first words when i read this were... o...m...g. stoked that this franchise is returning. glad that a decent company is doing it as well (2k games)

“XCOM combines the strategic core of the groundbreaking franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.”

don't know how i feel about a first person for this game, but i guess its better than nothing. if they can keep the original strategic elements and throw in some good FPS action then maybe this will turn out good. what do you guys think?

Oh man! I absolutely love X-Com UFO Defense! It's my absolute favorite strategy game of all time. I still play the PS1 version at least once a month.

As for this new one, I'm not too sure about the new FPS angle...*looks over at Shadowrun*

I'll just have to wait and see before passing judgment, though!

They tried this before... It was called X-Com Alliance. Oh and it was cancelled.

Color me skeptical. Nothing will EVER beat the first one. Want an X-Com Fix? Go download it on Steam. Or pick up "Rebelstar Tactical Command" for GBA.

I really hope this will be something like a 1to1 remake of the original X-Com game with good graphics... PLEASE !!!

Why does it being a FPS automatically negate any base management?

FPS parts:
AI takes over the squad and the 3-8 of you agents spread out from an alien craft to explore and secure the area. You can send them orders (like Mass Effect, Medal of Honor, GRAW, etc.). It's also entirely possible that there will be an alternate turn-based mode where you hover overhead and it's all turn based like the original games. I imagine there will be some pre-designed levels for important stages or plot points with the bulk of them being randomly generated.

Strategy parts:
Between missions, manage research projects, build weapons/ships, be diplomatic. Streamline the whole process so that even diehard FPS fans can enjoy the more cerebral and less action-y parts of X-Com. Mass Effect 2 had a dumbed-down research tree and crew interactions you could entirely ignore if you wanted to.

I'm a huge old school fan (even loved Apocalypse) and looking forward to any attention this series is so overdue. Even if they go with a straight up scifi alien-stomping game with Acts and Scenes (Halo, Gears of War) it's still a step in the right direction. Getting a new X-Com game out.

I don't care what it is as long as alien autopsies are there. The best part of the game was capturing those little fuckers, opening them up and see how they work.

Turning Xcom into an FPS is probably the worst thing they can do. It sounds like they are taking a shortcut in providing a true and proper strategy game sequel. FPS's are a dime a dozen these days, so unless it does something spectacular, its likely going to be a budget title.

Give the game to Sid Meier, or someone who can properly make an award winning strategy game of it.

Not liking the sound of this at all.

Awesome, X-com is one of my all time favorite games. Downside to this one is 360 only. Boo.

I can't see this recapturing the magic of the franchise. X-Com UFO Defense is probably my favorite game of all time hands down. As an FPS, I can't see the tactics being immersive enough to really match the style of the original in any way. I suspect it'll be a generic team based FPS with X-Com skins and names for things. It's too far of a jump from a hard core turn based strategy game to a "distilled" FPS.

There is no point in getting excited until the thing actually gets released.

There are not so many fond memories of X-COM Enforcer or Interceptor.

Perhaps the same could be said of all video games?

Your words are as empty as your soul.

Man, I'm really not liking the FPS-angle on this one. I wish there was a proper follow up to the original X-Com titles. But even UFO: Aftermath was a piece of crap, despite staying relatively close to the original.

Except for the fact that it was never released or even finished....so how would ya know?

This will end up being like Raven Squad. A hybrid FPS/RTS game. It does both poorly.

Sorry...my bad. I was talking about X-Com: Alliance. The UFO games are a meh spiritual successor from SOME of the original team the way I understand it.
