I use my Game Boy Player almost daily and I love almost everything about it except having to use the GameCube controller. I know it's possible to use a GBA as a contoller but I'm not crazy about the idea of switching back and forth between the GBA and the GameCube controller in order to access the player menu.
Is there anything out there, official or otherwise, comparable to the Wii Classic Controller available for the GameCube?

Well there is a controller called the Game Boy Player Controller! It was made by Hori and was marketed as that in the U.S. I believe it sometimes goes under the name Hori Digital Controller in Japan.
Anyway, finding one is going to be tough. They didn't sell well and thus are going to be hard to find for a good price. It may be easier to find a Japanese version of the controller.
Here's is what you are looking for: http://www.hori.jp/us/products/ngc/gbp_con/index.html

I had heard about that but according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_Player#Third_party_controllers) it was only made available for the Japanese market. Have you ever seen one in the flesh?

The Modern Gaming section on the floor below you says hello.
Also, I wish their was an adapter to use the SNES controller for this. That'd make GBA games a breeze.

Sorry for the blatant advertising, but is SNES or NES -> GC adapter something that would work? http://www.retrousb.com/index.php?cPath=22 I don't know if the lack of analog stick would be a problem.
edit: and I type too slow, BetaWolf beat me :)

Doubt it. I never use the analog stick on GB Player. The Hori Game Boy Player controller itself doesn't even have one.
Oh yeah, here's another option if you don't mind wasting batteries.

The Hori GBP controllers are fantastic, and yes, they were released in the US. I stumbled upon two of them at GameCrazy a few years ago for $10 a pop, needless to say I bought them both :)

Bleh, I've never, ever seen one of the US releases. Annoys the heck out of me.

Would you be willing to part with it?

I found a couple of them on eBay but they're not cheap. Search "Hori GameCube".

I like the sound of this very much but I wonder how it would work with the GBP, as it makes use of the Z button for menu interaction. I imagine at best it would require the simultaneous use of the NGC controller in another port for menu operation. Can anyone confirm this?

The GameCube Z button is mapped to the SNES Select button on the RetroPort, so menus shouldn't be a problem. I do not have a GBP so you may want someone else to confirm.

I have the Hori pad and I can confirm that Select is the same as Z.

That's not the question. He's asking what the Select button is mapped to on the SNES to Gamecube adapter from RetroUSB.

That was already answered.
Anyway, you can buy an adaptor that will connect the wii classic pad to a GC port, but I've never used one myself.
I do have a PS2->GC adaptor that works great with Dualshock1 pads, although I don't like using it with the Dualshock2 because of how hard you need to press the shoulder buttons in order to register the 'click' that you get from the GC triggers.
