I recently bought an SNES off of ebay (the original 1991 model, not the mini) and it came with a controller. This controller has the super nintendo logo on the front, dark gray letters for the L and R on the shoulder buttons, and has the model number SNS-005 and 'made in japan' on the back.

I also bought another controller for it, which is identical apart from engraved letters for the L and R on the shoulder buttons (like in the SNS-102 version) and 'made in china' on the back.

What's the story behind this? Is the second one a fake?

Hrm. I thought all SNS-005 controllers had the molded ("engraved", you might say, though nobody actually engraved them) letter labels. I suppose it's possible they could have mixed up the buttons and used Super Famicom/PAL SNES shoulder buttons, which do have the letters silkscreened in grey, but it seems kinda suspicious. Alternatively, one of the owners could have swapped the buttons maybe...

As for the second one, yeah, it sounds fake, but I'm not 100% sure. I thought only SNS-102 controllers were made in China.

Pics?

I have several (like in 20) SNES controllers and both SNS-005s and SNS-102s have either engraved or printed letters. I suppose that Nintendo had two or more providers for the controller's shell.

It's amazing how breakable SNES controllers are. I personally hate anything but the original SNES controllers that came with the system. But they always break. L & R gets stuck. Amazing controllers when they work. But break too easy.

Interesting. I have never seen a U.S. controller with silkscreened letters (or if I have, I just didn't notice).

Wut.

I've never had a problem in the almost 20 years since it was introduced.

The 'made in japan' controller (with the printed L and R) actually came with the original snes system that I bought, so I'd assume that it's original.

The 'made in china' controller (with the engraved L and R) was purchased at a used game store separately, so I don't really know its history. I'll probably open it up and take a look at the circuit board and look for a nintendo logo. I don't really have any reason to believe that this one is counterfeit, though. It plays really well.

I guess I'm wondering - were all 'made in china' snes controllers made with the engraved L and R buttons and all 'made in japan' snes controllers made with the printed L and R buttons?

I assume so, but it should also be model number SNS-102 in that case (though maybe there were SNS-005 controllers that were made in China that I just didn't know about).

Apparently not, though I also just learned this today (or rather, the reverse of this - that not all of them have the molded L and R labels).

So there are official SNS-005 model controllers out there that were made in japan and have engraved L and R buttons?

I guess I'm just sorting out what's authentic and what isn't.

Yep! I have some, a couple of which came with my console I got in 1993-ish, and I've had them ever since.

It's kinda late right now but I'll make sure to put up a couple of pictures over the weekend.

Now I'm wondering - did the 'made in japan' controllers with the engraved L and R buttons ship with the revised version of the snes (the one with the molded 'eject' on the eject button)?

Good question. I wish I had my SNESes with me so I could check that. I also wonder if there are any Super Famicom controllers with the same trigger style. I tend to doubt it because my SFC is a 2/1/3 revision, but I did buy it used, so it could have had a different controller

i still have my launch system from '91. the controllers have silk-screened "Super Nintendo" and silk-screened L and R buttons. i did pick up a couple more controllers when Secret of Mana came out~ those have the "Super Nintendo" silk screen, but have the molded L and R buttons. bought from toysRus. hope this helps.

They're sticking? No offense sir, but it sounds like you're abusing your controllers just a bit.
