Howdy-

I'm going to Japan soon & might look out for a Turbo Duo R or RX. As I understand, these can play US & Japanese Hu Cards, as well as US & Japanese CDs & Super CDs. I'm not sure what the difference between an R & RX is.

In any case, what would I expect to pay in a game store in Japan for one of these?

Thank you,
-Jason

They actually play Japanese Hu-cards, and all regions when it comes to CDs. You'll need an adapter if you're looking to play US cards on the system.

As for price, I have no idea what they would sell for in Japan unfortunately. They tend to sell for about $200 or so stateside, so I would guess less than that.

It's a great machine. Good luck with your search.

Keep in mind that if you're going to be asking anyone about it, you want to ask for a PC Engine Duo R or RX. There's no such thing as a Turbo Duo R or RX; there's just the one and only Turbo Duo model that came out in the US.

Anyway, the difference between the R and the RX is a 6-button controller packaged with the unit mostly. Seriously.

I'd say aim for around $100. Brick and mortar stores may charge a premium compared to Japan Yahoo auctions, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if they charged more than that. But like BeaglePuss said, don't pay over $200.

Thanks for your replies!

Hmmm...let me post 1 follow-up question, please.

I already have a black US Turbo Duo. As I understand, it can play any game except for Japanese Hu Cards (needs a physical adapter to accommodate different connector/pinouts).

So, if I got a white PC Engine Duo R or RX, then I'd still need a similar Hu Card adapter to play US cards.

So, there's no "one machine plays all, right out of the box" Turbo (or PC Engine) console out there, correct?

Thanks,
-Jason

You will also need an arcade card duo to play the arcade cd games.

Yeah, no Duo has the Arcade Card built-in (and it only came out in Japan so you'd need a PC Engine Duo or an adapter), and then there are the SuperGrafx games. So there's quite a bit of stuff that you can't play with any model straight out of the box.

You said you already have a US Turbo Duo. Since that can handle your US and Japanese CD needs why not just pick up a PC Engine, Core Grafx or Core Grafx II to handle your Japanese Hu card needs? Any of those 3 can play Japanese Hu cards since the US Duo can't and they can be had for pretty darn cheap. Any of the three will be cheaper to pick up than a Hu card converter or a Japanese DUO system.

Unless your reasoning to pick up a Duo-R or Duo-RX is for the reliability over the US Turbo Duo.

You can also get your Turbo Duo modded to play US and Jap Hu Cards if you really just want an "all in one" system.

I get rather confused by the 'grafx' line since I've never really gotten into it, but couldn't the op also just get a SuperGrafx? That plays Japanese Hus, right? Plus it opens up the whopping 7-game SuperGrafx library!

Is the SuperGrafx a PC Engine in and of itself? I thought it was just an add-on, but I've never given enough of a damn about it to research. :P

The SuperGrafx is a Hu card system in itself which can play both Japanese SuperGrafx Hu cards as well as any regular Japanese Hu cards. It is not an add on. You can however attach the Super CD-Rom 2 to it to play both Japanese and American CDs.

$30-$100 seems to be what they go for.

Thanks for all of the replies--maybe I'll see if I can pick up a cheap SuperGrafx or Core Grafx II on my trip.

BTW, this is all making my head spin--I was looking for an all-in-one reference of the US & Japanese models & came up empty. Is there a good summary/chart/reference out there?

Thank you,
-Jason

Except for 1 random store w/ an unboxed $100 Core Grafx II, I came across PC Engine consoles only at Super Potato:

White plain PC Engine, no box, no AC, no AV: $25-$35ish
Core Grafx I (I think), unboxed: $70ish
Black Duo, unboxed: $100ish
White Duo R & RX: range from $110ish unboxed to $220ish boxed
PC FX: $80ish?
Super Grafx: I forget...

It's all a blur...

Thanks,
-Jason

Regrettably I didn't catch this thread in time, but someone I know recently went to Japan in hopes of getting a cheap Duo R/RX and he experienced the same prices you did.

It's almost just easier to buy one on eBay. There's one guy on there that even replaces the lasers before he ships them over.

I just bought a boxed Duo-R with modded RGB output and a new laser lens from that guy off of ebay for $159. Of course shipping from Japan was brutal, but I wasn't going to miss out on that opportunity!
