The future is always an exciting place, and these days you just don't know WHAT will be next. Already, we have motion-sense technology (Wii) and computers small enough to fit on one's palm (Ipod Touch).
Here's a fun activity for you all- devise a futuristic game console that could "work" and be at least somewhat marketable. Share them with us on this page!
As for me, I've always thought a gaming system based on dreams would be an enchanting and enjoyable experience. Games could be played mentally, while you're asleep. The technology probably wouldn't exist in our lifetime, but with the advancement of electronic technology I believe it is a possible concept. I would suspect Nintendo would make it, since they believe in full-front interactivity these days.

I'm going to go with the PSWiiBox. Sure it seems improbable but last generation I would have never guessed that all three console makers would be in an arms race to deliver the best motion control gaming either.
Luckily we are still several years away from the "next" gen. It will most likely come down to another round of consoles from the big 3 but they are all hoping to innovate in yet another way. I couldn't tell you what that way will be or if it will even be successful. All I really want from the next gen is an affordable console(the opposite from a launch PS3), an awesome and huge game library(like the Nes, PS1 and 360) and a big priority on online multiplayer(the opposite of the Wii, pretty much like the 360). Oh, and reliable hardware(the opposite of early model 360's). Give me all that and I'll be a happy gamer.

The next 'big' thing will near definitely be 3D gaming whether we like it or not. As soon as 3D TV's become cheap and common enough, all console makers will probably support it. We're seeing it the next DS, its big brothers are going to follow.
Don't know if this is a bad or good thing but 3D mixed with motion control (especially if Natal works as well as claimed) could provide some amazing experiences.
Ooh and I suspect/want head tracking will make an appearance in the future as well!

Whatever they turn out to be, they won't be what I want.

They will be simple devices that unlike PC's DO NOT connect to the interent, they wont have DLC, patches etc, you just buy the game, boot it and it loads and you play, simple. Hahaha yeah I know what can I say? I liked when consoles were actually very different from a PC.

I think/hope 3D is just a fad that will wear out it's welcome soon. I don't want to have to wear special and easily lost glasses to watch TV or play videogames.

3d porn. It's like your in the action.
You know Samsung has these tvs that emulate the 3d aspect and make all video look 3d, just not as good as if it was natively in 3d.

Just fix what's messed up with this gen. Consoles being huge, overheating power eaters, having imprecise motion control, dying inexplicably, all sorts of crap. It feels like we've downgraded from last-gen right now.

having imprecise motion control
This issue is being resolved. On a different system, but still.

I'm hoping this will be the future of video games.

Now that's what I call gaming for masochists. I wonder what happens when you die in the game?

The same thing that happens when you die while jacked into The Matrix or in your sleep in Nightmare on Elm Street.

They made something like that already. It's called Sega Dreamcast. ROFL
But seriously, I would like to see a console that functions as a gaming encyclopedia. Every game EVER MADE at your fingertips. Set it up like netflix or XBOX LIVE ARCADE, but have everything downloadable, with statistics, and trivia for each game. Commercials, instruction manuals. How to guides. Everything all in one machine.

Exactly, I agree. I despite 3D, I hate it completely, it's a dumb fad. Now TV makers are using it as an excuse to force people to buy thousands of dollars worth of stuff yet again. I think I'm just fine playing my games without any silly 3D effects.
If game systems go a 3D route, I will NOT buy any of them. That'll be enough to get me out of video gaming entirely. I hope that Microsoft and Sony are smart and just use 3D as an additional feature rather than shove it down our throats as a full-fledged system.

How about a controller that's made out of "smart" nano-material that's able to change its state from solid to malleable, allowing you to mold it into whatever shape or button configuration that you want?
Or for that matter, how about a larger chunk of the same type of material that can mold its internal circuitry and outer appearance to match that of any classic console? Sort of like emulation, but in physical form.
Along with another piece that could mold itself into whatever kind of cartridge/optical disc you need with the appropriate game of your choice on it, of course.
