Here is yet another "well known version vs. obscure version" thread. This time I am doing Golden Axe for both Genesis and PC Engine CD-ROM2. Is the PC Engine version worth your time? Let's look.

Genesis

+ Great port of the arcade game
+ There is an extra level at the end
+ Affordable
- I always found some of the sound effects weird like that "frickle, frackle" when you slash an enemy.

PCE

+ The cutscenes look..um...interesting.
- Graphics are horrendous compared to the Genesis version
- The redbook music is awful
- One player only
- Costs a bit more than the superior Genesis game

VERDICT: COMMON SENSE ANYONE?

Genesis

I would take the Genesis port of anything over TG-16, even CD. The End.

I'd have to agree, I do like the concept, and the info, but Nintega Grafx-16 is making too damn many of these now. Next thing we know, there will be 100 separate comparison threads, one pc engine vs. other systems thread would be more logical.

Why not just make one thread with multiple game comparisons?

You must not have played AfterBurner and OutRun then. PCE Chase HQ is better than the Genesis Chase HQ 2 as well (I know they're different games). Atomic Robo Kid is better on PCE as well. It's the exception, not the rule, but there are some good ones.

Altered Beast and (especially) Golden Axe are leagues better on the Genesis of course, among others.

Why don't we do another comparison of a different game?

Dragons Lair NES vs Dragons Lair (Arcade)

Dragons Lair NES
+ Better Graphics
+ Fun to Play
+ Lots of Levels
+ Game is NOT Hard
+ Better Animation

Dragons Lair (Arcade)
- Jerky movement of Dirk
- Poor audio especially for it's time
- Slow pace game
- Game didn't stand out for me
- Animation sucks

WINNER: Dragons Lair NES

Outrun, Space Harrier, and After Burner are far better on TG16/PCE than Genesis, and Power Drift is good too and wasn't on any of Sega's consoles that generation. Yes, Golden Axe and Altered Beast are no good on PCE and PCECD, but that doesn't mean ALL of the Sega games on PCE/TG16 were bad. The rest were much better (Shinobi and Fantasy Zone are the other two I can think of, and both are okay I think).

Indeed. Outrun, Space Harrier, and After Burner really are far, far better on TG16 than Genesis. Sega's "scaler" engine somehow was terrible for years on the Genesis, which really was very unfortunate considering how many "scaler" games they had... Turbo Outrun, Outrunners, Thunder Blade, and Galaxy Force II would also all have been better on TG16 had versions of them existed, I'm sure. They don't, but PCE Power Drift does, which is kind of interesting. Obviously it's not as good as the arcade or Saturn versions, but it's pretty good considering the hardware it's on! They didn't even try that one on Genesis, and somehow skipped Sega CD and 32X too despite that they could have done a better job. Neither TG16 or Genesis have hardware sprite scaling, but NEC just had a better software scaling engine than Sega.

The only Genesis game from Sega I can think of with really good scaling is Outrun 2019... that one looks great. But almost all of the others, not so much.

I mean, yes, sometimes Genesis versions were better. The Genesis was in some ways more powerful. But always better? Absolutely not.

As well as Lords of Thunder, Forgotten Worlds, Raiden, and a bunch of other ports. Greg2600, ignorance is bliss

I like SNES Raiden, sure it's slow and easier, but it's got 2 player simultaneous, unlike the Genesis, TG16, or PCECD versions, and it's pretty much the same great game... :)

Space Harrier wasn't released on Genesis. It got the sequel, and the original was ported to 32X some years after that.

Thunder Blade was actually released on the PCE, and it's actually pretty decent.

Art of Fighting Genesis vs PCE ACD
World Heroes 2 Genesis vs PCE ACD
Fatal Fury 2 Genesis vs PCE ACD
Forgotten Worlds Genesis vs PCE SCD
Darius 2 Sagaia Genesis vs PCE SCD
Strider Genesis vs PCE ACD
Rainbow Islands Mega Drive vs PCE CD
Hellfire Genesis vs PCE CD
Raiden Genesis vs PCE CD

Pretty much all of the games above are better in my opinion on the PC Engine

[QUOTE=staxx;1724677Strider Genesis vs PCE ACD[/QUOTE]

I have to disagree right here. While the graphics are more true to the arcade game the animation of the PCE version sucks. Most of the time you'll be attacking and Strider will just be sliding across the ground rather than the slash and his body being animated seperately. Also the colors are a little washed out compared to both arcade and Genesis.

Audio on the PCE owns the Genesis and Arcade versions though.

Of course in my opinion, Strider on the NES beats out all versions. Entirely different game but more enjoyable in my opinion.

I agree about Strider for the Genesis/PCE. The graphics are a bit darker (but more detailed on the PCE for the most part). But that's not what ultimately makes the ACD version (if you can even call it that) poor. It's the iffy gameplay mechanics. Having played the Genesis and Arcade versions a lot BITD, the ACD versions feels sloppy like a beta. I mean, it lacks polish in other areas but those aren't the deal breaker, they just add to the main fault of the game. Funny, in that pic line up - the PCE one actually looks good (which is misleading).

Cool, I missed that one... better than the Genesis Super Thunder Blade too, I imagine.

Space Harrier wasn't released on Genesis. It got the sequel, and the original was ported to 32X some years after that.

Super Thunder Blade is also technically different from Thunder Blade (well, it's partially different; only some levels are new, I believe), but in both cases the games are very, very similar... and with how awful the Genesis scaling is, the fact that the games are partially new doesn't come even close to making me want to play them versus the many better versions of the original titles out there, from the TG16 versions on up.

I like the Genesis a lot, overall I probably do prefer it to the TG16, PCE, whatever (though the TG16 is a great system as well), but Sega's scaler games are definitely not among the reasons why, that's for sure. Only Outrun 2019 and the 32X games do it well.
