I just recently paid for a 7 day trial for $1 and i'm definitely gonna buy the client and subscribe.
This MMO is for people who like hardcore environments first off, so if you are timid no need even trying as this is no WoW clone and does not cater to the casual. Ok maybe that isn't a fair potshot, but in short it's as fun as WoW "seriously", I really enjoyed WoW and no other MMO has really been as "fun", this one believe it or not though is, even in a WoW "killer" way. Problem is with me is what WoW started out as and turned into is why I harbor animosity, given it is still a fun game and this is ever bit as fun as WoW. The tough part is if you die, you drop all your stuff, but the game is made this way with item decay and skill instead of epic weapons/loot, though loot DOES matter and the massive scope lends itself to the formula EXTREMELY well.
Also there are many rules in place to balance PvP much like Ultima Online was, so there is ganking, but not without first taking things into consideration. Sieges and cross class killing are a major draw and this can be penalized if you overdo it, so much don't, but if you're down and out it's there.
Melee is done 3rd person style, but shooting arrows and magic is just like Elder Scrolls, 1st person. The map is freakin GINORMOUS and the environments are non-instanced and hold a real world feel with no loading. Skills level JUST like in Elder Scrolls, you jump you level jumping, you crouch you level crouching, it is all skill based and there is no actual level for your character, just skill levels.
This game is one of "those" games that reaches the l33t class of games as mentioned including others like Diablo 1/2, Quake 3, Eve Online, etc, but imo more fun like WoW. Anyone serious about this type of setup should give it a try as it's very good, if you enjoyed original Everquest back in the day this game is HIGHLY fucking recommended! Really what else more needs to be said than Morrowind/Oblivion online? http://www.darkfallonline.com/index.html

Been playing this game all weekend, non-stop, it's amazing. Seriously.
From what most of the veteran players say, end game is even more great, which I find hard to believe as so far it has been mind blowing. This is the best MMO since WoW, no shit. It is hard though, keep that in mind.

I'd try this game, but that 1 dollar thing is a pain in the ass. I mean is that how they get their money? god damn I know its barely anything but if its so little why couldn't it just be a free 7 day trial or something

Darkfall has been designed from the outset as a full-loot PVP game, meaning on death players are able to fully loot other players of their gear and gold on their person.
Is this true? So basically, I will constantly get ganked and lose all my gear and gold? Not the focus or not, that's still a pretty big negative in my book.

The game is what you make of it, it doesn't hold your hand.
I have died and dropped my gear 4 times so far, but not by the hand of another player, but by npc's. I was able to retrieve my gear all 4 times cause you must understand the world map is gargantuan and the chances are someone won't find it before you unless they saw where you died. You really have to see your speck on the map and then zoom out to understand how large it is. I have a hard time explaining the massive size as really I have never seen such "one" large map that has no loading zones or instances, the closest would be Everquest 1.
The penalties and other mechanics such as decay make it manageable. There is a bank also to store your extra goods from the get go.
It's a game with full loot done right, where it makes it feel like you have the choice to do whatever you want. Want to escape someone killing you? Get on a mount..... just make sure they don't hijack it first.

I looked at the game and it looks fairly good, but so expensive. $50 for the first month and then a month fee. I don't even like monthly fees to begin with. If someone ever creates a private server I'd be interested though.

It's probably one of those things that if you get it for $1 you get it for seven days, but if you don't cancel before the seven day period ends you get hit with that first month. I'm not saying that's what happens but it could happen. A lot of things are like that, why not bring it to video games.

No. It's $1 non-recurring. At least that was the way it was with paypal, cause they accept paypal.
Btw, this ain't no free to play or cash shop game. It's possible the most hardcore addictive MMO since Everquest. I use Everquest cause on the larger scope it is much more what the game is like. I have played 24 hours straight "something I haven't done since WoW was in beta" and still can't grasp all that is going on.
People talking about sieges and portals being attacked, letters coming across the screen saying battles have been won and lost and clans have acquired other clans property. It's very, very active and alive. Seems like it is honestly set to be the next Ultima Online.
This ain't just another MMORPG.

What I'm asking is, can LeftNutz of the Clan PwnzU run around lower level areas and spam gank every low level player in sight and steal everything they own with impunity?
There's holding your hand and then there is letting some retard steal a quarter to a third of your progress in the game (assuming what they say is true and skills supersede gear) because he's a dick.

It's a classic Diku MUD with a new front end.
I always hated the Diku kill MUDs. They're full of budding sociopaths. G'luck with that.

You get 24 hours of new player protection if that matters to you. Also yes after that 24 hours you can get killed by other players, doesn't mean they will risk going outlaw on you, but there are ways around and most are focused on sieges as said before it is geared that way and any time they take to kill you means they can lose alot.
Items are not as sought after as you seem to be making it, you act like you are going to literally die in real life if you lose an item. The only items that suck to lose are boats, mounts, and resources. Items are fairly easy to replace and epic loot doesn't even exist.
So yes, you can get ganked but unlike some other models in the past, you can avoid it, but there is always that chance. i'm 32 hours in and haven't even seen another race other than Orks yet, though yes you can get ganked so the game is probably not for you.

Hey there's no doubt it is a tough environment, some like it some don't. Personal choice.
There is a really good system in place here though and it's more about racial alliance not like Age of Conan which was a complete farce and mess and nothing but a gank fest.
Even if the game lost some of its "full loot" options it would still be a good game, it's pushing the genre forward in terms of gameplay and just so happens to be hardcore at the same time. Other MMO's will copy it I quarantee.

What does being an outlaw mean? Is it a method to curb what I'm talking about?

Don't be so dramatic. If I'm going to lose it all because an idiot noticed he could step on me and get free stuff, I want to know. Ganking is fine. Ganking for dollars, not so much. I'd rather not deal with a moron named TPainZ riding on a boat, that he financed by stalking me every time I leave town after buying new gear.
It's not getting ganked that bothers me, it's losing everything on my character repeatedly that bothers me. Based on what I've read, is gear really that inconsequential? If you lose it all, is going back to your bank to get money to buy new stuff not a hassle?

I needed a bit more playtime before I could honestly reply to your post.
Outlaw is if a player within your race kills his own kind "aka, you", everytime he kills someone in this way he losses alignment. Once he has killed too many he will turn red, won't be able to emter towns and can only shift alignment back by killing other reds.
So most blue and green players will not attack you, only reds, which can't enter towns anyway. In every situation so far I haven't lost any gear I haven't EXPECTED to lose.
Now the flip side of the coin and the area where it does turn into a gankl fest is when you are in a clan and that clan declares war on another clan, then it's full on no holds barred. Running with a clan and getting into clan wars is a helluva experience though, lemme tell ya. I have earned more awesome loot on the field from battles than lost and have banked from high rank guys even at the low rank I am. You can use any weapon you find no level restrictions, which in short is awesome, so it works in the favor of the new player.
So to finish this up, no, you will not get ganked repeatedly unless you play foolishly, but when war is involved it's another ballgame, but imo i've loved being at war so far, i've banked so much shit and it's just damn fun, then I take all that good loot and go pve and level up, if I get low on goods I just go on another war run and honestly peace treaties and rules are usually made between clans cause it gets hairy and really the high level guys lose out the most. Alot of people aren't even gonna want the low level stuff you have "though resources are desirable", but still banking is your friend.
