help me identify this SNES game

So my new room mate was talking to me about how much he loved secret of mana and we were chatting about it when it quickly became clear we were talking about two different games. Now he wants to know what game he is talking about, and frankly, so do I. The SNES might be my favorite system, and I can't believe I can't identify this game.

According to him, it was an action RPG, ala SoM or Terranigma (both of which he mentioned in conjunction with it). In it, you had three playable characters. So far, it sounds like Secret of Mana or Illusion of Gaia, but this is where it gets weird. Apparently, you were able to choose your three characters from a larger pool, and it affected the story, such that you might meet up with the other characters that you DIDN'T pick.

So, uh, what the hell? Does this game exist, or is he just confused and crazy?

Maybe he is confusing it with The 7th Saga, where you do pick a character from a bunch, and you do eventually meet up with characters that you didn't pick.

Going with the lowball here, but is it Secret Of Evermore? I don't remember picking from a pool of characters, though.

excuse the spelling, but isn't Seiken Denetsu 3 like that as well, but he likely would have mentioned a Japanese import as well unless he is familiar with the english rom on emulator

Stonecutter - it turns out you were right. I would NEVER have guessed that. Thanks - my room mate and I are both very glad to have that mystery put to rest ... and I guess maybe I should start looking for a translation of Seiken Densetsu 3 and start familiarizing myself with it.

Evan_G - that occurred to me a few minutes after the post, and showed him some screenshots. He responded "no, it had a girl with a floppy hat." Weird, the things you remember.

Lagoon maybe? I never played it but I know it is an action RPG.
