View Full Version : What was the first game to have swearing?

Earliest game I can think of is Bakutoushi Patton-Kun, for Famicom Disk System. The swearing was more like a dialog screen of Engrish, but still (hilarious) swearing.

Anything earlier than that?

The first game I recall having profanity in it is Final Fantasy VII, courtesy of Barrett. The first game I heard with spoken profanity is Kingpin: Life Of Crime on the PC. The first game that implied profanity, of course, is Q*bert. Not sure which game was the first to feature either of the two most popular 4-letter words.

Yeah. I think it was this year also. I don't know if I posted about Bionic Commando or someone else did, but I remember Bionic Commando was in there.

"Download" for the Turbo Grafx 16 has four letter words in it. I was surprised when I saw that, being the time period it was in, was just not what you would think.

Maybe in a text adventure? The obvious candidate I thought of for four-letter words was 1981's Softporn Adventure. I haven't played that all the way through and am not sure, but I think it accepts a certain four-letter action verb.

Both Dragon and Shining Force III make use of 'bastard' several times.

Has any game ever used the word c*nt in dialog or text?

Just wondering, since it always comes top of the list for radio presenters of most offensive word that can be broadcast (in UK at least).

Surely someone has put it out there in this 'shock for publicity' culture we live in?

Has anyone played the Genesis game Ex-Mutants (not to be confused with X-Men)? One of the characters you play as shouts "Die scumbag!" when you kill bosses.

I never realized that was a swear word! That explains a lot.

I seem to remember the Sega CD version of Lunar 2 using the word 'hell' a number of times.

"Hell", "Scumbag"...Seriously? What pampered, white bread suburb are you people from?

Master D says "damn" in Bionic Commando. I know that isn't really profane, but Nintendo of America was really crazy with censorship back then. Hell, they still are!

Light compared to shit and fuck, but they're still swear words.

The topic requested games that have swearing in them, not 'List every games that uses the word fuck.'

Although, I don't think scumbag is a swear....

Hell, yeah that's considered swearing where I am. But scumbag?? Where is that a swear?

The earliest I can think of that had "serious" swearing (F-bombs, etc) was the first GTA. First I remember anyways.

The Getaway games used the word a lot.

The first game where swearing really stood out for me and it is because it was accompanied by auto was Blue Stinger when they screamed "Shit" for the first time. For some reason I couldn't believe that was in a game.

Well, now that I think of it, I know a certain anime that used the word "creep" in place of "scumbag" when it aired on television. I was surprised that it used the word "scumbag" on the DVD version. Had to wonder why they used a different term.

May I mention that there were probably games that could recognize curse words around before actual games that contained curse words?

For instance Roberta Williams' (of King's Quest fame) Mystery House (http://www.mobygames.com/game/hi-res-adventure-1-mystery-house) for the Apple II was released in 1980. It's one of those text adventure games and if you happen to enter in something like "fuck" in the game, this happens:

and then the game closes LOL

I was always amused by this example, since not only was it a swear word in an NES game, it was a swear word thrown at you by Adolf Hitler.

(Which is doubly amusing since the rest of the game was rather censored in changing the plot and graphics to make it not Hitler, but then when you get to the very end, they overlooked mild naughty language and the fact that the portrait is obviously Hitler. And his head explodes messily when he dies.)

Hmm,maybe Pong,I mean with all those beeps, the 2D lines must be cursing up a storm. Or how bought the Magnavox Odyssey, sure the system couldn't make sound, but what about the sound the people made playing with a line and a dot.

The first game I can remember there being swearing in is Mega Man X3. X says "Damn" towards the end of the game right after the fight with Kaiser Sigma.

That was my first game that had swearing in it.

The SNES version of FF6 had one line of censored swearing.
Breath of Fire II had one smart-ass fly boss that said "Damn!" when you beat it. Only cussing I've seen in a Super Nintendo game. (I think Conker was the first game that Nintendo officially allowed swearing?)

It wasn't in game, but the NES Metal Gear had the infamous "FUCKY OURMO MMAAN DYOUR DADDY" password.

Maybe the first Nintendo published game, but not the first on a Nintendo system. WWF games on the N64 certainly used the word ass, and I'd be surprised if those were the first after game ratings started and Nintendo let up on their own standards.

What about “Oh Shit” by Aackosoft, from 1985? It was on the MSX computers in Europe. It was a Pac Man clone but when the character got eaten by a ghost it would say the titular line.

Yeah it looks like people above have found some really old games that included it.

But I'll tell you the examples I have thought of anyway.

(1995) In Gex for 3DO/Playstation/Saturn USA version, one of his lines was "who opened the can of whoop-ass?"

(1997) In Vandal-Hearts for Playstation there are multiple instances. Diego says "Shit!" and Darius says "They look pissed!" which IMO isn't true cussing but some parents might not be ok with hearing their kids repeat it. Ash says "Kane, you bastard!" "Damn" is also used many times when characters are informed there is nothing they can do about a situation at the moment.

(1997) In Courier Crisis for Playstation/Saturn, you can flip off drivers who will get angry and honk. If you flip off a police car, they will arrest you.

(2000) Perfect Dark predates Conker's Bad Fur Day mentioned above by almost a whole year. Sometimes when you shoot and kill a guy they yell "you bitch!" as they die.

So the first game with nudity (early 80's 2600 games?) came way before the first game with cursing? Interesting.
