View Full Version : My first system launch day purchase

I hope you're ready for a long story because this is the first, and it will probably be the only time, that I bought a system the day it came out and I'm still jumping off the walls about it!

Best Buy was having a deal today where if you traded in 5 qualifying games that you would get the DSi XL system for free. Well after finding 5 games that would work, including two from my collection :'( But it was awesome and totally worth it!!!!

I was one of 5 people there before the store opened. The first guy got there at 7 am, the next guy showed up at 8:45 and then I got there at 9:45, someone showed up at 10:15 and the last person got there at about 10:30. It was great to talk with the other people there. One guy had heard about it from another forum but the other people there had just read the ad online or in the flyer.

They were really well organized and before the store opened the manager came out and got your name and your games to check that they qualified, the first guy had to try a couple times but he was able to get it. The second guy in line got his with no problems and I didn't have any problems either. A woman with her 5 year old son and to try a couple times and the last guy to show up only had 5 games and 2 of them didn't work, more on what he did in a minute.

I traded in: Riddick PS3, COD 4 PS3, Race Pro 360, Wheelman 360 and Super Mario Galaxy PS2?

So they opened at 10:45ish which was really nice of them and I go and check out the 360 games to use the coupon for $10 off, I finally got Watchmen for a price I was happy to pay, 5 bucks. Then I go and join the lineup at Customer Service. I think I was the 4th person to get it. I choose the Bronze one and thinking that I was going to go with the Burgundy but after looking at both in person I decided that the Bronze would probably hide wear and tear a bit better. Now there was the guy who was missing two games, so he went and bought two games off the floor and traded them in all at the same time. It was pretty funny to see as the cashier had to open the games only to turn around and trade them in.

I was out of there in about 25 minutes which included the time that I spent looking at games to use the coupon on. During that time I think only 2 of the Burgundy systems sold so maybe I passed up a future rarity but I'm really happy with the one that I picked up.

You can check out pictures of me opening it here: LINK (http://s210.photobucket.com/albums/bb141/jcalder8/Nintendo%20DSi%20XL%20launch%20day/)

I know this could have gone in the "Finds" thread but for me this is more a story about the whole experience rather than the deal that I got on it, but mods may feel otherwise. I would enjoy hearing other people's stories about getting a system on launch day.

I started lining up at 10:15am. There were about 30-40 people infront of me. Most of them lineup for $500 gift card draw. As soon as the draw was over, everyone starts to leave. I thought most of them lineup for the DSi deal, but apparently they weren't. I was the 6th person for the trade. I picked up the Burgundy DSi XL. Games I traded

New Super Mario DS
Pokemon Diamond DS
Pokemon Pearl DS
Fire Emblem DS
Valkyria Chronicles PS3

New Super Mario & Valkyria Chronicles were duplicate. I was going to sell both, but trade them in instead. I wasn't much of a Pokemon fan, but I did purchased both for $19.99. There were 2-3 kids lining up expecting to get DSi XL for free, but they were 1-2 game short for the trade. Feel sorry for them.

I traded in: ... Super Mario Galaxy PS2?

Should have held onto that PS2 version of Galaxy, those are rare - in fact that may be the only one in the world.

Seriously though, congrats on a day-one purchase! Always fun, those are.

I did a similar thing with the Wii, cept it wasn't launch it was when Target/any store got about 40 every 2 weeks or whatever. So it was serious shit. Basically couple of people ran to the video games bought it and ran out. I was one of them. /sigh the things I did for that Wii just to be disappointed.

Wow I just got a sudden burst of "I want to play my DS, I think I'm going to buy more games for it" mood. Heh I'm still rocking the big fat DS with the tiny ass stylus. Way to fix that: tape it to a pencil.

Why would you trade in your games? You realize this is Digital Press, right? We don't get rid of anything.

Seriously though, I was considering picking up a DSi XL until Nintendo made the purchase pointless by announcing the 3DSi last week.

Does anyone have an ad or something specific about this trade-in deal? Was it at the midnight opening only?

Well it is either that or left the product sit there collecting dust. Beside I tried to sell some of my games, but no one wants to pay more than $5. I might as well take the opportunity to convert total of $60-70 game value and get $200 DSi XL.

If it hadn't been for the deal I would have waited too. The 3DSi looks like it has something new to offer, gameplay wise, unlike the DSi XL.

I could care less about the 3DS, honestly.
I grabbed the XL with the trade deal too, and I'm glad that I did.
Nice to finally upgrade my launch day DS phat.

I love the design of DSi XL, but it's a shame that all of the colors they have are fugly.

I feel like a loser for paying full price now...thanks.

I have a decent library of DS games and hardly ever use my DS Lite - always felt I was squinting too much. I like the XL much more. The screen of course, but also the pen is so much better. SD slot is excellent as well...and I can take cool pictures of myself...YES!!!.

Anyways, a little disappointed they did not make the buttons larger, but I'll live.

I don't think the 3D system should distract you from this system, espeacially if your willing to trade in your older DS...

I seriously considered doing the trade in thing. I have plenty of qualifying games and i figured i could buy them all back for less than the cost of the dsi xl later on. But like a previous poster pointed out...this is digital press. We don't get rid of anything. I couldn't bring myself to do it. I'll probably grab one when the 3ds comes out and i can get one for like half the price...system launches are great though, I'm glad to hear you had a good experience with it

I have a TigerDirect gift card and I keep waiting for the XL to appear on their site so I can order it.

Otherwise I'm going to have to settle for a normal DSi, but I don't want to.

I pre-ordered the original PS1 and the Dreamcast. I will never do that again, unless Sega releases another console.

The only systems I buy on launch day are Nintendo's. Always a triple-A game ready at launch.

Do not see the point of buying an Xbox or PS when it comes out as we always have to wait a year for a good game to come out. And it is SO overprice when they launch, I just feel bad for anyone who paid 699 for their PS3 on launch day.

Personally I would just wait until they do have it. I'm sure they'll get it eventually.
