did they ever come with coiled cords (like a phone cord)?

I have a set that seems to be, even springs back a bit.

Just wondering if they did this for a period of time or if someone had tightly wrapped it around something for a while.

No, they did not. It was a straight cord.

However, on the Master System controls, the wire comes out the side of the pad instead of the top.

they changed it from the side to the top in 87

"The original controllers, like Sega's previous systems, has the cord emerging from the side; in 1987 the design was changed to the now-typical top emerging cord. Some controllers also include a screw-in thumb stick for the D-pad."

Does the plug say Sega? (Or do normal ones? I can't remember). It was a standard cable/plug so it's possible someone replaced it for some reason. I doubt that tightly wrapping the cord around something would turn it into a spiral cord. Sure it would look a bit like one but you could tell. It would be too loose and streched out/not too springy.

Just a theory in case no one can confirm there were spiral cord versions.

Weird. I have controllers with the choking hazard mini-sticks and I'm pretty sure that they have the cord at the top, and I got my first Master System the year it launched, too.

I don't believe my mini-stick controllers have 'screw-in' sticks either. I'm pretty sure that they just push in, that is, they aren't threaded. Was that a regional thing?
