The 2 best N64 racers I have played are World driver championship for more simmy Gran turismo type driving, or Ridge racer 64 for arcadey type racing.
Others that might be worth looking at include F1 world GP and beetle adventure racing.

Are there driving stages in Conker's Bad Fur Day?! Dammit I KNEW I should have stuck with it until the end!
Hmm. My favorite driving game on the N64 is Beetle Adventure Racing. Plays quite a bit like the San Francisco Rush series. And while you're at it, pick up San Francisco Rush!

Ridge Racer 64 is an outstanding racer with a great sense of speed. You're pretty much required to go manual in that game to get anywhere. No clutch button though, that I remember.

Ridge Racer 64 or Beetle Adventure sound like what you are looking for.
I reccomend Rush 2 or Rush 2049 or Vigilante 8 2nd Offense

I'll vouch for Beetle Adventure Racing again. Try and pull 360's (and more!) off of the ski-jump in the snow level. I never get tired of that.
My favorite racer on N64 HAS to be F-Zero X. Best racing game on the system, though its not quite what you're looking for.

Extreme G is a good racer as well.

I was always really happy with San Francisco Rush. Unless I'm mistaken it's still the only racer I have for my N64 (not including Wave Race - if you don't mind not having manual transmission and racing on water it's a fantastic little game).

How can you people forget Top Gear Rally????
This, along with World Driver Championship, is the most realistic racer on the N64!
Other recommendations include:
Re-Volt: Persevere with it - it's a damned fine game. Great track editor!
Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA: Seriously, you'll never play the original Rush after this!
San Francisco Rush 2049: Although the DC version is better, it's still amazing that the N64 could pull this off - highly recommended!

Carmegaddon 64 is an incredible racing game with awesome graphics and flawless control.
Superman 64 has a hidden racing game that is the best racer I have ever experienced for any system, bar none. To get to it, all you have to do is fly up until you leave the planet's atmosphere, then go to the moon where you will find the first track. Place number 1 on all three divisions, and then you will be able to fly to other planets and race on many varied and exciting tracks.

Yeah, and The New Tetris has a neat-o racing game that you can unlock after scoring 1,000,000 lines.

Anyways, did anybody else almost think that dave2236's post about Ridge Racer after Kid Ice posted was the result of somebody hitting that Submit button twice? Disconcerting. They've got different names, but the same avatar...and similar post content. o_O

Great minds think alike.
I changed my avatar Ed, if it makes you feel better. :P
