Just curious as to who is going to be snagging this game next week. Might be interesting to set up hunting groups or something...Just so we all don't get paired with randoms...Although, meat shields are always useful to have.

what does this game play like? Is it at all like Shadow of Colossus or is it a lot more RPGish or neither?

I believe the Monster Hunter series is in a class all by itself. I'm not sure how to classify it. If you've never tried it I would NOT recommend just jumping in. I would guess a high percentage of people that have tried it are put off by the steep learning curve. It ain't for everybody but if you like it then it's one of the best gaming experiences to be had. Go read some reviews at Gamefaqs or wherever else you might find some fan based reviews. And before you flame GF's, I will say that some highly skilled and courteous players hang out in the MH forums there.

There's also the demo disc Gamestop is giving out, if you want to try it out before buying.

It definately has a learning curve... I played the demo for about half an hour and still wasn't sure what I was doing. I would expect that the retail version would have some sort of tutorial to ease you into the game though...

It's mostly similar to Phantasy Star Online. Somewhat different but it's the only game you can really compare it to.

I'll picking it up on Tuesday also. The game seems interesting, can't wait. Anyone planning to use Wii Speak for this?

I tried out the Wii Speak on its testing mode, whatever it's called. It has trouble picking up my voice but can hear the birds in the other room just fine. I did notice there was an option for headset. I'm wondering if a USB headset would work now.

Can't wait for Tuesday. Anyone know if the Classic Controller Pro that's being released with the game has analog buttons that can be pushed in (like the PS2/Xbox ones could)? I know the ones for the Classic Controller can't.

I'm getting the exclusive European pack with the Wii speak, controller and figurine included, soon as it comes out end of this week :)

The learning curve of this series is extreme and the patience you need to achieve certain things in the games can be extreme as well. The appeal of the series is that you will need lots of skill, maxed out armor doesnt give you a lot of extra HP/defense. Every different monster has certain patterns/moves that you'll need to learn to predict so you can beat them, you can never just run in and start slashing around, that just gets you killed.

Its hard to explain what exactly this game is like, you just have to play it for yourself or at least check some youtube footage. To me Monster Hunter is just a very challenging and addicting game.

A lot of people will need retraining since the controls are going to be different. Last few releases were on PSP, I'm still trying to get the hang of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. lol.

I actually heard they're not that different at all but that the gameplay is more fluent/less glitchy and that the Wii version has been made a bit easier and thus more accessible than the PSP versions.

How about as a single player off line experience? I've never played a Monster hunter game before and am offline won't be worth it.

Offline is definitely worth it. I've played most of the PSP series on my own and its great fun, but it just gets extremely hard when you reach the higher ranked guild quests.

I'm actually more afraid the game will become too easy when u go online. The quests dont change (monster's HP and everything is the same as when singled). All of the quests are doable on your own but if youre with a group you'll probably end up standing in a circle around a monster, hammering him while he's constantly being stunned because of the amount of hits... That ruins the game.

This game plays just fine in single player.

Really looking forward to giving this a go. I just hope it keeps pace with MHF:Unite which I consider one of the best games I've ever played.

The classic controller gets a little used to, but so far I am about 4 hours into it. I am preferring the Wii version of the game.

I just got done putting about a 5 hour session with a friend online last night in the game. The initial setup to meet someone is a little hokey, but the game ran well. Wii Speak makes my friend sound like he is 15 years old(hes 35), but I could hear him well enough. For a Free action MMO, not too bad.

Is the pro classic controller worth it or is the game perfectly playable with the Standard Wii-mote/nun-chuck setup?

You'll just have to try it and see what you think about the Wiimote. I hated it and ran straight back to the store and picked up a classic controller.

The controlls for useing the wiimote&nunchuck are simple...but you do gota wave that arm to attack :p That's why i went with useing the classic controller pro instead.

I've played for a couple of hours and finally went to the city to hunt online. I had no clue what was going on but it was a blast with other people. People are pretty nice about helping out newbies so even though i jumped right in it wasn't too bad. I never play RPG's so all this combining elements and stuff is taking some getting used to. I like how there is a lot of stuff to do on the quests other than just hunt so I can see how people can get addicted.

Yea the game's awesome, although it doesnt seem to go as far as the psp version. The weapon paths are a lot shorter than in MHFU... One major improvement over the PSP versions is that the monsters are A LOT less glitchy (remember Plesioth?)

Anyway im up to 20 hours of offline play now and nearly finished everything there. I did get annoyed by the amount of underwater levels a bit and really prefer fighting on land. Gotta do something about my wireless connection or buy a usb connector for my wii now before i get online as the signal isnt strong enough in my room apparently... :bawling:

So Baraka,

What weapons did you use hours 3-8 and what upgrades would you recommend doing first for armor/weapons? Also, how much farming do you do because it almost seems like a waste unless there are unique items you can grow but can't find in the wild.

Bought it yesterday, put about 4/5 hours into it so far. Really enjoying it, never played MH before, to me it's like PSO meets Oblivion (kinda).

Whilst playing it, a friend commented that the graphics look crap and were about the same level as Final Fantasy X/XII. This clearly isn't the case (at least to me) but I don't know enough graphic lingo to reply with a suitable, and provable comeback. Anyone got one?

Hmm there's plenty of options and you can actually pick whatever u want but here's what I did:

First i bought the cheapest armor set and did all the necessary 1 and 2 star village quests. Then I bought the second cheapest armor (with 6 defense, auto-tracker and map!) and did all the necessary 3 star village quests. When the urgent showed up (the lantern fish) I decided to farm the Royal Ludroth and made his full armor set and also upgraded it with amor spheres directly. From there I just cleared everything with that set until Rathalos, who I then farmed for his armorset.

As for the weapons, I used a greatsword every quest because I hadnt used it on the PSP versions where I was strictly a hammer and longsword user. For beginners I still think the Hammer is a great choice though and I recommend making some. The greatsword is awesome but it took me a little while getting used to how slow it is...

EDIT: when i talk about farming i dont mean the actual use of the farm btw, but in terms of killing a certain monster several times for certain items... gamefaqs talk lol. I havent really used the farm much at all either, just to multiply honeys all the time for mega potions.

Yeah the greatswords are tough to wield at first. I'll give the hammer a try and see if that works out any better. I'm going to buy a copy for my brother's birthday tonight so we can play online. He's a huge Oblivion fan so hopefully this is something he can get into.

I'd really like to spread the MH craze to the western part of the world so we can start seeing more of these games, like the online one Japan only has currently, but atm I do not have any money :(

BTW if anyone is up for some co-op online action with a (skilled) European player, let me know so we can exchange info.

Although I assume most of you are from the US so we wouldn't be able to connect then.

EDIT: I've got WiiSpeak btw, but not really happy with the quality this thing offers...

I'm actually quite tempted to pick a Wii up mostly for this game alone. I started playing MH Freedom Unite for the PSP not all that long ago; got to Yian Kut Ku (so basically barely into it) and took a break. Stuck with the solo play exclusively (no one else I know has even heard of these games).

Jumped back in a few days ago with a new character, and I've already sunk over ten hours into the sucker. Something about this is more addictive than even Diablo...and that's been my crack off and on for years now. Maybe it's the fact that even if you sink hours into a weapon or armor that doesn't pan out how you want; it doesn't feel wasted. Just start over and go hunting for more materials. Something about carving up dead monsters just does special things to me LOL.

So for those who have Tri; how does it stack up to previous games? Still a steep learning curve? Lot's of new monsters to hunt, and areas to explore? I keep hearing 40 hours to complete...I assume that just means the quests?

I can't imagine it has the amount of content that Unite does.

According to the Japanese Amazon reviews when Siliconera showed them, it seems that for people new to Monster Hunter it's a great game because it's Monster Hunter. However for people who have played the games on the PSP, it seems to have removed multiple weapon types and various sets of armor, etc.

Possibly since it's on a new system, Capcom removed a few of the elements that the others had so if there is ever a new Monster Hunter on the Wii, they'll add those elements and people will go. "Oh, they're adding new content ^_^," when they're really not, it's just that they removed a lot of content from other versions and are adding it back to seem they're always adding more to it.

I had a bad feeling that would be the case. I guess there's no rush to pick it (or a Wii) up if that's what happened. I knew they took dual swords, and bows out; added in the switch-axe, and such.

Sounds like a game to help get people into Monster Hunter; more so than a game to build on the current fan base. Guess I'll wait for Freedom 3 to be released, unless I have the spare cash around to pick Tri and a Wii up.

Now it's back to trying to kill Khezu. :beaten:

(Thanks for the input BTW)

I'm still playing MH3 tri and i can't put it down yet.

Every time i think i'm finsh there's another monster to fight or collecting items to level up your, armor or weapons.

I can see why the game can be so damn addictive now.

Currently online level three quest and i'm getting stuck the monster are getting difficult.

Its true that the game is quite a bit smaller because there's not as many monsters and hence not as many armor sets/weapons in this game. However, since the hitboxes of all the monsters are finally fixed this has to be my favorite installment of the series so far. The fixing of the hitboxes also makes this game much easier and so a lot more accessible to the new public which is great! Theres really lots of people playing this online and almost everyone seems to like it.
