I had the idea to mashup NES Atlas Maps (http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/index.htm) with some gameplay footage and export in glorious 1080p... mainly because I remember wishing as a kid that I could actually see more on-screen then the tiny view typically shown.

Well after a few hours of work I was able to (somewhat) realize my dream. Behold... Battletoads level 11 "Clinger Winger" in 1080p (EDIT: Conveniently listing all of them here now):

NES Atlas: Battletoads - Clinger Winger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbAHFZkxS4Y)
NES Atlas: Contra - Level 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSPdAw1jRMI)
NES Atlas: SMB Level 1-1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CdYxHAU1N8)
NES Atlas: Zelda - Dungeon #1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX1Pwvhu_1o)
NES Atlas: SMB3 World 1-1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmOA9I8TBbI)
NES Atlas: Mega Man 2 - Flash Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlPqVa4ELJo)
NES Atlas: Mega Man 2 - Quick Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuM5xarL_dM)
NES Atlas: Metroid - Lord Tom's Speed Run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CoQ-wXR_iw)
NES Atlas: Journey to Silius - Stage 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTB4-Dkdz4I)
NES Atlas: Ninja Gaiden - Act 5-3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkjZGmFKeQg)
NES Atlas: Zelda II - Great Palace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHlIAepaYGs)
NES Atlas: Kid Icarus (Stage 3-4) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLY7CT8FdMk)
NES Atlas: Gimmick! (Level 6) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jngnKEHSNYM)
NES Atlas: Wizards & Warriors (Castle Exterior) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neFMwQHPWCc)
NES Atlas: Jackal (Stage 6) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqEKObzPMvU)
NES Atlas: Prince of Persia (Level 9) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqhNhs9jD8A)
NES Atlas: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (Laruba Mansion) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9te1rqrruU)
NES Atlas: Adventures of Lolo (Full Audio) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JIeSWLaTSY)
NES Atlas: Blaster Master (Area 3) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwREHvHfsL4)
NES Atlas: Batman (Stage 3 - Area 2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA2urfJuL7w)
Sega Atlas: Sonic CD (Palmtree Panic: Zone 2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ8XZEDIisU)
Sega Atlas: Ecco the Dolphin (Undercaves) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAaGKTLS_k8)

So what do you think? Would you watch more of these? I know I would so I'm going to be making a few more of these... perhaps maybe Excitebike or RC Pro-Am. I also have the first level of Contra tracked over an atlas map as well...but I still have to upload it though.

Any suggestions on what games to work on next is much appreciated. Also if you know where I can get some decent quality gameplay footage as well... so far I can only think of YouTube and SpeedDemosArchive.com (EDIT: And TASVideos.org, but now I figured out how to export raw footage from emulators!)

That's actually kinda neat - you know what would work really good in this situation? G.I. Joe games with the cobra headquarters...you could make the ultimate speed run map.

That's cool. How did you do that?

I used Adobe After Effects and pretty much manually tracked the video as the player progresses along the video. What game would you like to see next? :)

Good job!

What game would I like to see next? How about Legendary Wings? Or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game?

That was awesome. It would be a shame not to do this for The Legend Of Zelda. The entire overworld might be a bit much but a dungeon at least would be pretty cool.

Interesting idea, thanks for posting this! I'm gonna have to suggest the first level of Super Mario Bros. (and perhaps SMB2 and SMB3 while we're at it).

That is a very cool and unique idea. I'd love to see more!

This is actually the first I've heard of the video game maps project! Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

It is pretty cool, actually. I can certainly appreciate the time you must have put into this. I think it' be interesting to see some horizontal shoot 'em ups done.

Dude! That's pretty awesome! I loke the Battletoad one a bit more because it was just on screen and didn't scroll. The first game that came to my mind that would be pretty cool for this is Spider Man / X-Men: Arcades Revenge for the SNES. The first stage to be exact. There's a lot of backtracking in that. Also any top down Zelda game. It would be cool to see him just roam around a huge map.

Haha...I knew you guys would get a kick out of this! Thanks for the game suggestions. I think I'm going to keep it easy at first until I get the hang of it... so I'll probably do the first level of SMB then a Zelda dungeon (I love this idea). After that I'd probably be comfortable to do a larger or more complicated game.

I suggest Kid Icarus - it would be useful in every level, but especially so in the dungeon stages.

Also put me down for Legendary Wings, even though I'm not sure how well vertically oriented levels would work (due to less vertical space to work with than horizontal).

This is great. That looks like a lot of work, though.

As for what game to do next, I think there's only one right answer: Metroid.

By the way, how do people make those atlas maps? Do they really take a series of screenshots and piece them together manually?

Super Mario would likely get the most attention. I'd like to see a Zelda II palace myself.

Lord007
05-13-2010, 12:22 AM
Metroid and Kid Icarus sound perfect for this! Also Legendary Wings doesn't have any atlas maps made... you can see what they have here (http://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/index.htm).

Okay so here's the first level from SMB: NES Atlas: SMB Level 1-1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CdYxHAU1N8)

Now onto a Zelda dungeon... I wonder which one to pick... :)

Dji

Thanks for doing that SMB video. I'm looking forward to your upcoming ones! :)

Lord007
05-13-2010, 12:17 PM
Okay I think that's as many as I can make at the moment... going to San Diego for a week!

When I get back I'll start with the first dungeon of Zelda (http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/LegendOfZelda-FirstQuest-Level-1(Eagle).png). I want to do all of them so I'll just start with the first one for now. These should be much easier to make as well seeing as how the screen only moves when Link moves between rooms... should be a piece of cake ;)

Zelda II and Legacy of the Wizard are my votes. Faxanadu was already said, but that too. I would love to see more enemies and other animations in the inactive areas whenever possible.

Oh, and Tetris!

Kidding.

Cool. Looking forward to the Zelda, I think it will make more sense since the enemies load when you enter a room. (Instead of just randomly appearing on the edge of the screen like in the SMB video).

Also....DUCK HUNT!!1 ;)

That was incredibly cool. It made me think I was reading one of my Nintendo Power NES guides. My suggestion should be a fairly easy one: R.C. Pro Am.

Lord007
05-27-2010, 12:20 PM
I think I may do Metroid (http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/Metroid-Zebes(Unmarked).png) next... I even found a tool-assisted speed run which beats it in under 10 minutes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH8FX38_PR8). This would take me quite awhile to accomplish though...

And thanks for all of the suggestions! There's quite a few mentioned which I'd like to do.

Presenting Metroid in 1080p: NES Atlas: Metroid - Lord Tom's Speed Run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CoQ-wXR_iw)

Please note the footage was a Tool-Assisted Speed Run which uses save states and door glitches. I apologize if this turns anyone off... it just worked out nicely that I could fit the entire run on a single video. It took many long hours to make and I'm glad it's over... but now my video queue is empty which makes me feel naked. I'll be starting my next one shortly, but still haven't decided which game to do. Kid Icarus, Castlevania, another Zelda dungeon? Who knows! Exciting isn't it?

Awesome work on the Metroid video! =)

And for the next one, I would personally absolutely love to see Faxanadu! (that game doesn't get nearly enough appreciation as it deserves - the music/atmosphere especially is still incredible) :)

Dragon Warrior would work. The battles don't entirely go to a different screen, so it wouldn't be cutting away entirely like another RPG would.

I'd like to see Metroid II and Super Metroid done like this. I could never wrap my head around the map of Metroid II, and this might be a good way to visualize it.

Yeah, Metal Gear would be awesome, crappy NES port or not.

Also, it'd be interesting to do a video on Doom or Doom II where the gameplay is in the lower right corner while the rest of the screen is the map display in real time.
