Star Tropics, for a game that was never released in Japan it sure does kick all sorts of ass. I like the second one more than the first though some people will say otherwise.

...StarTropics is talked about all the time in terms of late, great NES games. Zoda's Revenge was decent, but StarTropics and soaking the map in water will always be a fond memory for me. Too bad I didn't want to get my map wet and had to type in all of the numbers by hand until I found the right one :)

Anyone have a theory on why it wasn't released over there?
Good games, haven't played them as much as I want to.

Star Tropics? Meh. Those games are overrated. How about the Power Blade series? They are really good action/platformers similar to the Mega Man games. Very unknown to the gaming community.

I agree. I bought Star Tropics when it first came out due to the lavish write-up that Nintendo Power gave it. I never trusted them after that.

StarTropics? Nah (and it's only a matter of time until InsaneDavid responds). Here's an NES game series people never talk about: Big Nose the Caveman.
(And if you've played one of the Big Nose games, you'll know why.)

It's fun in an odd way. You really have to get used to the outdated physics before you can truly enjoy the game. For a game of its style though, a lot of stuff is really cryptic. In that swamp puzzle, I would have never, ever guessed that there was a hidden door right freaking next to the exit stairs.

Startropics was fun, but I never got hooked on it. Now if I had to mention a series, Top Secret Episode and The Mafat Conspiracy don't seem to get talked about as much as they used to. I was always hoping Vic Tokai would have done a third one to balance it out as a trilogy for Duke Togo considering Mafat was such a solid improvement over the first, but sadly that never happened.

Not to be a Negative Ned but StarTropics certainly gets its due. It's even on the Virtual Console. For better or worse, there is no title on the NES that has not been discussed in detail. The Game Boy on the other hand, excepting Pokemon, is virtually ignored.

Fixed. You spend too much time on GameFAQs. They are called threads everywhere else.
Saying nobody ever talks about Startropics is like saying nobody ever talks about how much ET sucks, it's always mentioned when referring to classic NES games.

Absolute agreement from me. A worthy read on the story behind the localisation process for Power Blade can be found in "The Man Behind Captain Nintendo" on www.nesplayer.com

weird. I just got done playing through Top Secret Episode the other day. That was such an awesome game, and they really needed to make more than just the two of em on NES.
The one on MSX is.... yeah.
not so great.
Star Tropics is an awesome game. I got it CIB for 39 cents at funco land. I really liked the puzzles, the story progression and the wonky dungeon setup.
This reminds me of another game I rarely hear mentioned: The Magic of Scheherazade.
EDIT: wtf. the next thread I read (Crystalis Thread) is full of Magic of Scheherazade talk.
lol.

When you have a conversation about the NES with someone its rare that you will find someone who will go "Oh wow StarTropics, I remember those games they kicked ass". Its all about the Zelda, Mario, and the Mega Man. I'm talking about not on the internet.

IMHO Golgo 13 is terrible. The first person view parts of the game completely ruined it.

Was Big Nose unlicensed? I remember in a Nintendo Power one of the editors said he was playing Big Nose. I always found that weird.

Was Big Nose unlicensed?
Yep. My best guess is that the editor liked the game enough to feel that it was worth slipping the name in somewhere.

man, that game had some WICKED music.

Yeah, the music is so excellent that I bought a boxed copy when I was stationed in Japan, even though I can't read a damn thing in the game. Such a shame :( .
Is the translation finished yet? I remember there was one going at a snails pace for pretty much the entire last decade...
