PS3 Won't Read Discs

Hey folks, I've got a 40GB PS3 that has stopped reading discs. Not just games, but DVDs and Blu-Ray movies too. I'm guessing the drive is shot, so I'm wondering what my best option for repair is. I don't want to send it back to Sony because it's too costly and there's the possibility I'd be sent a different refurbished unit. Any recommendations?

If you feel comfortable opening up yourself.. There are plenty of guides online and you can buy refurbished lenses on eBay for around 25$ish. A whole drive for around 50$ish.. maybe less.

I wouldn't send it into Playstation either if you want the same one. I tried to send mine in and almost lost it. They apparently send it to a distribution center that decides whether to replace it or return it. They'll send you another one and send your original unit to Japan.. My demo console almost got replaced for a retail unit that way.
