Ok, so if my CMVS project goes well, I'll have about 800$ to spend on my collection. As I have a Famicom, and planning on getting a converter so I can play Fami games on my NES, I would like to buy some cool Japan-only Fami games. I'm already going to get Mother and Devil World, that goes without saying, but I'd like to hear some other suggestions as well. Thanks!

Hebereke, Gimmick!, Bio Senshi Dan, Over Horizon, Ai Senshi Nicol, Getsufuu Maden, Wai Wai World, Robocco Wars, Crisis Force, Cocoron, Tetrastar.

That should get you started.

IIRC Ai Senshi Niiol is a Disk System title, so that got me to thinking of more FDS-specific stuff. Obviously you might wanna go the Japanese SMB2j/Lost Levels or Doki Doki Panic, and if you can find a cheap copy All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.

Checking out stuff like Zelda 2 and Dracula 2 is also fun to note differences on. I got an FDS with a cheap lot of games, but I have not got around to checking out some of the other stuff. The Twinbee game should be fun though... I unfortunately do not have a copy of Nazo no Murasamejo yet.

As for cart games, I believe Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Grafitti and Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun tend to get recommended a lot too. Can't remember much else at the moment though..

Ok, should I also pick up a Rockman & Forte for my SNES? And maybe a Wonderswan too?

Yeah there are some similar threads in the past. I don't see anything wrong with talking about it again though.

Ok, so here's what I decided to get so far. I might just take my favorite fami games and put them inside a gyromite cart with the converter and design a custom label. I think Splatterhouse and Gradius 2 would be a good candidate for a custom cart. I could always sell them to the dumbasses at bigfun and say it was a "proto" lol.

Mother
Splatterhouse
Holy Diver
Gradius 2
Dare I say it.... Samurai Pizza Cats
Contra (for the cutscenes. If it doesn't have the "code" I'm not getting it though)
Parodius da (if I can find it)

There we go. That's probably all I'm getting, though so any other suggestions would be irrelevant. I think I'm also going to get a Wonderswan, so are they any good?

Although, you might want to look for it under it's real name - Kyatto Ninden Teyandee (Cat Ninja Legend Teyandee).

I couldn't find it under Samurai Pizza Cats, so I will use the Japanese name while searching for it from now on. Thanks!

Edit: Nevermind. I couldn't find it anywhere.

Best games? Madara (VRC6 ^^), Just Breed, Don Doko Don 2, Cocoron, FFIIIj, Akumajou Densetsu (another VRC6 game), Langrange Point (VRC 7 :D), Captain Tsubasa games, some games with Kunio-kun, Goonies, Boku Dracula-kun and some others, that I don't remember.

Yeah, but I'd have to do the 47k resistor mod to hear the extra sound channels from the VCR6. Well, it can't be that hard. It has to be easier than relocating controller ports on my CMVS. Talk about torture.

Hmm... In my opinion, better idea is just to buy good and old Famiclone (not those Crapstations on a chip). But the BEST idea is to buy the AV Famicom. Hearing VRC6 fm sounds in true stereo would be... Just awesome.

Surely the famicom only outputs mono?

I have an AV modded famicom, so I'm good to go. Is 120 for an av moddded fami + fds a good deal? Got it off some chinese website. It smells like... chinese person that hasn't taken a shower in a week.

Edit: No, it outputs stereo if its AV modded. The guy kinda did a bad job. Instead of AV ports, it just has this ugly cable coming out the back. Would have done the mod myself, but it was just too damn cheap.

My own Famicom setup is hooked through the RF. No AV Mods for me at the moment.

AV Famicom (model from 1993) have a stereo output.

Sorry, Dred, no it doesn't. No Famicom/NES console was ever stereo, unless the user hacked it himself (http://www.disgruntleddesigner.com/chrisc/nesstereo.html).

AV Famicom (model from 1993) have a stereo output.
It takes the standard Nintendo (SNES-GC) AV cables, so there are definitely stereo plugs physically coming out of it, but the sound is still in mono.

Holy crap! I didn't know that this thread would be so active! I might have to spend my CMVS money all on Famicom games. (Not that that would be a bad thing!)

Sweet Home is kind of a meh rpg

Have fond memories of it when I first played the translation, but it's turned out to be really quite short on a second play.

Final Fantasy 3 sucks balls. Other than that. Pretty good list.

It's also nice that you listed CV3 since the game is fairly different with the Japanese version. The music is better and Grant plays different with the ability to throw knives with his regular attack(meaning he doesn't suck.)

Also, Samurai Pizza Cats is not the Japanese title (close, but there's no "pizza" in the JPN title, apparently they still run a pizzeria in the original though.)

Sorry, cables that were included with the system on eBay misled me...

Along with FFIIj, it is my favourite Final Fantasy 8-bit part of series. And one of the best jRPGs for Famicom, IMO.

I'm still waiting for AGTP's Langrange Point translation...

Ys III is pretty amazing, even if you've tried the 16-bit versions.

Final Fantasy III is totally playable in japanese and the visuals are very similar to FFIV. I also played through the Famicom version of Final Fantasy II, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a hardcore japanese RPG player.

I haven't played through Destiny of an Emperor II (Tenchi wo Kurau II?), but it looks like more of the same, which is a good thing.

Gradius II and Parodius are very impressive and still very playable.

Playing RPGs in a language your can't comprehend is pretty dumb IMF. They are story based games. I don't get the "hardcore" crowd's fascination with playing Japanese RPGs. I find the trail and error BS beyond chore-like.

Best Famicom games to get if you only speak English:

Crisis Force (very overlooked Konami shooter)
Akumajou Densetsu (Castlevania III with much better sound)
Arkanoid II

Since someone already posted by favorite Famicom game (Goonies!), I will recommend looking into the Asian homebrew scene.

Although the properties are stolen (Sonic, Mario, Street Fighter, etc.), there are many originally programmed games available that are really cool. They are either actually good games, or so laughably bad, you have to get them!

Thanks but no thanks. The HK crap is ALWAYS bad. Look at this game for example:

Anyone with a perfectly functional brain will agree with me that this game is the work of a highly intoxicated and retarded 10-year-old.

I vaguely remember this show, I did watch it a couple of times back when it was on TV. I had to chuckle at the dig at TMNT. The Famicom game is tops. Tops!

Ah the good old Samurai Pizza Cats, loved the anime back in the day. As for FF3J, I played it through it via-emulator translated rom years ago(back in 1999 I think) and loved the game. I guess it was more of exciting because it's like "oh wow this game came out only in japan and I am playing it!" factor. I remember a couple of years ago seeing a video on youtube of a lot of Famicom games and there was one that plays like Zelda, not sure which one it is but I remember when they won the battle they would raise their swords in the air as a celebration thing. That's about it...if anyone can tell me the name of it!

I don't know if this is relevant, but one of my sister's friends started examining the things on my desk, picked up TMNT 2 for Famicom, and asked- "what is that?" I responded "A Famicom cartridge. You know, the Famicom had-" And before I could even finish my sentence, she said "you're weird." and then walked away.

When most people see my Laserdisc collection they say "Nice record collection" Most people don't even know what Laserdiscs are, much less what a Famicom is. My "gamer" friends didn't even know what it was until I explained it to them.

Lol! I'm going to get a laserdisc player soon, actually. But they really thought that those were vinyl records?

My Famicom collection should show up next week (it's on its way from Japan, along with all of my other classic games and consoles!) so I can provide some recommendations (and possibly pics, if you want) later next week.

I have several of the games already recommended in this thread along with several other gems I picked up during my 4+ years of living in Japan.

Yeah, they think I have soundtracks for the movies. lol A look of confusion occurs when I take the disc out and show them the "giant cd" lol.

My favorite Famicom game is Crisis Force. It is a vertical scrolling shooter. My second favorite is Gun Nac. It also is a vertical scrolling shooter.
