What is, in your opinion, the best 8-bit Sonic game?
Triple Trouble gets my vote for not just the best 8-bit Sonic game, but also potentially better than any of the Genesis titles. I like both Chaos and Triple Trouble, the only issue being how easy they are in the beginning.

You forgot Tails' Adventure and Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Drift 2, and Sonic Spinball, although those are really just spin-offs.
My favorite Sonic 8-bit game though is Sonic Chaos, hands down. Sonic Triple Trouble is plagued with slowdown, Sonic 1 has no level select and also has slowdown at times, and Sonic 2 has the worst boss fight stages out of all Sonic games ever.
Sonic Chaos seems to do everything just about right, although it's not as fast-paced as Sonic 2.

I just recently picked up sonic chaos(SMS) after having it years back for game gear. It's just as great as I had remembered it.
I haven't played enough triple trouble to make a comparison. The resolution on GG makes drove me to collection the sonic games on SMS rather than handheld.

The 8-bit ones are mostly halfassed games with a lot of slowdown, poor hit detection, cheap gimmicks and trial & error level design bogging them down. Sonic Chaos can be beaten in like 10 minutes.
I liked the first one and Triple Trouble quite a bit though.

I plumped for Chaos though it was a close-run thing, the Master System was my very first console of my own and I spent hours upon hours pummelling Sonic 1 & 2, but in hindsight Sonic 1 is just too primitive compared to Chaos, and Sonic 2 is ridiculously hard in places.

The master system versions are better than there gamegear counterparts (or least seem so to me). However Triple Trouble is the best to me, decent gameplay, interesting levels and an appearance from Fang the weasel! Though when I play it is nearly always via the Sonic Gems Collection rather than my gamegear.

I should've mentioned that I'm only talking about the main 2D platformer series.

I had to go with Sonic Chaos, the one I have the most fond memories of. I could never beat the game as Sonic so I always played as Tails. Maybe I should go back and do it for real this time!
Sonic Triple Trouble was a disappointment I remember. The gameplay wasn't as fluid as Chaos if I recall. The graphics were a little more "chunky".

I think the best thing about Sonic Triple Trouble was having to fight a boss to get the Chaos Emeralds. While Fang / Nack was easy to beat most of the time, it was a challenge getting to him in time. I also liked the diversity of the levels. Island, city park, Jungle, Snow, Underwater, and Robotnik's base. The Sunset Park was a unique level and my favorite part there was running on top of the train and fighting it when you got to the front. I also liked the ability to roll into a ball by pressing a button after bouncing off a springboard. It was another thing unique to this game.
To me Sonic Chaos was fun but it's just so super easy and doesn't require much exploration to find chances to get the emerald. All you do is get 100 rings and you're in the special stage. Of all the Game Gear games, Sonic Chaos is the easiest. 2nd place for me.

No offense my friend, but if you're ranking quality just based on slowdown and the variety of cheats, I think you need to re-evaluate your criteria.

I liked the gameplay additions introduced in Sonic Chaos, but apart from it being far too easy to finish, I've got to still give the edge to the original. Sonic the Hedgehog has some pretty wonderful level design. The jungle stages in particular are a personal favorite. Love the music, love the physics, love the variety level to level. It's for that reason that I prefer the 8-bit Sonic even to the Genesis version, which is without the jungle stages.

Well, those aren't the only factors involved, I was merely naming the reasons why I think Sonic Chaos is the best rather than Sonic 1, 2, or Triple Trouble.
I really like Sonic 1 but the slowdown and the fact that there's no level select just makes it my second favorite really. The Game Gear battery life and annoying way of getting continues in Sonic 1 (since you lose all rings at once and you need 50 at the end to get to the special stage) makes the game very hard to finish, not to mention how much harder the game gets during the later stages, the chaos emeralds, etc. etc.
Sonic 2 is too frustrating at times and the level design is poor, especially on the boss acts. It fixed the problems Sonic 1 had but fucked up the level design and difficulty so badly that it turns a lot of people off to the game.
Sonic Triple Trouble has poor boss fights (why must I hit A mid-jump for Sonic to actually be able to hit the first boss? That doesn't make for good gameplay), mediocre level design, and feels very slow-paced compared to the other three games. The game just feels slowed down. Overall, Triple Trouble just doesn't do much for me.
Sonic Chaos on the other hand, aside from it's lack of difficulty, had fun and diverse special stages, good stage design that didn't really require leaps of faith, and fun boss fights. I think it's the quintessential 8-bit Sonic game. It doesn't do one thing particularly great like say, the level design in Sonic 1, or the special stages on Triple Trouble, or the physics of Sonic 2, but everything is consistently good in Sonic Chaos, which makes it much more playable than Triple Trouble or Sonic 2 that have such glaring flaws at times that it makes them hard to play.
