Has anyone ever had a close call when it comes to gaming?

Say like reaching for EverQuest (before you knew it was bad), but then getting another game instead?

For me, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is almost getting Star Trek Online for the PC. It was only $10CDN in a bargain bin, but apparently it was a very bad game. That was $10 saved right there.

Nothing of that sort, but in terms of playing a game, yeah.

I had put down FF9 for the longest time, and I finally came back to beat it. I rushed through what little I had left of the game and went straight to the end boss (which confused the shit outta me, explanation prz?). I didn't really know what I was doing, but I picked up most of it again on the way to the boss. I was getting wasted, just decimated... 3 of my guys were dead, the only one left alive was Steiner. I had just enough hp/mp to do his one big attack again and it finished off the boss... seriously gratifying win.

unlimited saga on ps2. the game looked sooo sweet in previews, but every review i read bashed it, the only praise was allrpg.com's review.

So are you saying that you bought it anyway and it was l33t or did you steer away and it actually sucked? :?

Oh yeah, I just remembered. A few years back, I remember that I wanted to get (I think it was called) Wetrix. Before I bought it though, I decided to give it a test run by renting it. Good thing too, because it drove me completely nuts after half an hour. I retuirned it that same day even though I had it for a week. Bleh, I hated that game >:(

Bubsy 3-D for the Playstation. I like everyone else was looking foreward
to the game. I had been a fan of the 16-Bit versions and...
But what changed my mind was this. On the very day I was giong to
buy the game I recieved a copy of Playstation Underground in the mail.
So I decided to have fun with the Underground instead. To my delite
and horror there was a demo of Bubsy 3-D on the disc and I played it.
Man that was too close...

OUCH that is said by many the worst N64 game released on that system but then again they also had clayfighter 63 and 1/3 or something of the sort.

I bougth that From Software game for the Xbox, and it sucked REALLY bad. It was still relatively new, so I sold it for just about $10 less than it costed in an auction.

Same thing w/ Rockman7 recently.

Taking a cue from hezeuschrist.

Not I, but I remember sitting in with my grandmother at the end of Phantasy Star 4 in a fight with the last boss. All of her party members were dead except one and the next turn wasn't looking too good for him either. Figuring she'd have to try again I suggested she at least attack, no spells. Wouldn't you know it, the boss kicked the bucket from a measly 50 points of damage or something.

Not sure if this counts, but...

A couple of years ago my wife got me a pre-owned copy of Namco Museum I for the PS1 from Gamestop. Imagine my confusion when I put the disc in my PS1 and what loaded up was Rugrats: Studio Tour :hmm:

Being relatively new to the PS1 at the time, I first thought it was a demo or something, but it was the full game. I pulled the CD out and it umistakably was labelled as Namco Museum I :?

Not that I am opposed to the Rugrats, mind you, but that was not what I was looking for. So I took it back to Gamestop. The kid behind the counter thought I was trying to scam him until he put the disc in a PS1 and saw Tommy Pickles running around in all his diapered glory. Befuddled, he found (and tested) another copy of Namco Museum and that was that.

Midtown Madness 3 for xbox

I can't believe how lucky I was not to buy this stinker clone of the great Crazy taxi series. At first, I thought the game looked really fun to play and was worth the money to buy but before I did that,I read the review and saw how crappy of a clone the game was.
