View Full Version : NAVA Gamer's Meeting, April 24th: "NAVA is the BOMB"

NAVA = North Atlantic Videogame Aficionados. It's FREE, and YOU are invited to attend. Previously at NAVA...
- The tournament was "Typing of the Dead" and former DP employee Raj out-gunned (out-typed) all competition.
- Kid Ice brought his Air Raid game, complete in box. You really have to check out the pictures.
- The store's previous high score on Congo Bongo was smashed. Over 69,000 on a single quarter, using an 8-way joystick!
- Games and systems traded hands between attendees who brought their own trade boxes.
- Pictures tell it best:

The summer is almost upon us and we're ready to EXPLODE with anticipation. How ready? How about a whole day of explosive game competition. No really. Literally, games with lots of bomb action. We never do anything subtle around here.
For starters, This month's arcade high score challenge will be City Bomber. It's one of those games that you never hear about so I don't expect a lot of City Bomber masters turning up. However, you've got a few weeks to practice at the store or on MAME, and it really IS a fun game. It will be set up on FREE PLAY for the whole day at NAVA. The person who logs in the highest score by 8pm will get a $20 gift certificate for the Digital Press store and will be added to the new "house champion" tournament plaque on the Wall of Fame located just above the arcade section of the store. Get your practicing in now!
We hinted at getting a 10-player Saturn Bomberman game going last month, but this month we're gonna do it for real. If you've never played Saturn Bomberman with 9 other lunatics, you haven't lived. This will be set up all day long, with a climactic 6pm tournament to find who's the best at conquering complete chaos. In addition, we'll be running mini-tournaments for Kaboom! and Canyon Bomber, both great excuses to bust out an Atari 2600 and some paddles.
Get your trade boxes in order. Get your game face on. It's NAVA time!
When: Saturday, April 24th, noon to midnight.
Where: Digital Press Videogames: http://tinyurl.com/yscakm
What happens: Gaming, trading, tournaments, big prizes! Extra game stations are set up around the store. Attendance is FREE. Half price for kids!
What can I bring?: Snacks, soda and beer are always appreciated. Cakes have been very popular as well.

Oooh ... City Bomber looks like a cross between Road Fight, Bump N Jump and Action Fighter.

It will be a nice tournament.
Can't wait till the next fighting tournament comes out, be it 3rd Strike, SSF4, etc., or even another score attack this upcoming NAVA Gamer's Meeting.
Bomberman for the Saturn= only the guy with the gloves throwing the bomb over bricks can show what true bomb throwers are made of:vamp:
See you all there this month...

I'm going to try to make this one, but we are doing a 5K walk in the am, so we'll see how it goes. Although, I do think a 5K walk deserves NAVA and White Castle, don't you?

ABSOLUTELY.
Whenever anybody comments on my eating a Snickers after exercising, I explain that I'm going to eat the Snickers whether or not I exercise, so I exercise to mitigate the ill effects of the junk food.
City Bomber looks great! I'm going to have to start figuring it out in MAME.
Hope to see you guys in a few weeks.

Good philosophy...I like it.
In any event, I should be there with a few trade boxes. I'm still looking for Sega cartridges for the VIC-20 if anyone has any.

So I've been playing City Bomber for the last 30-45 minutes. I like it. Seems to me like a cross between Bump N' Jump and Spy Hunter.
It's not an easy game, but I'm beginning to get the hang of it. I think I managed to get about 217,000 so far, using an old Logitech Wingman with a Radio Shack DB15-to-USB adapter. I can't wait to play it with a real arcade joystick.

I just want to let everyone know that they will all lose at Canyon Bomber. Don't go crying when you lose, you've been told well in advance. Also, I will be bringing an Amiga CD32 system in box for sale. This contains everything, including all of the wires to hook it up and the manuals with the exception of the joypad. Although you can use a genesis controller with this system to play the games.

Hmm...should I practice City Bomber or Canyon Bomber....
...actually the space normally occupied by my VCS has been taken over by an O2 (my youthful ward Vectorman can confirm). Lucky for you Mike, your skills are more overrated than Radiohead. If the unlikely day ever arrives we're both sober at the same time, there's gonna be a showdown.

If you're going to bring in sobriety into the picture, I'm not sure the showdown will take place :)
I think canyon bomber is one of those games that's fun with a buzz on.

Anybody have any Nintendo Game & Watch units that they'd be willing to part with? Been growing my collection and eBay has been a bid sniping nightmare with those things lately.
I don't have much in the way of trades but I can make cash offer(s).

I will be bringing a ton of stuff I am selling from my collection. Colecovision cartridges, 5200 cartridges, 7800 cartridges, my Boxed 2600 games, and some 2600 homebrews/repros. I will also have a few systems like a Sears Video Arcade II, boxed Master System and a Retroduo.
I might be willing trade for arcade boards or Neo Geo stuff.
I'm also specifically looking for a bare SNES console in decent looking condition.

As mentioned in my new thread in the Arcade forum, I picked up an empty arcade cabinet this evening.
If anyone coming to NAVA tomorrow is looking to get rid of an arcade joystick, I'm interested.
For that matter, I don't yet know everything I need to know about building a MAME machine, but I suspect I'll need an Ipac as well, so I'll be looking for that as well.
See you guys tomorrow.

SAW THE TREEs
Kid Ice
04-24-2010, 10:27 PM
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas
The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.
There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

I am going to be posting my Game Boy Camera pictures and movie soon. There was a guy from Clifton named Washington who brought in Super Street IV for the 360. I tried getting his Gamertag but I did not get the opportunity to write it down before he left. If anyone has it or better yet, if Washington is reading this now, please PM his gamertag to me. Had a great time!

I don't think I have ever spent so much time hanging around an arcade machine and simply competing for score. That was probably the highlight of the day for me. Watching other people play and coming up with scoring strategies as a group was a blast. I look forward to this next time.
