I, like a lot of you guys, have read a lot of gaming mags in my life. I was reading the thread on GI's interview with Yuji/Yugi Naka, and I started thinking: what is everybody's favorite current/next gen mag?

I personally have a little softspot for Game Informer, not just because of their Classic GI section or because I've met Matt the Original Gamer in the elevator at last years' CGE, but because they don't seem biased in their reviews, and they write their reviews better.

How about you guys?

GamesTM from the UK is by far my favorite, but it's a month old by the time I can find it on my newstand.

I'm partial to GameInformer when it comes to American mags.

I'm gonna second Game Informer... i love the classic gaming and retro reviews they do each month. and their coverage of modern games is top-notch.

I think they all suck these days (even Tips & Tricks...sorry DP). Oh how I long for the days of Next Generation, Ultra Game Players, etc. :(

Yeah, I agree. My all time favorite mag was Die Hard Game Fan. (The Early Years). Then second would be Next Generation.

Next Generation was one magazine that you didn't feel embarresed for having as a grown man.

As far as today's mags go, I would have to say that I like Play the best.

EGM was my alltime favorite until they did the crappy new layout design
PSM is awsome in their mag design though, very appealing to look at (not gamepro, god no!)

though both have their faults i do buy Maniac and Gamepro (NOT the us one, in no way connected), two german Mags.

Maniac has better reviewers and has an import-section, both haven't got a really good layout. Gamepro on the other hand is the only Multi-System Mag with a DVD, and their DVD kicks ass, they have great comments, they show every game tested in the issue on the dvd even those that really suck, everything in really good quality, they even show all GBA games, i love that :)

Toss up between Play/GI, but damn if every once in a while you don't get some good demos with OPM. Note "once in a while".

I have to say EGM, but I've always been a fan of Game Informer. I'm also impressed with the new British Games(tm), and my favorite mag of all time is either the original Electronic Games or the early Next Generations.

Yeah, NextGen and the older EGM were both pretty rad. I've only picked up one GamesTM, and it wasn't too bad. The thing, as mentioned, about NextGen (and GamesTM) is that they were written for adults. There has to be a market for this, doesn't there?

GI isn't bad and neither is Play, but I don't think they're anything special.

Oh how I long for the days of Next Generation, Ultra Game Players, etc.

I loved Ultra Game Players. I wish there were a mag half as good and funny as some of those issues.

Looks like the only way that's gonna happen is if I start myself though... there's an idea.

UGP was awesome. I loved watching the antics of Bill with his drinking, and his tobasco, and his drinking, and then watching him remember that he was supposed to talk about a game. I forget if the discs were PC based or PSX, but it was good stuff back then.

Gamefan was and still is to this day the only magazine I've ever seen coverage on the PSX Ranma game. That gets a big thumbs up in my book anyday. I think I still have their Ghost in the Shell centerfold poster in my room. And my fiancee doesn't mind! God I love her...

EDIT: Oh hey, why don't I answer the question? I definitly would have to say Game Informer. I was sort of 'meh' on them even working at Gamestop, untill they had a glorious spread on the Turbo Grafix in the retro section. Stuff like that turns my head as a gamer.

I used to really like EGM, but lately I'm not so sure. Their attitudes need to change methinks - stop trying to be 'witty' EGM!

I liked NextGen for awhile, but it seemed to me they were pissed at Nintendo and it started creeping into the magazine. Very annoying when you're an N64 owner and they seem to take potshots at the machine whenever they can. Hated the mag by the end (glad to see 'em die).

I really dug the copy of XBN I just bought. Even though it's console specific they don't sugarcoat anything (the article on why Xbox suffers in Japan and what they should do to fix it was cool). Another article interviewed a game maker but in what I thought was a pretty innovative fashion. They asked questions, but part of the questioning had the guy looking at screen shots, identifying the game, and the questions and answers flowed from what he thought about the game and how it fit into his own work. Clever and innovative.

I like OUSPSM if only because of the demo disc each month. I wouldn't have been a launch day purchaser of Ico if not for that mag.

A lot of people like Play but I've just never gotten into that. While I like Game Informer to a certain extent, I would argue the comment that they're unbiased. I think they definitely are. Although I'm not crazy about all the changes they've made in EGM, it's probably still my favorite.

Biased toward/against which companies? I'm always fascinated by readers' perceptions of system bias.

I don't know if they have a bias against specific systems or companies but I did notice their hatred towards one game series, the Mario Party series, back when they reviewed Mario Party 4...

My favorite current gen mag is Digital Press. Yes, I'm biased. :-D

DP does classic gaming. And current gaming. And even future gaming. (Yup, we actually sent some of the staff into the future!) If it's videogaming, it's in DP.

I always look forward to what the talented DP writers have to say. I know I can trust their opinions to be unbiased, straight forward and most informative. Plus, they're quite a clever and entertaining group. :)

Which is a strange, misguided hatred, since they're so obviously missing the point of that series: party-gaming that novices/kids/chicks can enjoy. I've had tons of fun playing MPs 1-4 with my girlfriend and her niece and nephew.

I enjoy Game Informer, but they are definitely Anti-XBOX. They have somewhat softened their stance recently on Microsofts machine, but for the most part they have been very anti-xbox. When the XBOX first came out, and for the first year it was out, they would get in every little negative comment they possibly could. If I had a dollar for every time they ragged on the controller being so big, or the console being so heavy, I would be a very rich man.

Plus, when they reviewed XBOX games and gave them good scores, it was almost like they really didn't want to give them good scores, but ultimately they had to do it. There have also been lots of times when every other magazine and online site gave a XBOX game a very solid score, and they totally shredded the game.

But having said all of that, I still enjoy their mag. I think it's one of the best multi-platform mags out there.
