I recently stumbled across this article on Kotaku:

http://kotaku.com/5521623/ps3-update-readies-console-for-3d-gaming

I'm not interested in the article per se, but at the responses, mainly the response from a member called "Sustenance". In his "response", shows a picture that seems to connect SMS paraphernalia on a Laser Disc player. The interesting aspect is that he connected a different pair of 3D glasses to the adapter. Here is the picture:

This make me wonder...is it possible to use different 3D shutter glasses on the SMS? If so, what pairs are compatible? Are they somehow similar to those shown in retail, the Samsung ones?

Any info would be great! :)

Famicom 3-D glasses are also compatible with the SMS.

That would be a LaserActive, with the Sega PAC, with a Power Base Converter in that. The casing on the PBC has been removed to make it fit.

Are those the LaserActive glasses maybe? I've heard those and the SMS ones are interchangable somehow.

I don't think they anticipated adult sized people using them, either. Most of the people I hear of who have a pair have one of the arms broken off.

I wonder if his CED player works, I have two and cannot get either to work properly :(

I use my Famicom 3D glasses with my SMS all the time because I wear glasses and they are more comfortable. I believe you can use any shutter glasses that have an 1/8" plug.

An old topic, but I wanted to give my experiences regarding a generic shutter glasses I purchased on Ebay.

I ordered this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310169710586

Not expecting them to work, I decided to take the risk to see what happens. I asked beforehand what type of connector it had, and was told it was a 3.5" jack (like a regular headphone jack). This is the same connector on the official SMS glasses.

So they arrived today, and decided to put it to the test. When inserted into the SMS glasses adapter, it immediately started flashing each lens individually so that was a good sign. But did it work?

Yes. Like klausien mentioned above, it seems that all sequential shutter glasses should indeed work, but at least the ones I received worked fine.

This is fantastic for those looking for replacement glasses without forking over an insane amoun for one. Sure, the glasses has "MADE IN CHINA" written all over it (quality wise, it's so "generic", but hell it works!

Now if I can only get these to work on those 3D LED tv's.... :D

Wow thanks fr this update. I have the official glasses but one side is cracked, they work but I do not want them further damaged so I am gonna order a pair!

Anyone know what the generic term for the kind of plug the Laseractive ADP-1 is? I saw a website saying you can use a "normal plug for component signals for 3D goggles" or somesuch and it works. if that's the case, you could buy a generic plug + goggles and do your 3D on laseractive and SMS pretty cheap compared to the real items.

megasdkirby, that's some great news I'd say. Of course, you also still need the 3D adapter, which doesn't grow on trees. Do these shutter glasses work on an HDTV? I don't think the SMS ones do. Also, what other devices do those glasses work on?

Only way I would figure is to somehow find a USB adapter that can accept the 3D glasses jack (like a USB version of the SMS 3D adapter) and test it out. I know one has to exist, but the ones at the store I work in are wireless only. I'm pretty sure a USB adapter exists that can be used to connect the 3.5" hack.

It would be interesting to see if it works. Because if it actually did, it's a cost effective way to get cheap 3D glasses instead of forking over retail price for a pair or two.

I know these 3D glasses work on computers with the right hardware. I've seen hardware, but through the parallel or serial port.

But nevertheless, even though these glasses I purchased are cheapass and super generic, they work fine as a great replacement for existing SMS glasses or those not wanting to purchase an original pair online for insane prices.

I would love to find a pair of glasses as that shown on the picture above (first thread in the topic).

I think those glasses in the first picture were the original IMAX glasses. I've used them several times on motion rides in Las Vegas a number of years ago, which used IMAX technology. IMAX has since, thankfully, shrunk the glasses down to a reasonable size.

I have some glasses just like the ones you got and I've been tempted to try to make my own SMS adaptor. The circuts not too complicated. I never looked into finding the propper connector for the card slot though and outside of sacraficing a card game I'm not even sure where to get something that would work.

Edit--
Actually, now that I think of it...it might be easier to mod the system to have a glasses jack. I'll have to look into that.

The 3d adapter card is sold individually on ebay and other sites here and there.

Japanese and Korean master systems have a jack built in right next to the card slot so it should be easy to use those schematics to mod a NTSC system. Or you could just buy an asian sms and enjoy the added bonus of FM sound.

Say, have they ever talked about these glasses making people go blind or get severe headaches? (I won't mention seizures, as it seems even some perfectly ordinary games are more than enough to trigger those.)

Thanks Josh for confirming the compatibility of those 3D-glasses with the sms, it is always good to have a spare one to actually use it. :)

There's no listings or even completed listings on ebay to even see how much they cost. Does anyone know...when they do show up by themselves that is? I already have the schematics and it's only a few bucks worth of parts.

Couple BIY. Frankly, somone has been selling NIB SMS glasses, which come with the adapter, and they seem to go between 55 and 80 dollars.

Yeah, a Canadian seller seems to have cases of these. From what I've seen they are all brand new but the packaging is damaged. The seller does provide individual pictures so you can see the extent of the damage.
