Fav:

Shooters ("Shmups" sounds like a dirty word. Thunder Force FTW BTW)
RPGs (Dragon Warrior/Quest FTW)
Action/Platformers (like Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, etc)

Least:

First Person Shooters (They get me dizzy and they lack originality. I swear 95% of them take place in WWII)

Sports (If I want to play a sport, I'd just go outside)

FMV games (like the crap you see on Sega CD, 3DO, etc)

Non-Games (aka Monkey Island and Snatcher-type digital novels. I rather read a book thank you.)

Fav:

Platformers (Mario,Sonic,Crash,Gex,Pitfall II,Sparkster)
Action (Metal Slug,Contra,Castlevania,Blaster Master)
Side scrolling Beat-em ups (Double Dragon, River City Ransom, Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Simpsons arcade)
Classic FPS (Unreal Tournament,Duke Nuke Em, Quake III Arena)

Least:

Turn-based RPGs -Role Playing Games (Sorry, but if I'm good enough, I shouldn't have to be hit, and I hate being passive in games)

FMV (Same reason as RPGs, but most of these are even less interactive, but there are a few exceptions)

Strategy/Simulation (Online farmville crap, WOW, Halo Wars...)

Sports (Madden games, well basically any modern sports game doesn't catch my interest at all)

Well, there is always that one exception here and there, but for the most part:

Favorites:
Shooters -- Thunder Force, MUSHA, Einhander, tons more. Can't get enough! The iconic style, weapons/vehicles and boss battles are totally my thing. I just suck at them. Utterly.

Pre-1997 RPGs -- Ys Book I & II, Shining Force II, Final Fantasy III, etc. In all these years, I still firmly believe that the older RPGs are much better than the stuff from today, even after having played them recently.

Platformers -- Super Mario, Tomba, Sonic, Castlevania, Mega Man, Decapattack, etc. Classic pick up and play control with tons of room for creativity. Wish they'd release some new ones today on disc, rather than DLC.

Hybrid/Action/FPS RPGs -- Zelda series, Crusader of Centy, TESIV: Oblivion, Fallout 3. These four games (or in the case of Zelda, series) are probably all in my top 10. I adore them. Leveling or strengthening your character like a traditional RPG, swapping out weapons and abilities, but fighting and exploring together in real time. Wonderful.

Least Favorites:
Sports -- by far. I really can only stomach novelty sports titles, like Mutant League Football, NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, and a handful of SNES baseball games.

Realtime Strategy -- My wife can play Civilation III or Civ Rev for hours. It blows my mind. I tried Starcraft a couple times and couldn't get far without becoming bored. There are a few from this genre that I've enjoyed briefly, but none for very long.

Rear-view Shooters -- Space Harrier, Star Fox, Afterburner, Galaxy Force, Star wars Rogue series, etc... I typically hate these types of games!

MMO -- I play fine on my own, thanks. If they make the next Elder Scrolls game massively multiplayer, I'll be absolutely devastated.

On the fence:
Driving/Racing -- I usually find these too repetitive. Laps are negative fun for me; I already saw that stuff -- don't want to drive by again in two minutes. Makes sense -- I hate driving in real life and can't wait to get out of my car! And I can't stand the fuzzy logic in most racing titles, especially the old ones. However, some titles like Road Rash and Cruisin' USA have managed to captivate a bit of my time now and then.

post-1997 RPGs -- The scope of most newer (J)RPGs is just too big for me. Grinding and over-the-top, time-consuming spell-casting, along with the constant desire to reinvent the wheel -- which results in having to learn numerous ridiculous battle systems -- has soured me to the genre on the whole. There have been a few glimmers of interest for me over the past decade, but not many. There's a lot I haven't tried yet, though, so this one doesn't get a full yay or nay from me.

Puzzle games -- Tetris, Columns, Puyo Pop, Lumines, etc... Unlike so very many people out there, I can't usually play puzzle games for very long before I get bored with them. The usual "Learn how the puzzle works and then just perform the same action over and over, but faster" formula wears me out in no time. I can get caught up in Tetris Attack and Columns from time to time, though, and Bookworm kept me going for quite a while. I just need more variety than what most puzzle games can offer.

FPS -- These can be fun, but I don't care for online multiplayer (local only here), so my enjoyment is usually brief.

Favorite:
• Breakout-style games (Woody Pop, Arkanoid, Super Breakout)
• Basically any paddle game, period
• Boulder Dash-type games
• Fill-in-the-squares (Amidar, Pepper II)
• Extend-and-retract (Go! Go! Mile Smile; Oil's Well)
• 2-D Metroid games
• 1970s to around 1984 Arcade-style games

Least Favorite:
• RPGs
• Fighting/Button-Mashing Beat-em-ups
• Most sports titles (with a few exceptions)

EDIT: I thought my answer seemed vaguely familiar--I answered similarly in a thread from seven years ago (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13707)! (However, it's been so long that I wouldn't expect anyone to dig it up and resurrect it. Carry on.)

Platformers
Beat-Em-Ups
2D Fighting games
Arcade (Not sure how to classify this category, but shorter, simple games, where you just rack up points like Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Mario Bros., Defender II, Ghouls N' Ghosts, Donkey Kong, et al)

Least favorite:

Racing
Sports (Save for NBA Jam and a few baseball games on Genesis)

Action-adventure
2D Platformer
3D Platformer
Beat 'em up
Run and gun
Scrolling shooter (shmup)
Turn-based RPG
Action-RPG
Strategy-RPG
Turn-based strategy
Racing (arcade/classic-style)
Puzzle
Fighters
Vehicular combat
Rail shooters
Extreme sports (despite Tony Hawk being done to death)

Ambivalent:
FPS - There are a lot of them that I like, but I don't like the same ones that "FPS fans" generally like.
Sports - Depends on the sport, but I don't like football or baseball. I do like some basketball games, and the occasional tennis or multi-event game.
Music - I used to LOVE music games, but I hate the current Guitar Hero / Rock Band fad
FMV games - I actually like a few of them, namely Night Trap, Double Switch, Gabriel Knight, and The X-Files.
Minigame collections - They have become the shovelware du jour, but there have been some good ones.
Pinball - I like a lot of pinball games, but they have to be semi-"fancy" for me to enjoy. Pinball for NES doesn't cut it.
Card battle - Zero interest in Yu-Gi-Oh or Eye of Judgment, but I loved Card Fighters' Clash.

Dislike:
Party games (Mario Party burn in hell)
Flight sims (snore)
Train sims
Raising/breeding/pet care (Tamagotchi etc.)
Roguelikes
Racing "sims" (such as Gran Turismo)
MMORPGs (or anything massively multiplayer)

Golf
Pool/billiards
Casino
Trivia / Game show (except You Don't Know Jack)
Brain training
Dungeon-crawling RPGs (Evolution etc.)

You know what games bug me? Those first-person dungeon crawls where every corridor looks exactly the same. I'm glad we've moved on from those.

(I take exception to Monkey Island being called a non-game but I'll leave that alone)

pre "next gen" RPGs: pretty much anything after shadow hearts: from the new world has completely bored me

Arcade games: metal slug, street fighter, etc. they're just good to play when you've only got half an hour or so.

platformers: Keio Flying Squadron 2, Mario, Sonic, Skyblazer, same kind of reason as arcade games, but they usually hold my interest long enough to finish them

Adventure: zelda, Metroid, not even going to explain

earlier FPS games: quake, duke, doom, turok they were actually CREATIVE with these

dislike:
new RPGs: seem to all have very samey stories, plus, i get tired of the ridiculous amounts of hair gel required for the hair, and the amazing amount of zippers involved.

new FPS games: CALL OF DUTY CALL OF DUTY CALL OF DUTY CALL OF DUTY CALL OF DUTY CALL OF DUTY CALL OF DUTY CALL OF DUTY CALL OF DUTY!!!!

simulator games: sports, the sims, ace combat, racing games i just get the feeling that i'd rather go do it myself.
