I've put some technical information and a graphics demo together for a new graphic's mode called "160C" that the Atari 7800 supports.

Its like APAC on the A8s but its not any pixel or any colour LOL. Its pretty close tho :D.

Check out the development thread here :-

Many thanks to AtariAge members sh3-rg and nonner242 for their graphical assistance and Crazyace for planting the seed LOL.

Very impressive!

How well do they work in game applications?

Images look nice, but too bad they have to kill "Commando" carts just to view it on a console.

Thanks for the compliment.

Static screens should be no problem. I've come up with a game idea to use it. I just need to see if its workable.

It doesn't have to be a Commando cart. All it needs is bank switched cart PCB. Something like Jinks would be perfectly fine. It also works fine on a Cuttle Cart 2 (CC2).

Would this method work with a side scroller, like R-Type or Life Force?

At the moment, other than static screens, I can't say what is possible and what isn't :(. As soon as I get something concrete going I'll let everybody know ;).

It's good to see someone doing such things for the 7800. It always was the neglected child of Atari.

"Static screens," you say? It would be interesting to see how games like Mr. Do! and Mr. Do!'s Castle would look. Or Pengo.

Good luck on your future endeavors.

Sounds a bit like the Hi-Color trick used in some GBC games (such as tomb raider) for cut scenes and title screens. The timing issues involved would probally make anything other than that pretty difficult. Looks good though, keep up the good work.

Curt Vendel is working on an expansion module, perhaps this level of video will allow a game to look this way on it.

Its a fun machine to code for.

They aren't static. I mean nothing moving at all.

Good luck on your future endeavors.

Its going to be an interesting year for the 7800 ;).

There aren't any timing issues at all in this mode. It is well within the limits of the original architecture and does not use any CPU processing time after being set-up unless you are using "interlaced" mode.

You'll have to wait and see ;).
