Question for you TV techies about Light Guns

I just picked up Point Blank 1 and Point Blank 3 (w/ Guncon) for playstation and have been playing the crap out of them... but it got me to wondering

how exactly does the light gun work? how does it calibrate itself, how does it know where it's shooting? and what/where you're supposed to be shooting?

wow, didn't realize there was a thread that at detailed such technical things already in place. thanks for the heads up..

and man, that's some wacky technology

but i think there are still some questions unanswered... why in point blank do you need to calibrate to center of screen when you load it up, and not on light guns for other systems?
