here is my top 5
1. Nintendo - Stumbled a little bit with the 64, but they more than make up for it with their work on nes and snes games. So many classics im not even gonna try to list them. The gamecube seems to picking up some steam as well, i just wish for another 2D mario. heh.
2. Sega - I guess their only drawback was a failure to promote their systems, because their games have always been top notch, and will continue to be top notch. Even though they failed, the saturn and dreamcast might be my 2 favorite consoles.
3. Capcom - Been around forever as well, and have been making great games the whole time. Struck it big with street fighter 2 and havent looked back. Plenty of great franchises and games. Although they tend to make a lot of sequels (see SF) usually the games are all top notch and they pretty much debut something fresh and new every year.
4. SNK - What can i say, i love 2D games, especially fighters. From King of Fighters to Samurai Shodown nearly every one of their fighters has been great. And you cant forget Metal Slug. RIP, but long live 2D gaming. Here's hoping playmore continues to release games for the mighty neo geo.
5. Konami - Another company that has been around forever, they consistently put out good games. They've withstood the test of time, and it looks like they'll continue to put out great games for a long time.
so, whats your top 5 list?
Raedon

No to redo your list (sega, Nintendo are always on my top) along with:
RARE - nuff said
EA - before sports they had a storied history of Bards tale among other publishing credits for C64, Amiga, Apple..
HAL - Kirby, Lolo, NES perfection
Taito - Arcanoid, Things with bubbles..
Tengen - Soo much unlicensed goodness

i'll add my five, but only comment on the new additions (or where necessary):
nintendo
sega
konami- i'll add- they've been inconsistent with some of their "modern" stuff, but contra & castlevania have gotten revitalized, and theirsilent hill games keep me more scared than i need to be!
enix- to me, more quality and innovative RPGs than squaresoft, almost all consistently underrated by people who've probably never played them in favor of the yearly squaresoft flood o' good lookin' crap...
namco- sure, they're inconsistent, but hell, if it weren't for that fruit, no one here would know who's who, lol! now i'll have to post 40 more times to catch up to the stuff i lost ( ). that and soul calibur on the dc is still near-flawless almost 3 years after i first played it...

My 5 favorite "in order based on who I truly think are the innovators, not my personal faves":
Sega/Smilebit- They turn out more quality software in a month than most companies dream of in a year!
Nintendo- They aren't what they used to be, but you gotta give it up for big N, they revolutionized half the games we play!
EA- They have a tendency to get things right, and quite honestly they have made some of my all time favorite games "especially when they were developing for Genesis." Their track record cannot be denied!
Sierra- They have made the games that are closest to me, and there are in a leaque all their own. When I hear Sierra, I think nastalgia, and they know how to pump originality, and quality baby "they are my personal fave", but i'm trying to not be bias.
Atari- How can you not mention them? Shakey years? Oh yeah! Denying them though is like denying gaming, and they re starting to prove that they still got it, and are a force to recon with in the next gen. FINALLY!
Good topic butta, how about the 5 worst, eh? Please make that topic too!

4. Williams- another very innovative company that kind of dissapeared (or was bought out)
5. Konami- still kicking

Blizzard - Whaty other game companys can you think of who haven't released a dud yet. Everything they release ends up at #1.
Atari - Hell, they practically invented games. I still playt adventure regularly.
Activision - How does nobody mention Activision? Pitfall, River Raid, Kaboom!, etc..
Infocom - I absolutely loved their games.
Nintendo - Even though haven't played their more recent games you can't ingore the company that created Donkey Kong, Mario Bros and Punch Out.
Namco - Pacman anyone? Soul Calibur, Galaga, Dig Dug?

I can't believe no one has mentioned Treasure yet! They were the masteminds behind Konami's best games: Castlevania, Contra, Axelay, etc. After they became Treasure, the legacy continued with Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, Yu Yu Hakusho, Alien Soldier, Radiant Silvergun, Bangai-0, and Sin and Punishment. Sure, some of their games are a bit "wierd" (See Silohuette Mirage and Stretch Panic) But kudos to Treasure for trying innovative new things in all their games.

SEGA!!!!
Failed consoles have nothing to do with how good a company is. No one has ever turned out as many consistently high-quality titles as SEGA!
Atari comes in second. Even though I don't like all of the games Atari made, no company has ever been as innovative as Atari.
Remembar people, it all about the GAMES!

Nintendo - No explaination needed.
Sega - They screwed the pooch on the hardware but they really do hold their own on the games.
Rare - Made some damn fine games.
Capcom - All the reasons mentioned above.
Enix - They've created some great games and have made some very interesting and innovative RPG's which weren't afraid to break away and try new things.
Honorable mentions to: Sensible Software, Virgin, Interplay and Laguna.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Treasure yet!
Actually if I had a top 10 list, they would be on it (see my honorable mentions.) It was a tough choice leaving them out of the top 5, but I didn't count stuff before they were "offically" Treasure since I've read conflicting reports about what they actually did and didn't work on while they were still part of Konami.

MicroProse - made amazingly realistic sims for a $200 budget computer (C=64). Impressive.
Atari - I wouldn't list them. They didn't really do anything amazing. They just got lucky to be #1 console. Their games were often inferior and disappointing.
Squaresoft - Took RPGs away from a tiny niche market and Made them comprehensible to the masses.

I would have to say SEGA is #1 most games they put out are top notch and run great.
The one game they made that is real real real real bad is Sonic game for Game.com. Game.com is just too slow for the game and makes it no fun.

If I had to name one company as the best...it'd have to be Namco. Sure, for Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Galaga, Pole Position, Xevious and so on, but also for their lesser-known but very fun stuff - Motos, Phozon, Warp Warp, Dragon Saber, even the wacky and weird stuff like Cutie Q and King & Balloon.
They also introduced color monitors (as opposed to B&W monitors with color overlays) to video games.
Atari and Midway also had excellent track records in the arcade; I've got a soft spot for Nichibutsu as well, though they haven't got nearly as good a track record. They turned out some wildly different stuff - i.e. Crazy Climber and Frisky Tom - back in their day, and inventive takes on existing formulas like Moon Cresta and Seicross. It's a pity that most of their time is spent on racy variations of Mah Jongg these days.
For home games, I have to give high marks to the console game-writing powerhouse that was Ed Averett's reign as the guy who wrote the bulk of the Odyssey2 games. Imagic turned out gold for almost every system they touched, especially the Intellivision. And for the early computer systems, let's not discount Broderbund. They did an awful lot of good stuff, both games (Lode Runner, Choplifter!) and otherwise (a little thing they still sell today...what's it called? Something to do with printing?).

Hmmm... It's so hard to make an ordered top 5 list -- it's too hard to choose which is best!
But here's a list of 5 of my favorites, in no particular order:
Nintendo - they made my favorite game: The Legend of Zelda OOT
Sega - so many original titles
Sunsoft - they also made some great original games + Ufouria (another favorite of mine)
Rare, Taito and others as well because of their originality and overall excellence in all aspects of game producing.

5. Atari, helped start is all.

My top five:
-Nintendo: Nothing really needs to be said here.
-Capcom: Steel battalion, Megaman X, and pretty much everything except P.N. 03.
-Konami: As stated before, they are a solid hitter. They also developed my favorite game of all time, so I got to give them props.
-Rare: Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Conkers bad furday, Bond, enough for you?
-Namco: Hey, I'm a fighter fan. What can I say? I think their history says everything. Everything they put out isnt golden, but a lot of it is.

-Rare-for DKC and Goldeneye, etc.

CAPCOM: like ali "the greatest"
SEGA: Panzer Dragoon Saga is proof that they are true gaming gods!
Konami: Castlevania and the SILENT HILL series are brilliant.
Treasure: excellent when they actually do release a game LOL O_O
Nintendo: its sad to see that the "mass public" is almost completely brainwashed by sony and rockstar , pitiful actuallly.

SNK Took 2D to the limits with the NEO GEO.
ATARI Gave us the NeoGeo of 1983, the Atari 5200, and brought home the greatest and closest ports of Arcade games to the common home.
Midway I just loved the NBA Jam series, along with Blitz, and the San Fransisco Rush series. Midway is my pick for best publisher on N64.
Konami Whats not to like? Castlevania, Contra, Gradius, Track & Field, Double Dribble, Jackle, RushnAttack. This company may not be the cream of the crop today, but over the long haul this is a top 5 pick easy.
Nintendo Probably the most consistent of them all. You can always, always count on quality games coming from the Nintendo camp. Even while the mascots are overused, the games are still fun.

ummm.. ultra is Konami, the big K just used that as a side thing becuase way back when the big N controlled just about everything in the late 80's/early90's Nintendo had some "agreement" with game producers/publishers that they could only release so many games within a certain amount of time. some kinda quality contol thing. I know it sounds strange but its like GMC/CHEVROLET kinda. anyway all it was was a publishing thing that only lasted during the NES dominance days so Konami could spit sales to satify Nintendo or something like that.

Interesting idea, but I don't think the Nintendo license's stipulation that licencees must only develop for Nintendo systems had been overturned while the SMS was alive.
Would've been really nice to have some Konami stuff on the system, but unfortunately even in the Mega Drive/Genesis days Konami's stuff wasn't that good (until 1994, that is).
