Sega CD

I have recently accquired a Sega CD with no hookups. I'm not even sure if the system works. I've hooked it up to my Model 1 Sega Genesis but when I turn it on it doesn't power on.

I've had a look at the Sega CD. I've plugged in a set of standard AV cables, and I found a changable AC adaptor. I set the AC adaptor to 9V and the polarity as positive, but even when I have it all hooked up nothing happens.

If anybody can help in any way I'd appreciate it. I have no knowledge of the system so it may just be a simple mistake.

Edit: Its a Model 2 Sega CD. I'm not sure if its compatible with a model 1 Genesis anyway.

Howdy!

First off: the Model 2 is very compatible with a Model 1. No worries there.

Do you happen to have another Genesis Model 1 power supply? It'll be more reliable than a changeable. If you use the changeable, be sure to set it to 1.2A. If that adapter can't go that high, that may be the problem (I'm guessing). If it don't work and your adapter can get to 1.2A, stick it on the Genesis to make sure it's not the adapter.

Also, make sure that the Genesis is inserted nice and snug into the slot on the side of the Sega CD. I know with my Model 1 I got recently I freaked when nothing happened and found that the console was off kilter a bit. There's usually a mounting plate that comes with the CD for Model 1's. Make sure that's attached (if you have it). If not, try putting some thin cardboard under the Genesis to make sure it's level so the contacts aren't bending or possibly slipping.

That's all I can think of for the "easy" stuff. There is a fuse that is known to die on Sega CD systems and if you do a search you'll find out more about it.

I just realized I didn't have my Genesis on the AV channel. I set it to that and tried the changable AC adaptor on my Genesis alone, and it barely started the system. I assume if it can barely start a Genesis, then the CD wouldn't get any power if they were both together.

I'm gonna buy a second AC adaptor, a proper one. That may work. If anyone has any other tips on getting this thing to work let me know.

First off,the Sega Genesis and Sega CD use the MK-1602 Power Adapter that is 9 or 10V and 1.2 AMPS. Be sure your using a DC adapter, not an AC like the NES uses. It is best to use the original MK-1602 with the Sega CD, the Genesis on the other hand if you cant find another MK-1602, can accept those RadioShack Adapters with no problems at all,just make sure of correct voltage and amperage. Finally if the Genesis was connected to a Sega CD before then,clean the motherboard connector on the Genesis with rubbing alcohol and cue-tips or a rubber pink eraser and even if it wasn't do it anyway to ensure proper connection. Hope this helps.

I've found another power adaptor that I could buy. I was gonna stick my Genesis Model 1 adaptor on the Sega CD, and use this other power adaptor for my Genesis. The only thing is that the other power adaptor is 850mA.

Does anyone know if it will work?

My apologies for the double post but my problem is solved.

I got a second power adaptor thats 1000mA and it works. I set the system up and it didn't work originally. I then took apart the CD and jumped the fuse. Its working great now!

The only problem now is that my two CD games, Sewyer Shark, and Ecco the Dolphin, kinda suck...balls.

The amperage is right but the voltage is too high for comfort. Also the Model 1 Sega Genesis/Sega CD Model 1 & 2 MK-1602 power adapter has a negative tip where the Genesis 2/32X MK-2103 has a positive tip.

Short answer,sadly it won't work,wrong voltage,wrong DC direction and wrong plug size seeing as both the Sega CD Models 1 and 2 use the same ole MK-1602.
