i remember waking up early saturday mornings and seeing this game in action on gamepro's short lived show and thinking this game was the shit lol

but for some reason i never got around to buying it, until now

my question is, of the 2, destruction derby 1 and its sequel destruction derby 2, which is better? i remember reading somwhere that the decision on which was superior was split on both sides of the fence but never giving reasons why

soooo....which should i get?

Destruction Derby 2 is one of the sorriest excuses for a videogame sequel. It is darned near unplayable. I paid $4 for it, and feel ripped off, lol. Truly bad.

I think the first one wins hands-down. It has its flaws, but the racing and especially the Bowl are a lot of fun and feel pretty authentic. These games came out at a time when 3d tech was evolving quickly, so one of the knocks against the first game was that the cars were essentially glued to the ground due to a relatively simplistic physics engine.

So, as often happens, the developers over-compensated in addressing those complaints in the sequel. DD2 was hyped for the cars getting airborne, and sure enough when I got into the bowl for the first time all the cars charged to the middle, hit, and shot straight up in the air. I really don't like the controls in DD2 and find the cars way too easy to get airborne. I've seen a few real demolition derbies, and cars shooting 10 feet in the air has never been part of the deal.

lol jesussss, damn destruction derby 2 sounds horribleeee, i was considering just getting both but getting destruction derby 1 for the saturn but i guess thats looking out of the question at this point

....so officially? no destruction derby 2? going once...going twice....

(also, is there anything i need to know about the saturn destruction derby in case i still decide to go that route, i know its jap and pal only, but i mean graphically or anything like that, is one version superior to the other?)

I liked Destruction Derby 64 alot. Destruction Derby for PSX was ok, but Destruction Derby 2 just plain sucked.

If you know what you're getting into DD2 can be a guilty little pleasure, my friends and I used to play it just to see how much air we could catch in the bowl.

the answer? TONS!

Destruction Derby in 2P with the link cable is awesome.

DD2 is by far the worst game game I have ever played, I played it and broke it in half after I was done. Destruction derby 1 all the way and if you have the system link it is fun to play with a buddy.

I only played Destruction Derby 2, but I actually enjoyed it and don't remember it being nearly as bad as some are making it out to have been.

But I haven't played it since 1998 or so, and almost no PS1 or N64 3D titles have aged very well, IMO.

DD1 and DD64 are great games. I don't seem to dislike DD2 as much as most people do, but I certainly don't like it as much as those two. It probably helps that I have the PC version, which is undoubtedly better than it's PSX counterpart.

Destruction Derby was great, but avoid Destruction Derby 2 at all costs. Here's what I wrote about it in my "worst PS1 racers" thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123417):

Uh, gameplay? Controls? Where are you? Talk about a disappointing sequel. There are a few new features that might have been fun if the developers had spent a little more time on the game. The Video Game Critic (http://www.videogamecritic.net/psde.htm#Destruction_Derby_2) describes it best: "the circular smash-up-derby arena from the previous game is back, but this time it's virtually unplayable. As soon as your car gets hit, it goes sailing into the air. Then you find yourself getting gangbanged against a side wall as cars relentlessly plow into you. You can never seem to regain control, and it feels frustrating and pointless." As for the racing, you might as well kiss any shot at victory goodbye once you get banged into something.

DD2 doesn't take 4 minutes to load.

The Saturn version of Destruction Derby is a pretty poor port, and is best avoided. Destruction Derby 2 is awful. Not sure about Raw or Arenas.

Even though it's probably hyperbole, just the off chance that the person isn't simply exaggerating but actually did it is enough to put me in stitches.

Also, the idea that something can be the worst game they've ever played "by far" is amazing. I mean, for something to be not a close runner up, but leaps and bounds worse than anything else you've ever played, man, that game must be fucking HORRIBLE.

I don't know how many hours I put into that game and I loved it just for the mayhem. OMG, how fun was the fucking figure 8 track??? Getting a lead never meant much on that track lol. Blammo!

On a side note, if you like Destruction Derby and have never tried Flat Out on the PC or Flatout 2 on the 360, do yourself a favor and give it a try. Awesome stuff.

Nope no bs, I really did break it in half. I was playing it with my cousin got frustrated with it, took it out of the PS through it against the wall. Whats even funnier it was a rental copy. I never did have to pay for it which was good.

I would love to see that game(DD1)have a current generation system upgrade.

I remember renting Destruction Derby 2 and not being able to finish a single race. Nor could I survive to the end of the bowl no matter what I tried. Talk about frustrating.

I enjoyed both Destruction Derby 1 and 2. 1 was alot better for the bowl and 2 was best for the racing.

Destruction Derby is by far better than 2. The Saturn version of 1 is not as good as the PSX version.

Besides the other knocks that have been listed for 2, I could never stand how long it took for the camera to swing around once the car was in reverse.
