View Full Version : The OTHER Mario Movie
Hello Everyone,
I stumbled across this the other night.
http://www.pelleas.net/hm/26.shtml
I've been hearing a few rumors since then, that a recording of this video had been floating around on Kazaa and other P2P systems. Anyone have this? Anyone know anything about it, or not? Thanks.

I've been looking for a recording of this for a long while, computer file or actual VHS, and found nothing more then a single black and white screen shot that was in Famitsu magazine. I'd kill to see the film in its entirety, and kill again to see it subbed.

Is it an animated mario movie? Cover art looks cool.
I'd also kill a couple of people to see it.
@ubersaurus (great saurus): You still have that black and white screenshot? I would love to see it. I would love to see the actual movie too, just like you.
"After doing an extensive research quest, I found out quite a bit about the "lost" Mario movie. It was directed by a man named HAKA, a popular Japanese director. It was released July 20, 1986. It was actually quite a popular movie in Japan. It was about 60 minutes long, and had Mario rescuing the princess.
While no one ever gave an official reason as to why it did not make an American release, the guesses are because of the sexuality and racism that is considered ok in Japan. You can actuallyfind the movie off of EBAY, or a P2P file program. Such as Kazaa, Grokster or Morpheus. I got mine off of Kazaa and it is pretty decent. I burned it to DVD."

I just started looking for it on KaZaA and I haven't found anything yet. How big was it, what was the quality? I found Mario Bros. Super Show episodes and some other commercials and stuff, but nothing on this flick.

@ubersaurus: Thanks for the image. That really has me curious now.

This has be curious too... if the movie came out in 1986, then why is there a catapiler from Super Mario World in it. Very curious indeed.
Of course, I'm not the least bit intrested in a movie that is only in Japanese. No sir. *starts looking on Kazaa*

There is some mysterious vortex into which certain Japanese movies fall into. They NEVAR return.
would somebody please tell me they've heard of Tamala 2010 so I can stop thinking that I'm crazy?
It seems that the movie name is actually "Super Mario Brothers: Peach Hime Kyushutsu Daisakusen"

Yep.
When I lived in Kanazawa, I found it in a video rental store - for rent, not for sale, sadly. But I did make a copy of it. That copy is sitting in Connecticut right now, and I'm in Kyoto, so I can't get at it.
Glad to know there's a (subbed?) version of the film making the rounds - it's VERY rare even in Japan (there was no consumer VHS release, I believe, just laserdisc). It's not exactly a classic, but for the time it probably made a lot of little kids happy.
And that's the title, yes. When we brought the movie back, my friend's girlfriend (now wife) looked through the bag and said, "Why did you rent... The Great Plan To Save The Peach Princess???" We had to hastily explain what it was...

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about the movie is the final fight with Bowser. Mario grabs him by the tail and spins him around and around, then flings him into oblivion - predating Super Mario 64 by a full ten years.

Sounds vaguely similar to Boba Fett, who appeared in the animated bit of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special before crossing over to The Empire Strikes Back.
Ah, to return to the days when Star Wars didn't totally suck.

Hell, if anyone can even hook me up with an unsubbed version online, I could probably get it subtitled.

I have noticed one thing really strange.
I have an old school folder from the late 80's...

Which has a lot of the same exact drawing style of this image:
http://www.pelleas.net/hm/poster-mariobrothers.jpg
It's very strange. Coincidence. Weird. Funny.
Anyway, someone MUST GET THIS ON THE INTERNET!
And make sure it's a STANDARD format. No obscure AVI shit, please. And NO Real if possible. Unless it's good quality and ony if it's to make it smaller.

I asked kobunheatforum about it, but he doesn't have the resources to copy the tape for me..so unless someone in that vicinity wants to help copy the tape, we're back to square one.
Looking online, all I've really found out is that it was a promo film for Super Mario Bros. 2j. And that Luigi has the goofiest color scheme on earth :P
The real question is, if and when this project is finished, where could copies of the film be set up on the net? It's a 60 minute movie, so thats not gonna be a tiny file. About all I could think of is having it on kazaa and on IRC.

I'd be willing to host a bittorrent file and seed for a week or so while people grab and redistribute it. That would probably be easiest for DP folks in general.

Well, that takes care of everything except actually getting the movie :frustrated:
I've been hunting kazaa, but no luck...I'm thinking of looking around on direct connect (someone suggested to be of checking the rainbow heaven somethingawful anime hub for info), but I've got no effing idea how to run that thing. Maybe I'll fiddle with WinMX.
Last option, of course, would be finding someone in japan and sending them on a wild goose chase to every single japanese rental shop they can find to see if any of them have the video.

Well, I'm using a Mac on Cable in OS X and haven't had one problem with it. I've gotten every file I've attempted to download.
Though, my browser doesn't do it automatically, I just download the .torrent file to the desktop and open it and it downloads really fast. I had to open the correct ports first. But I've had no problems thankfully. So gimmie a link and I'll go at it!

Well.. not sure how you do it in Windows, but on my Mac, I go to Sharing and Firewall prefs and open ports 6881 through 6889 and it downloads faster.
As for installing, OS X needs no installation. I just dragged the app to the Apps folder and it associates *.torrent files with it automatically. I double click the downloaded file and it starts the download.
I've never done it in Windows so honestly, I can't help much more than that.

Sorry, but divx is hardly obscure. Get with the times, all you have to do is go to www.divx.com and download the codec or the player, or both. DIVX (known as mpeg4, but saves with an avi file extension) is currently about the best format for transmitting video via the internet. It's done for video what mp3 has done for audio, essentially. Greatly compressed data with minimal drops in quality.
Consider this: I downloaded the japanese film Battle Royale a while ago (watched it once, never again) because I couldn't find anywhere to buy it. Even on my fast cable connection, it took some time to download, as I was using peer-to-peer and the file was over 700MB. Eventually, I decided that I wanted to watch it on my TV instead of my PC, so I converted it to mpeg. This increased the file size from 700MB. to 1.2GB. That's for two hours of film. See the problems with mpeg and the advantages of dixv where the internet is concerned?
Oh, and as far as REAL format goes, that should be "no real period". Real's good for streaming video, and ONLY streaming video. Other than that, you're better off with almost any other format.
Hope that didn't sound TOO didactic, I just wanted to correct some misconceptions.

By "AVI" I meant the NON-Divx shit that every n00b video ripper likes to use that is never the same and doesn't always work on every computer.
MPEG-4 is good. I like that. If someone got it to me in that format, I would kiss them... after making sure it worked, of course.

One would have to fnid a copy of the movie to do that in the first place. And that's been very difficult. I'd rather not have to wait until my buddies move over to Japan to have them track a copy down, because we'd be waitin here for months. But honestly other options look grim.
