Sounds alright. The gimmick sounds relatively subdued, which is a good thing.

When has Sonic not been saving aliens?

Well I'm glad they are giving it another go on Wii (and especially DS, I've enjoyed all of those).. Sci-fi amusement park???

Sigh...being a Sonic fan these days is like being HIV positive and trying to be hopeful about your future.

Here's hopin

When has Sonic not been saving aliens?

Probably ever since Sonic turned into a werehog, and became a mid-evil knight. Or you can just attribute this to Sega seeing the popularity of the Mario Galaxy series, and hoping to cash in on the space themed platformer infatuation going on right now.

It actually doesn't sound too bad. It seems like just Sonic and Tails from the trailer, and the game's gimmick doesn't seem soul-shatteringly stupid like the Werehog. I'm cautiously optimistic about this, which is roughly the highest level of excitement I can muster up for a new Sonic game these days.

They claim 2D gameplay, which already makes this sound better than most 3D Sonic games.

The little animals are highly reminiscent of Flickies though.

I hope it's good, but I'm not holding my breath.

I forgot about those, or more likely I blocked those out. I remembered about Sonic X where he's on earth and there were people, but for every early game he was on another planet saving aliens. The most recent games I've played were the handheld ones for the Gameboy Advance and DS, for a console game it would have to be the Genesis games.

I also don't get that werehog bit.

Werewolf = Manwolf

Werehog = Manhog

It makes no sense the way they named it!

That's what I was thinking, it seems much like the earlier games.

I'm not saying it will be bad because of it, it might actually be better since it's more like the earlier games. I just didn't get the marketing of aliens, it's like advertising this game as the one where Sonic runs fast.

OMG Sonic's a MAN! Maybe that's why it was acceptable for him to f*** that princess in the 360 game.

You realize we haven't seen a second of gameplay yet. I'll wait for E3 in a few weeks to see how this may turn out. But at the very least we still get Sonic 4!

I will bet monies that it will suck.

It's a current sonic game, how can it NOT suck?

It could be worse. Imagine being a Mega Man fan earlier this decade... >_<

Sonic is suffering from Pokemon syndrome, from a demographic standpoint. Pokemon is consistently marketed to the 6-10 age range, to establish a steady stream of long-term fans. Sonic shoots more for the 10-12 range. Neither franchise has any intention of growing the product with the fans. They've practically admitted that their intent is for you to grow out of it as a new generation picks it up. This announcement further confirms that fact. As long-term fans, this sounds idiotic. To the kids just growing into it, this is going to seem cool.

Yeah. Not too bad of a fall for Sonic fans. Goes from just decent games to poor games.

Sonic Fan: This isn't much worse than the Sonic games we've had for the Genesis. I'll buy it.

Mega Man Fan: What the hell? The Mega Man series was amazing and now it's terrible. Give me Legends 3 and I'll forgive you Capcom.

Final Fantasy Fan: This game sucks. Atleast the graphics are nice.

I am hopeful for this. I may not buy it on day one, but I will end up getting it sometime and then later telling people if it sucks, hehehe

The development of Sonic games these days seems cyclical.

Game is released, gets slammed by critics and fans, Sega apologizes, starts another Sonic game. Populace gets hopeful.

*note: Not 100% true, the Rush games are decent enough.

I am not sure what to think about Sega and their Sonic franchise. They definately need to take a break with their #1 mascot and put him into some quality home console titles. I am hoping that Sonic 4 is good. I need to see actual gameplay before I determine my stance on this title.

I think there is no hope for the Sonic series now. The reason why Sega keeps making them is because the furries and rabid fanboys keep on buying them no matter how bad they are. I am pretty sure the company knows that for a fact so they make the new Sonic games totally badly programmed/glitchy on purpose.

B-but, they're promising a fresh canvas! With no gimmick necessary! ;__;

Sonic Team Talks Sonic Colours
Source IGN http://wii.ign.com/articles/112/1127004p1.html

excerpt- Takashi Iizuka on Appealing to Mario Fans
"From a general game design perspective, in recent years we've been able to introduce Sonic to new fans, a lot of the Nintendo/Mario fans, and because of that, we've made changes to the design, and we've designed things in Sonic Colours that we think will really appeal to people who are unfamiliar with the Sonic brand and the Sonic gameplay. So from that perspective we hope that fans of Mario will really be able to enjoy playing as Sonic in Sonic Colours."

"We're taking this franchise that was designed to be the antithesis of Mario and changing it to appeal more to Mario fans."

Not surprising given SMG was hailed as being practically perfect and sold over 7 million copies. I don't even like Mario games that much, but I loved it!

The first reviews are starting to come and they're all generally very positive. Been seeing scores of over 80%.

I'm never that fussed over review scores but it is pleasing to see after Sonic being bashed these past few years.

Oh dear, Sega is really digging a bigger grave for poor Sonic :(
