When it comes to hand held video games, I'm totally amazed by the fact that somebody hasn't made a portable video game machine using a Palm Pilot type color screen turned on it's side.
Think about it, the screen is a gorgeous active matrix screen, with a decent size, and if it was turned on it's side, with a analog control stick to the left and four buttons on the right, with two shoulder buttons on the top, it would be perfect. The system could have near Dreamcast level power, and it would just be an awesome system.
Although the cost of those active matrix screens are prohibitive, they are made in such large quantities, that I would think somebody could release a portable using one of these screens for $299 or less.

Which would still be 3 times as expensive as a handheld with a cheaper monitor.
Besides, I don't see a big problem with the screens currently used in handhelds. They're not perfect, but it's good value for money.

I'd play a system like that, but I'm already planning on buying a regular pocket PC to emulate. Just have to find an emu and a PPC now...

Doesn't the Gameboy SP use a transflective TFT, like a PDA? Never compared it side-by-side with my Axim's (Pocket PC PDA) screen, but it seems to look good on the one SP I tried. (Appearently, the SP isn't 'kid proofed' and is broken most places that have a demo of it near me).

Dreamcast level graphics is a long way off in the portable world, unless Sony's new handheld has alot more power than I think it will.

The Gameboy SP does use a TFT screen, but it is in no way shape or form like a color Palm Pilot screen.
The Palm Screen is much larger and much more vivid.

And much more expensive to boot...

Well the palms out now have like 300MHz in'em, and the DC's processor was clocked at around 200, if memory serves right. But the graphical capability I'm not sure about... but just maybe PS-X, I could see those graphics running on a Palm or a PPC...

Curious, which Palm are you refering to?

When 3D is concerned, the 3D accelerator is (for the most part) more important than the processor. Current PDAs don't even have a 3D accelerator, only a 2D chip. That new Palm OS based handheld doesn't have 3D hardware, only 3D APIs that run on the processor.
Still, you're right, a 300MHz processor (even if it is a Risc processor with limited floating point) can do good 3D, like Quake.

Aparently what I've been wanting has finally been developed by somebody. A portable video game system, with a palm pilot color screen, turned on it's side, widescreen style, with game controls to the left and right of the screen.

The big question that I have for this device, is somebody going to make a SNES and Sega Genesis emulator for this puppy? That's what I really want. I could almost careless about the actual Zodiac games, but I would love to see a SNES or Genesis emulator running perfectly on this puppy.
How long before we see somebody do a SNES emulator for this?
