games, cheap equipment, and the power base convertor makes for good times with the master system's games (provided you buy either a Genesis model 1, or a cdx).

You may want to consider the Dreamcast. There are only about 225 games to collect and the exactly which games are rare haven't been determined yet. Sure, there are a few titles that are called rare that sell well on ebay but they may be more in demand than "rare". This is the system I'm concentrating on right now.

Yep, same here.

If you're using Gamestop as your only shopping avenue, then you're probably right, but your selection of Genesis games is going to be shit, and that's just no fun for a collector.

If you open your avenues to everything else, including the dreaded eBay, I think you'll find that I'm either right or at least much harder to argue with.

Behold.

Genesis games at $5 or less. Lots of 'em:

PlayStation games at $5 or less. And whaddaya know... there's even MORE of 'em to choose from:

i totally disagree here, you can't get a ps under 60? with 2 controllers and all cables and modded

and the games are nearly impossible to get under 10?, this is one of the most expensive not-up-to-date systems available (yeah don't say neo geo now :p)

For Playstation, buy the big lots. You can get a huge part of the PS library complete for 2 to 3 bucks each if you buy the bulk auctions that are on Ebay all the time - PS is actually one of the systems that would be cheaper (except for a very few games) to buy on Ebay that to buy locally.

A big part of the DC library can be had under your 5 dollar limit, too.

Genesis, as mentioned, is very cheap, and it's easier to get Genesis games complete than NES/SNES.

Definetely Genesis. Thats mostly what you see at the thrifts and fleas. Some thrifts here have had the same systems and games sitting on their shelves for months

Go with Gensis..start with the rare games and then you can fill in your collection later.

Or dreamcast was a very good idea....get the disks now before they take a beating.

In my experience the games for the Mega Drive (Genesis) are the cheapest to get.

I find Master System is the cheapest. Consoles regularly go for $15 AUS and games for $3 AUS.

Mega Drive/Genesis is probably second cheapest, with most consoles and games going for little more than Master System stuff.

I agree with Joe - cheapness and availability are key. In my area PSone gets the nod in both categories.

The other advantage the PSone has, in my opinion, is that nobody considers it a "collectors item" yet. Even the early, longbox stuff, is readily available in my estimation. Microplay had the R5 Mr. Driller in with it's "Buy 2, Get 1 Free" stuff. Comix Zone for Genesis, an R3, they want $30 for (less 25%, but still that's way too much).

And, with the system being dead, the new games are $10. You can almost guarantee you'll get a decently rare game and you can price compare between EB/Walmart/wherever to get the game cheap.

SHIPPING! Shipping hurts eBay's use as a $5 or under collecting tool for any system.

Also, with PSOne, the CDs can be scratched, and you may never see it. Granted, if you're hording, with no regard ot condition, PSOne may be better.

I, of course, say Genesis. They can't even give away some sports AND nonsports games away, even brand new. FuncostopEB have yet to lower ALL games to sub $10 prices for PSOne, where PSOne can still cost $10 a game on average.
