nes region free problem

hello guys
i just made my nes region free today but i have a problem playing USA games :S

In this case its ninja gaiden 2 & zelda 2
they start up and i can play but my picture is fuckt !! its like the picture went to a scrabble machine and everything is messy

can someone help me out here :D

Is it only those two games or does the system do that with every game?

Some NTSC games will not play properly or will have graphical glitches on a PAL console, region free or not. Some quick research seems to suggest, however, that Ninja Gaiden 2 runs just fine and Zelda 2 is playable but with minor graphical glitches. Most likely your games just need a good cleaning, even if the connectors look clean.

i already cleaned the connectors with rubbing alcohol
would a gamekey fix the problem ?

As I understand a GameKey just bypasses the lockout chip which is what you did when you disabled it, so I doubt that it would help.

I took the liberty of running a NTSC Zelda 2 ROM in an emulator set on PAL mode.

If your game looks like this then it is working the best its going to. If not then it needs more cleaning. Oddly many NES games I bought used were hard to get working by cleaning with just rubbing alcohol, no matter how clean the contacts looked. To clean my games I use a product called Weiman's Glass Cook Top Cleaner. Just use a small amount on a q-tip and clean any residue off with alcohol, repeating as needed. However, you should be careful as I have found that it can remove the protective coating on the traces. If you can't find that where you live then a similar product or a non abrasive metal polish should work.

Although to be honest, if you want to play NTSC games you are better off importing an American unit or a Famicom with a converter and connecting it to a 60Hz television. Not only will the graphical glitched be gone but they will play at their intended speed.

Unfortunately since there is no 50/60Hz mod for the NES your only solution is to get an NTSC console, although I must say that I'm unclear about the compatibility of an NTSC console on a European television. It is my understanding that the newer TVs are NTSC compatible, but I'm not sure and you should seek confirmation from someone more knowledgeable if necessary. Living in America means that I don't have to deal with this nonsense.:D

As far as NTSC consoles go you have two choices; the Japanese Famicom which has an entirely different appearance or a North American NES which as far as I know has no external difference. Most likely I would expect that you will have to import one, either from someone/someplace in North America/Japan who is willing to ship overseas or someone/someplace closer to home who deals in imports. Someone in the Buying and Selling forum might be able to help you, however you need to be a member for 10 days before you can see it.
