what are the best games on the SNES for older gamers that are sick of mario and donkey kong country?
are there any chilling games that aren't for kids?

Clock Tower maybe? I can't think of many 16 bit games that were genuinely adult in nature, even if they were rated M.
Here's a game I saw the other day that looks pretty creepy. A Japanese side scroller called King of Demons.

Edit: And by "16-bit" I mean consoles. The 16 bit computers had plenty of these kinds of games.

There's not a lot to pick from.
Try:
1. Out of this World / Another World
2. Flash back
3. Doom
4. Mortal Kombat series
If you want a horror game, Clock Tower was released on the SFC - [link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clock_Tower:_The_First_Fear)] (shit vxkens beat me to it!)
Although, this topic makes me wonder - how many adult-porn games were released in Japan? Any? I mean actually released at retail, not pirated image shows.

Soul Blazer is a very deep game, believe it or not. I played it as a kid, loved it, played it as an adult when I understood what the game was saying, loved it even more.

Out of this World scared the hell out of me as a kid. Mainly because of that monster in the beginning.:o

That's pretty interesting actually. Now that I think of it, a large proportion of the "adult" oriented software for SNES and Genesis were computer ports. Out of this World, Doom, Shadow of the Beast, Wolf 3D, etc. Genesis in particular got a lot of Amiga ports its first couple of years.
I wouldn't consider games like Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, etc "adult" oriented games. Games like that are basically fake "mature" games aimed at teenagers. Like I said though, I can't think of many console games from that era that were genuinely not for kids.
Video games weren't as mainstream back them and there wasn't a large market for adult oriented games. Video games were largely a kids thing for the greater part of the 80's and 90's. Now that those kids have grown up it has become an adult thing as well, and the market for adult games has grown with them.

Super Metroid. There is no way that's a "kid's" game, at least not in the traditional sense. It's dark, moody, and features a sci-fi bounty hunter babe!
Also Super Contra 3 can get pretty dark and graphic, as can Super Castlevania 4. I'm an adult, and I love those games because they are "more adult".

Having the capability to indiscriminately kill hostages provided a suprisingly dark tone in Blackthorne.

Doom Troopers was multi-platform, but allows for decapitation shots and a fair amount of gore.

SOS / Septentrion probably would'nt appeal to youngsters.

And I suppose an adult might better grasp the homo-erotic theme of muscle men, so consider....
Cho Aniki: Bakuretsu Rantouden

or a personal favorite of mine...
Deae Tonosama Appare Ichiban

Demonic themed games include....

Zombies Ate My Neighbors might appeal to you. You go around saving neighbors, shooting zombies and other monsters in over 50 levels. If you're at all into movies with giant ants, giant babies, chainsaw guys or evil dolls I'd recommend it to you.
Here's a video for you if it at all interests you. Its eleven minutes long, You don't really have to watch the whole thing but just to give you an idea...

I would say that fighting games, RPGs (generally, anyway), and puzzlers all attract wide demographics.
And kudos for mentioning Clock Tower in the very first reply. Not much replay value, but I still love it so...

thanks for the replies!
i knew that super metroid would be on the list straight up. i never played it as a young'un but loved it as a 27 yo (3 years ago).
there are certainly some games in there that i will look into. Another Word/Flashback etc grabbed me as adult orientated, as does the SNES version of Prince of Persia. i'm not really into horror games, they're more for teens i would think....but certainly some RPGs could be worth a look.
the reason why i ask is that i own the Super Famicom game Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie and it's fantastic. i'm enjoying it more now than what i did as a huge Robotech nerd when i was 15.
but i know these aren't adult games per se but Super Pang and Pocky and Rocky are also at the top of my list. i guess 'all ages' games can qualify as good adult games, too.
i guess adult games on any older system are more difficult to find...it makes game hunting exciting again for me :p

Shadowrun is slightly censored so it's not as gritty as something you would expect from the type of story it's trying to tell, but it's still awesome and has an interesting cyberpunk/fantasy storyline that an adult could appreciate.
On another level, it's also the first game I played where you could gun NPCs down in the street if they annoyed you.
The Genesis version is a completely different game and is even better in some ways.

Demon's Crest, Blackthorne, King of Demons, Doom Troopers, Out of This World and such are good choices.
Run Saber is one that hasn't been mentioned yet that has a pretty cool "mature" feel to it. Some of the bosses were pretty gnarly.

I'm glad everyone is thinking Shadowrun, I thought that was the obvious choice.
Otherwise? Not really. Shadowrun is a tough game for a kid to really "get." Most other games I have a feeling a kid wouldn't have much trouble understanding even if it wasn't made for them.

Soul Blazer, Shadowrun, and Demon's Crest are great choices.
Clock Tower, Castlevania, Contra 3, and Super Metroid are obvious choices.
You should try Cybernator and Hagane: the Final Conflict.

I ummed and ahhed about Cybernator.
Great game, though.

I always felt that SNES games like Actraiser, Soul Blazer, Final Fantasy IV and VI, Mortal Kombat II, Out Of This World, Doom and many sports titles would be more appreciated by an adult audience. I felt Enix games were the best choices for adults looking for something serious and mature, like 7th Saga.
I miss those days when it was taboo to release an overtly "adult" game. Nowadays, all the big name games are M-rated fair. At one point, I had about 8 M-rated games and bought Sega & Sonic All-Stars Racing and later New Super Mario Brothers Wii out of desperation just so I could have lighter fair on hand.
Games like God Of War 3, Heavy Rain and No More Heroes 2 are all great but sometimes you need a family-friendly game in the mix. Excessive violence, salty language and bare breasts can get tiresome when everyone is seemingly doing it.
