View Full Version : What systems can't currenlty be emulated?

What game systems can't currently be emulated, or if they can, it's extremely difficult and you need a very special setup, etc.

Basically, what I'm asking is what games systems don't have an extremely friendly emulation environment?

For example, i have emulators and roms for the Genesis, Super Nes and Turbografx that all work very well, without me being the most knowledgeable computer guy.

But what about all the other systems?

And which ones at this current time, under no instances can be emulated?

I'd say the channel f and the 7800 are both hardup for good emulators...MESS isn't very good for the 7800, and the channel f only has a couple games dumped.

Has there been a Sega Saturn and a 3DO emulator? If there's a working Saturn emulator I'd buy games for it, and if there's one for 3DO I'd sell my system and keep the four games I have for it. :D

Ah, but there IS a very good Sega CD/32X emulator now -- Gens. And it plays Genesis games great as well. I've tested all three styles out on it and it works nicely. Not perfect yet, but well.

Yeah, Gens play 32X games very nicely. There are a few that don't work though.

Is there a PS one emulator that will play tons of Psone games?

I know Bleem, but not that many games work under Bleem, right?

Microvision. Microvision. Microvision.
Hurry up and emulate this, somebody!
I have an irrational need to play Microvision bowling on my G4 Powerbook!

There's one that gets pretty good results. I think it's called epsx, or something along those lines. Hell, I've even been able to run a PAL version of Beatmania without a single timing issue (though dropped frames were common on the computer I was using.)

And speaking of Playstation related emulation, someone hurry up and add System573 support to MAME, damn it. It's pretty much just a trumped up PSX with some extra I/O and audio hardware, and a little extra memory. I want to play DDR Extreme on my dual G4!!! To hell with Stepmania! Heh.

The best is Emurayden .. It's played every game i've thrown at it almost perfectly.

Yeah, there's Saturn emu out there, but you gotta have a hella powerful system and even then it's still not near full speed (or even much playable from what I understand.)

System573? Do you mean System 11? That's Namco's PSX based hardware. There's an emulator out there for that, but it only supports a hand full for games. Works rather well tho. I thought I read somewhere as to why MAME isn't supporting PSX based hardware, but I can't remember where I saw it or what it said. Mabe sence tho.

And there's FreeDO (http://www.freedo.org/) for 3DO. Haven't used it, don't think I will and it seems pretty early, but there it is.

Someone (I think it was here) once wrote that Sega bought the rights to GiriGiri, the most advanced Saturn emulator (at one time, at least). They did a similar thing with KGen 98 (used in the PC Smash Packs).

There's no complete emulator for the CDi at this point, either.

System573 is Konami's arcade hardware based largely on the PSX specs. And in Japanese, 573 can be pronounced "go na mi," which is why you see the numbers 573 on all kinds of Konami stuff.

The psx emulator is called epsxe. Check it out at www.epsxe.com

And the famous saturn emulator is (i believe) satourne. It's being programmed by a french team. If you can understand some basic french, check out

I think I just recently read a news story somewhere(gamespot?) that said that Sega has developed a Saturn emulator and was planning to do some kind setup where you pay to download and play Saturn games on it. Japan only, of course.

While entirely possible to add Playstation based hardware to MAME now, you likely won't be seeing it for a while. I believe there are a few reasons, the most significant being the Golden Tee reason, i.e. the hardware still makes money so they don't want to include it. No sense in getting a manufacturer who is still making money all ticked off by potentially cutting into their revenue. Also on the legal end there's the trouble that Aaron Giles could bring. If I remember correctly, the settlement between Sony and Connectix included him not being able to touch anything Playstation related. Even if Aaron did not contribute to that hardware in MAME, the combination of it being in MAME and Aaron being such a high profile contributor could lead to unwanted attention.

Even if the hardware was included, it might be somewhat disappointing. You would be limited to games 3 years old or older (unless you compile your own), and with MAME being concerned with accuracy and preservation you would only have software emulation - none of the 1600x1200 anti-aliased 3D accelerated stuff we're used to in PSX emulators.

And naturally the protection on the System 573 games is a bit of a pain...

What about the more obscure systems that no one really seems to have, like the Bandai Pippin @World? I'd want to play some of those games to see just how good (or possibly horrible) they were.

Jorpho

Ah, but the Pippin was Power PC based. Macintosh emulator programmers have had very poor luck in trying to emulate the PPC. Read all about it at http://www.emaculation.com/ppc.php.

Right, that's the Giri Giri emulator Jorpho was talking about. I've been trying to find more info about it but so far all I've heard is you have to have a pretty powerful setup and it won't play full speed. Someone on another board was discussing getting a hold of a hacked version and said that was his expirence with it.

@davidbrit2, ok I know what you're talking about now. When kingpong mentioned Golden Tee, I remembered hearing about 573. And his explination as to why it's not in MAME is pretty much what I remember hearing (encription and the fact that it's still making money.)

I doubt any of the current systems (Xbox, PS2, GameCube) can be emulated at all, or at more than 1.5 fps at least.
