View Full Version : A tour of my game room

My game room is upstairs in the attic. The upstairs area has two connected rooms with sloped walls which don't offer much usable storage space. The stairwell is also narrow and treacherous, so you're limited in the furnishings you can get up there (I currently just use ottomans). It's sort of a strange layout up there, but I tried to make the best of it.
I don't have swag, or standees, or collectibles laid out all around, so it's probably bland by most collector's standards. I'm more about tidiness and organization, and try to minimize the clutter as much as possible.
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/1332/frontal02.jpg
This is an older image, but it shows the layout of the area. My game room is in the second room. There's a small closet behind the wall that my television is on. The closet door use to be where the TV is, but I sealed it up and relocated it to the side since that was the only usable wall in the room.
Like a lot of you, I've accumulated quite a few games over the years and have lots of game memorabilia, too, so I built a media cabinet and custom shelving to house and organize most of it. The attic has sloped walls which limits the amount of usable space I have, so I made low horizontal shelves all along the parameter of the room.
The television is a 46" Samsung Series 6 LCD (it's not mounted crooked, BTW, the picture is). The speaker layout looks funky, but the output has been adjusted to compensate for their odd placement, which was necessary because of the limited wall space. I also ran all of my speaker wire behind the walls and under the carpet because I hate seeing wires.
I still have a lot more games left to shelve though, so I'll probably extend things into the first room eventually, but for now it's mainly storage space.
http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/4269/ceiling01.jpg
I had an awkward panel in the ceiling that you could access the wiring from but it was ugly, so I replaced it with this custom SMB item box panel that I painted which my girl got a kick out of. I'm thinking about rigging a switch so that it plays the coin chime sound through my speakers when you hit/open it...I haven't decided if it's that serious yet though.
http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/3866/gameroomfront01.jpg
I made this media cabinet to house the consoles I use the most. Every system in it is hooked up and ready to play, either directly, through HDMI, or routed through two A/V selectors which are tucked away behind the unit.
Again, I really hate seeing wires and cords (and yes, I see that Wii power supply peeking out -- it was put away after I took the picture), so custom labels and wire ties keep everything neat and organized, and all of the wires and cords are fed through holes in the back of the unit, and through the wall behind the unit, which lead into the closet. The holes are all finished with black 3" plastic grommets.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/1580/gameroomfront02.jpg
The cabinet is made out of ¾" plywood, and the shelves out of ¾" MDF. I painted it 'khaki' and 'almond', which isn't the most exciting colour combination, but then I'm not the most exciting guy. Besides, it matched the carpet. The shelves are made to slide out about a third the way so it's easier to dust and to remove the larger consoles and components. Pull out shelves also help for systems like the 360 that need to vent.
That black and white plastic strip on top of the cabinet is a wireless Wii sensor bar. The cord on my original one snapped or was chewed through by a mouse or something.
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/9641/selectore.jpg
This is one of the two A/V selectors that I use to switch between consoles. They're tucked out of sight behind the cabinet (but easily accessible), and attached to the back of the unit with Velcro tape.
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/4825/gameroomhandhelds.jpg
I have a few more hand-held systems, but these are the ones I use the most.
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/5938/gameroomfrontcorner01.jpg
Here you can see the start of the shelves I made to store the majority of my games. This corner area is dedicated to PSX games, and unboxed 3DO games (I have all of the boxes, they're just stored away). All of my media is alphabetized; I'd probably never play anything if I had to fish for something.
http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/9876/gameroomright01.jpg
Here you can get a better idea of how the shelves look. There are two additional shelves like this one attached to each other, end to end, to form a solid unit the spans the length of the room. Each unit has removable/adjustable shelves which are held in place by wooden pegs. Each shelf has channels cut into the bottom with a router which the pegs rest in.
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/4448/gameroomright02.jpg
Here we have more PS2 games, a handful of PlayStation3 titles, and the start of my Gamecube collection.
The seams where the shelf units merge are concealed by the face molding pieces I made. Upon close inspection the design and overall construction are somewhat crude, but I know nothing about wood work, and this is quite literally the first practical thing I've ever built, so I'm just glad it turned out as well as it did.
http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/1378/gameroomright03.jpg
Here are the rest of my PS2 games, my Gamecube and XBOX titles, and the start of my XBOX360 and Wii collection.
The 10 or so games in front of the non-rumbling Sux Asses controller are my PS3 games. There really aren't many exclusives on the system that I'm interested in, and most cross platform titles I get for the XBOX360, because I prefer the 360 controller. Honestly, I only got a PS3 because I got a good deal on a new backward compatible 60GB unit thanks to bing cash back. I mainly use it to upscale my PS2 games. There's the whole Blu-Ray thing too, I guess, but I still just purchase DVDs.

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/8262/gameroomright04.jpg
This last unit is home to my XBOX360 and Wii titles and caps off the wall of current games on the right side of the room.
There's an 1½" gap at the end because the phone jack is on that wall. The phone line runs behind the shelves and is tucked away between the carpet and the wall at the other end. The router is in the closet behind the television wall, but my 360 uses a wired connection since the wireless adapter is needlessly expensive (and slower) and you can't see or trip over the cords anyway. Actually, I don't play online, so it doesn't matter much. My connection speed out here is HORRIBLE.
On the right you can see the start of the window wall shelf unit. The Game Gear game boxes on the top shelf are inset enough that you can see the holes I made for the adjustable shelves.
http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/9158/gameroomwindow01.jpg
The unit on the back wall houses mainly portable games and has a funky sorta shape because of the windows. It's sort of shaped like a castle wall -- in fact I was originally going to paint a brick patterned on it, so it looked like the castles in the original Super Mario Bros.
Unlike the shelves on the side wall, this piece isn't modular. It's a one piece unit and was a little more difficult to build. It went through a few revisions before I decided on this castle/fort wall design.
Here there are a few domestic and import SEGA Game Gear games, some old Vectrex games on the bottom. The rest of course are DS games.
The blue box is for the Wii Zapper, and the Pac-Man plush on top was a gift from my nephew who won it in a claw machine when he was just three years old which is pretty amazing, actually. He's wearing one of my PlayStation beanies.
http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/4929/gameroomwindow02.jpg
Here we have more Nintendo DS games and my collection of Game Boy Advance titles. After that, the start of my Play Station Portable games.
The Katana on top is the wireless 'Soul Controller' for the PS2 game Onimusha 3: Demon Siege.
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4545/gameroomwindow03.jpg
Here we have all of my PSP games, and my meager Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color and Super Nintendo collections. I don't own many games for these Nintendo systems compared to others, but I do have a wish list for titles I'd like to add.
On top are my Horstacio piñata and a Mario DS/Wiimote holder, holding my gold Special Edition Zelda DSlite system (part of my Zelda Easter Basket (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1705976&postcount=13)). At the bottom is an NES theme CD wallet, and a plastic Mario Pinball Happy Meal toy that my mother-in-law gave me.
I put wooden spacers behind some of the media to bring the shallower game boxes/cases and loose carts to the front of cabinet. You can see a few peeking out behind the SNES carts.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4447/windowwall.jpg
Full view of the back wall.
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/8161/gameroomleft01.jpg
This is my 8-bit game corner. I don't really care about having complete boxed NES or SNES games, but I do track down the manuals when I can. I keep them next to the carts in the those black dust sleeves.
Beneath are some of the few character plushes I own. 4 Chocobos, and a 1UP mushroom. Next to them are a few extra NES game pak dust sleeves, and the shelf to the right holds most of my SEGA Master System titles.
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/8067/gameroomleft02.jpg
Here are my SEGA Master System games; they're mostly domestic releases, but some of them are import titles. On the next shelf over is the start of my SEGA Megadrive/Genesis game collection.
http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/7034/gameroomleft03.jpg
This shelf has a couple Sega Master System games, a Master Mega converter that allows you to play SMS games on a Genesis system, a Japanese back-up RAM cart for the SEGA CD add on, and most of my Genesis/Megadrive and SEGA 32X games. The first few are Japanese Megadrive titles. I only have a few, and I make little English labels for them (those little white tabs across the top)
I bought my 32X new from Electronics Boutique on clearance for $9.99, and there was a $25 mail-in rebate coupon which I sent in and received a cool blue check from SEGA. Again, SEGA actually PAID ME $15 to own the 32X. I never cashed the check though. It was so bizarre that I was going to frame it along with the receipt, but I lost them both in a house fire. :^|
The bookshelf speakers on the bottom shelf were either promotional items, or marketed by SEGA, as they have the Genesis logo printed on them. I just use them for bookends. On the bottom left corner are a few SEGA CD games and promo discs that didn't come in the traditional long boxes.

This unit caps off the left wall of vintage games, with SEGA CD, SEGA Saturn and SEGA Dreamcast games, and my collection of movies based off of video game licenses.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/9688/turbo01.jpg
This smaller unit was built to house my PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 collection. There are also a few promotional VHS game demos on the bottom. The little figure on the shelf above them is a Lynn Minmay doll.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1663/labelsr.jpg
Here you can see the English labels I make for my PC Engine games. They're on the outside of the jewel case, so they don't mar the insert at all.
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/6603/kosmosd.jpg
My current gameroom's walls don't allow for much wall art, but I have a small collection of promotional posters. This life size T-elos poster is one of my favorites (it's about 6'x 2½'). I had to get a custom piece of Plexiglas for the frame because glass would have been too heavy for the type of frame I wanted.

You know, I think I like game rooms that are clean and tidy more than I like rooms loaded down with collection junk. Great room, but like all game rooms that don't have arcade machines, that one needs an arcade machine. You'll probably have to go with a candy cab.

I love it. I like the fact that it dosn't look like a rats nest. I need to get pics of my game room up, it's an unusual one as well. There's more collectables on display, but I refuse to let it get to cluttered looking.

I don't like the cluttered mess with a bunch of gaming collectibles that most here aim for as a goal for their game room so I really love yours. It's plain, simple, functional, and attractive.
Don't you worry about your Wii overheating? I could swear there's a vent on the right hand side of the console that you have against the shelf. How well does the sensor bar work where you have it? I would think your hand might occasionally be below the level of the cabinet and lose sight of it?

I love it! It's so clean and understated. I am definitely one of the ones that tend to go to the 8 billion collectible route but I definitely appreciate letting the games speak for themselves.
Your Horstachio Pinata doesn't look anything like the one I have. Where did you get it?

That is fantastic. I have a couple questions:
What do you sit on?
What are those chargers that the handhelds have?I have a pair of ottoman that I use for seating. I also have a HUGE bean bag called a 'Chubby Chair' that I got for Christmas last year. It's like a cheaper version of a 'Luv Sac', if you're familiar with those. It's takes up like a fifth of the room when it's in there.
And the PSP and DSlite are on Intec brand charging docks that I got from Kmart for about $5 each. The one for the GBA SP is called a Power Station SP. It also has a compartment in the back to charge a GBA SP battery, though I'm not sure why you'd ever have to do that. It got it off of eBay for 5 bucks + shipping.
Great room, but like all game rooms that don't have arcade machines, that one needs an arcade machine. You'll probably have to go with a candy cab.I'm not really into dedicated arcade cabinets, but I would like to get a bar top style MAME cabinet one day.
Don't you worry about your Wii overheating? I could swear there's a vent on the right hand side of the console that you have against the shelf. How well does the sensor bar work where you have it? I would think your hand might occasionally be below the level of the cabinet and lose sight of it?I barely ever play my Wii, and I doubt that it would overheat even if I did. Even if it did run hot, all of the shelves are made so that they can slide out about a third the way, so it gets plenty of air. And the sensor bar is in the middle when I'm using it. It was just sitting on the side when I took the picture.
EDIT: Actually, I just realized that you were probably talking about where it was in the first picture, when it was laying prone. That picture was really the only time it was against the wall. If you look at the other pics you'll see it's actually vertical with a lot more breathing room.
Your Horstachio Pinata doesn't look anything like the one I have. Where did you get it?Mine was an eBay acquisition, IIRC. I've seen a few different ones.
Thanks for the feedback guys!

Nice! I prefer the "neat and tidy" look over the "fill every nook and cranny with as much video game merchandise as we can" look.

That LCD fits perfectly. Great job!Funny you should mentioned that. This is actually the second one that I purchased for my game room. The first LCD I bought was a 52". I got it home and just before I was going to haul it upstairs I realized that I hadn't measured the wall yet! I just jumped on the television when I did because it was the last day of a huge sale.
Needless to say it was WAY TOO BIG for the wall, so I took it back to Best Buy the next day and got a really nasty attitude from the BITCH in customer service. I spoke to a manager about it, making a point to mentioned that it was the 4th big screen flat panel that I bought there that year. I never saw her working customer service there since, though I did see her on register a few times.
Thanks again guys, and the X'Eye is pretty awesome, Oldskool. :)

Damn so many people hate the clutterd look I hate to postmh room.I hate clutter in my own personal space, but I always enjoy seeing other people's gaming areas (or toy collections, home theaters, craft rooms, etc.), no matter how cluttered or organized they are. As long as you have fun in their and can express yourself to some extent -- that's the important thing. I'm sure most here feel the same way.
The world would be a boring place if everyone had the same taste after all.

You did a great job with your gameroom. My problem is that my game room is just a small spare room (with a full closet!). I don't have the space for shelves so almost everything is in boxes/ bins. I hope to someday get it together so it will be presentable in the room of doom area. Very nice job with yours!

What it lacks in Atari, it makes up for with Vectrex.I have quite a few complete Atari 2600 games as well, and a few older games for other systems, too, but I don't have the room for them just yet. I'm eventually going to have to move things to the front room. I need a place for an older CRT Television anyway, since you can't use a light gun on an LCD.
Looks superb. Very nicely done. And the paint job on that ceiling panel is the figurative cherry on the top.Thanks. It was pretty fun to make. I had to draw a grid pattern and then count out the pixels to get it right. The only problem is that the dimensions are larger than the actual item box sprite, so there's more 'yellow space' than there should be. But it's not that serious. My wife thinks that I should add more, so I'll probably make a few plain brick ones, and maybe one without a '?' on it, like the item boxes that have already been hit.
I thought about doing a few different things with it before deciding on the item box, like a weighted companion cube from Portal, but I decided to keep it old school.
Do you ever try to jump and hit your head on the question mark on the ceiling?I wouldn't chance it. This is an old country home, and I'm a pretty heavy guy. I'd probably knock the plaster off of the kitchen ceiling downstairs, assuming I didn't go right through the floor. Besides, I'm 6'0 tall and the ceiling up there is only 6'5 or so, so all I have to do it stand on my toes and I'm practically touching it.
I think that Mario and Luigi actually hit the bricks with their hand though. Isn't their fist just above their head when they jump (in the original SMB, anyway)?
EDIT: Yeah, it is. http://www.videogamesprites.net/SuperMarioBros/Characters/Mario/Super%20Mario%20-%20Jump.gif

Wow! What a great room! Very tidy and functional - it actually looks like you can go in and GAME in that room! What a concept. I need to post some of my room - which is NOT that neat and tidy. Anyway, I love it but I do have one concern: I don't see a lot of room to add any games that you acquire. Those shelves are pretty tight and the games are wedged in end to end. Where do the new additions go?

Where do you keep your NES?I have one stored away somewhere, but I haven't used it in a while. I usually have a Retro Duo set up where the SNES is since it saves space. Any consoles that aren't permanently in the cabinet I just place on top of it when I want to play them. The television has an open set of A/V jacks on the left side of it, so it's easy to hook an alternate system up.
I love it but I do have one concern: I don't see a lot of room to add any games that you acquire. Those shelves are pretty tight and the games are wedged in end to end. Where do the new additions go?The side of the wall that the television is on will have storage up to the ceiling when I've completed it. It'll probably be a summer project. I also have the first room which I'll most likely extend my game room into eventually.
And the games aren't wedged in quite as tightly as they look. The only games that are a little tricky to pull out are on the ones in the corners. You usually have to take out the game next to them first, and then remove them.
What a fantastic looking room and great use of space. When's the party???Heh, it was last August, actually. For my birthday. But it was downstairs. It got Nintendo stuff though. :)

How does all of your classic systems look on that beautiful tv since retro games are known to not peform well on hdtvs? Thanks. Most of the older systems look fine on my LCD, surprisingly, but I do get checker boarding on my Nintendo64. I'm planning on getting a SD television for the other half of the upstairs and dedicating it to the retro stuff. I have a bunch more older consoles like the Atari and Intellivision gen stuff that I wouldn't bother setting up on a modern television.
I've gotten quite a few more games since I last posted here and space is becoming more scarce, so I'll have to get on those closet shelves pretty soon. My birthday is next month, and I have a feeling my other half might get me that new Super Sonic statue (https://www.first4figures.com/component/option,com_myphp/Itemid,3/product,79/) from First4Figures, so I'll have to find a place for him.

Ha, it's been a while, I almost forgot about this thread. Thanks guys.
I really enjoy seeing other people's game rooms. Neat or chaotic, massive and meager alike. It's sort of a little window into our personalities. Plus I'm just sort of nosey.
My game room changed a little since I made this thread. I think I'll take new pics this weekend. Maybe even get a little feedback on some of the new additions I'm planning this summer.
If I ever visited your house, here is how it'd go down:
1) Enter your gameroom
2) Play games forever
3) Never leave
4) Probably die from dehydration and stink up your house (Sorry, I know that's kind of rude.)Don't worry, I'm a pretty good host so you'd have plenty to drink. The other half and I are teetotalers though, so it'd have to be nonalcoholic I'm afraid. We're vegetarians as well, so no Buffalo wings. Then again, I doubt most gamers allow greasy food around their controllers, so I suppose that's a non issue.
Oh, and don't sweat leaving your reeking corpse in the attic, it always smells good up there. I'm an aroma therapy fiend...or whatever you call the heterosexual equivalent. :|

Thanks for sharing. I shared some of your pictures with my wife, so there is hope for having wires out of the way and still have a game room.
One question though, where do you keep your controllers?

No worries; I don't drink either and I hate buffalo wings. If you read my response in the other thread you'd see that I'm pretty serious about keeping my gear clean, so I'd wash my hands before I die playing your games.
I'll make sure to sign all necessary documentation clearing the storage of my corpse in your attic.
Man, we're going to have so much fun before I die!

I keep the controllers I use the most in a one of those black SEGA Saturn cases, with the formed foam padded inside. You know, the ones that video stores like Blockbuster use to put their rental consoles in. The majority of my controllers are in storage bins in the next room though.
What I'm thinking about doing is adding compartments on the sides of some of my cabinets to hold controllers and cables and such.

I used to have a pair of those "Genesis" speakers. They were some promotion if you bought 2 or 3 games. They were battery powered from what I remember, so I used them in my truck with my Sony Discman because I didn't have a stereo yet.

That is a great idea. I cannot do that myself right now, but I just wrap them up and place them on the console themselves.

You know, I think I like game rooms that are clean and tidy more than I like rooms loaded down with collection junk. Great room, but like all game rooms that don't have arcade machines, that one needs an arcade machine. You'll probably have to go with a candy cab.
I'm not really into dedicated arcade cabinets, but I would like to get a bar top style MAME cabinet one day.
Just FYI, the "candy cab" he's probably talking about is the common term (although technically incorrect) for a japanese arcade machine. Where probably 95% of them, and most of the collections you see on the web in the hands of westerners are universal cabinets ie not for any specific game. Since your game room seems to be designed with a modern, clean look it would pair nicely with the style of a "candy cab".... at least that's the impression I get from XYXZYZ's post.
Nice game room btw.

.I see, thanks. The biggest problem though is that I can't get anything large and heavy up into my game room. The stairwell is a pretty brutal bottle neck that's wicked steep, and with an awkard, hard 45 degree angle at the bottom (and a low overhead). Things that are too tall or too long can't make it up. I had to built my shelves and cabinets out in the garage, then take them all apart and reassemble them again in the room (not fun). I've brought things through the window before with a ladder, but the window (through removable) isn't very wide either.
In any event, I could only go with something really small.

I hear ya on carrying up a regular sized cab up stairs. When people say "it was no big deal", I think bullshit haha. Even if the stairs are just a straight shoot with no twists, turns and other complications. I think your room is fine regardless. In my opinion a good game room doesn't need a cab to be "complete".
However, just as another FYI.... other than bartop cabs. There's also another size up from bartops in the candy cab world. The main types that people gravitate to are the Capcom Minicute cabs and the Neo 19 (neogeo). They're roughly 4 ft tall and designed for small children. The monitor sizes are roughly 19" inches.
Here are some google images:

I've actually got both of them myself along with other standard sized cabs, bartops etc. Pics are in my sig. It's actually kinda funny too because I see modified pictures of my actual cabs on informational japanese centric arcade cabinet sites, some in different languages. Then they slap their own watermark on my pics. lol

Nice room. :) A little too spartan for my tastes, but I do prefer rooms that display some level of minimalism over the complete clusterfucks. The degree to which you cover up wires and such is a tad obsessive, but I commend your creation of custom shelving. You could've said that you bought the units, and I would've believed you.
And even though I realize it's impractical, I actually really love the shape of the room. Makes me nostalgic for my childhood bedroom which also had a weird shape with sloped walls. And the house behind my Dad's, which he also owns, has two tiny rooms upstairs that look so much like those in your photo. I used to spend a lot of time in those as a kid when we were renting to a family with two little girls. Now my brother and his family is living in that house. Anyway, it looks like your game room would be really bright and airy with the windows open.

I plan on making a similar wooden cabinet for my game systems, but to minimize dust, it will have backing with holes cut in it for the wires, and a door in front of each compartment with hinge. I can label the door what system is behind it and close it up when not in use to disallow dust from entering.
Oh and the cabinet won't be the same one that the TV will be on, that way I can hold more systems.

The degree to which you cover up wires and such is a tad obsessive, but I commend your creation of custom shelving. You could've said that you bought the units, and I would've believed you. Thanks, but I didn't think my wire hiding bordered on compulsion. @_@ It's no different from a commercial unit after all. You could only see exposed wires if it was an exposed, 'rack' type shelf. I do run the television wires behind the wall, but I sort of feel like it defeats the point if you have a mounted television and wires are hanging from it.
My original design was going to have glass doors on the front (either swinging or sliding, I never decided), and a recessed glass 'runner' set into the top of the unit. I was going to put arcade sales fliers and/or different (paper based) game memorabilia (manuals, inserts, etc.) under the runner.
I decided to go with the open, doorless design, because I was worried about too much heat in the cabinet, and because the local glass place is a pain to deal with. Plus this project was something of a 'beta'. I wasn't very experienced and I didn't want to push it.
Here's a rough (really rough) of the plans I drew up for the unit (I went with a three three partition design rather than two).

My current gameroom's walls don't allow for much wall art, but I have a small collection of promotional posters. This life size KOS-MOS poster is one of my favorites (it's about 6'x 2½'). I had to get a custom piece of Plexiglas for the frame because glass would have been too heavy for the type of frame I wanted.
That's TEL-OS, not KOS-MOS. [/pedantic]
Really nice setup, though. Very inspiring.

Just wanted to say BRAVO! on the phenomenal set up. My wife and I are both gamers, but getting the area we want set up properly for everything is taking awhile. I've got other contingent projects that need to be finished as well, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel! I'll definitely keep your layout in mind when I start putting shelving together.

Holy mother of... That's one sweet looking game room. I like the simplistic and very IKEA-ish look of your shelves. The way everything seems to fit snugly in them is a joy to look at.
As a space-challenged collector THIS is the kind of room I wish I had in my house. Right now I'm stuck with a room the size of a walk-in closet and there's stuff everywhere, which really isn't very pretty - and it's hell to keep clean.
Also, it's nice to see a collector, who knows how to operate a vacuum cleaner!

Hey I just joined this forum because of the cool and interesting threads about retro gaming and I stumbled upon this one. Could you maybe give us or just me (haha) the dimensions to the shelf that house the game consoles? I love to mimic something similar to that and I own about the same amount of game systems also.
