I just acquired this from an auction on Ebay and I've been able to mess around with it for a few hours now. Like all flight sims, the controls are pretty tough to get a hang of without a manual, but I picked them up soon enough. Pretty fun with just a minor glitch here and there (most notably at the title screen), and as far as I can tell it seems to be complete.

Some screen caps and a shot of the PCB for those interested:

The two things that continue to stand out for me are:

- The digital voices. Every five seconds, Chuck says something bizarre like "Engage!" or "Out of Missiles" and my favorite "You call yourself a pilot?!"
- The "polygon" graphics that I never thought I'd see on the NES. For the hardware, I can't believe they can pull it off. Sure, it's primitive next to something like Starfox, but not bad at all for the NES.

Hope you guys enjoy, I'll be adding more stuff in the future!

Chuck's disembodied head talks (yep, with a digitized voice) to you throughout the game. It makes me laugh every time...

Edit: And he's a total bad ass if you crash...

You're in luck. The game will be released (Cart and box) for less than $60 shipped. You'll get to play the game and save $2,500!

If that doesn't interest you, you could always wait until the initial sale is over and play the rom for free.

Thanks duder! I took a sample vid, but it's like 2 GB for under a minute. If I can find a better file format, I'll toss one up soon enough.

A little historical perspective, but the PC version (likely this one too) of the game was designed by Brent Iverson at Electronic Arts. He went on to develop the Navy/Marine Fighters and WWII Fighters PC sims, which along with Yeager and LHX Attack Chopper were heralded for realism and widely popular. He also did the James Bond games Nightfire and Everything or Nothing, which were both excellent.

According to the seller the game was the work of Ed Lerner of Electronic Arts. The cart and accompanying VHS tape appear to support this. It did sound as though he was the programmer from what I could understand, although I could easily be mistaken.

programmer probably, but Brent designed the framework from which it was ported. not that it matters now.

Does the disembodied Chuck Yeager head pop up every 5 seconds along with the voice clips? Please say it does.

It pops up frequently, and yes, it rules.

"Enblaig!" instead of engage makes me laugh every time.

Can't Believe I missed this the first time. When is the game going on sale? Great find, any videos of the gameplay yet?
