This has been done for the PC Engine but I'm really in need of a list for the Dreamcast. That is, a list of games that are EXCLUSIVE to Japan but do not require understanding of the Japanese language. I have a few such games, so I'll start the list here.

Cleopatra Fortune
Communication Logic Battle Daisessen (a Battleship-style game)
Cool Cool Tune
Cosmic Smash
DDR 2nd Mix
DDR 2nd Mix: Club Version
Fighting Vipers
Fire Pro Wrestling D
Get!! Colonies
Giant Gram 2000 (wrestling)

Are you counting games that can be seen in the US in some form? Because King of Fighters 2000 and 2001... and 2002 for that matter could technically go on the list.

Yeah, like Twinkle Star Sprites, which was a Neo-Geo game as well. As long as the game wasn't already released in the US (even if the name has changed).

This is a GREAT idea, Joe! I've been trying to compile a list myself, since I just started to get into DC imports. I would think that puzzle games would do nicely as far as not needing to understand the language... I have found the following titles that may fit the bill... If I am wrong, feel free to correct me... I am only going by the descriptions I found, and they were pretty incomplete... Let me know what you think...

Logic Battle Daisessen
Dynasty
Puzzle Bobble 4
Hello Kitty Magical Block
Hello Kitty Lovely Fruit Park
Hello Kitty Cosmic Smash
Tetris 4D
Super Puzzle Fighter II
Musapey's Choco Marker
Cleopatra Fortune
JahMong
Pro MahJong Kiwame D

All I would ask is that you don't GUESS. Because if you guess and I buy the game and it turns out to be in Japanese, I'm going to be very unhappy.

Example: MahJongg games in English? I'm having a hard time believing that.

Super Puzzle Fighter II and Super Puzzle Fighter 2x are the same thing, aren't they? (I think the original arcade game was called Super Puzzle Fighter II X in Japan and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo in the US.)

Perhaps I misunderstood you... I think what I am TRYING to say is that these are probably games where the text language does not matter, as opposed to games such as RPG's or Dating Sims, where knowing the Japanese language is INTEGRAL to playing the game. That is, if you know how to play Mah Jong, you can just play away...

I don't know the answer to this. Butta mentionst "2x", MarkM mentions "II". I'm just transcribnig at this point.

Yea, they are the same thing. It's actually Super Puzzle Fighter 2x for Matching Service. Super Street Fighter 2x and Vampire Chronicle also both have the 'for Matching Service'

Anyone have anything to add? I'm moving this over to the Classic Forum with our other lists for future discussion and reference.

Puyo Puyo 4 would be a good one :)

I'm still hunting. Looks like Communication Logic Battle Daisessen plays just fine without knowledge of Japanese.

Recently acquired Rainbow Cotton, that's just fine for English-speaking proles like me.

C'mon, there's gotta be more. Don't make me have to go through them all systematically! Save a brother a dime!

How about a small description for all of them as well? For instance, I know Border Down is a shooter, but without investigating I have no idea what Dynasty is, but I'm guessing strategy.

I'd personally disagree with the inclusion of Fire Pro Wrestling D. Without a lot of consultation of online FAQs, you're going to struggle through the menu system. I notice you've got Giant Gram 2000 - don't forget the prequel, which I think is just called Giant Gram.

Damn.. I'm going to end up hooking my DC up again - I can't remember how playing Treasure Strike and Tokyo Bus Guide are. @_@

I meant 'playable', not 'playing'. Is there an edit feature on here? :D

How about:

Get!! Colonies
Cool Cool Toon

Both have menus in Japanese, but are easy to navigate (especially Get!! Colonies). I know zero Japanese, and can navigate the options OK. Some things in CCT might require some trial-and-error, but, you'll get it. The actual gameplay requires no Japanese.

Now, in CCT, you'll miss the text of the story (in story mode), but, I just skip over that.

Any other thoughts on whether these 2 games qualify?

Joe:

Add Fighting Vipers 2 and Rez

and remove

Puzzle Bobble 4 which is the same as Bust A Move 4 in US.

Fighting Vipers 2 and Rez aren't exclusive to Japan - they both got PAL releases.

I'm going to list them anyway, for those US folks who are "importing" but don't care where from.

There must be more!

How about the Pop N Music & DDR games? I'm not quite sure how many of each there were released though, but there certainly weren't any PAL releases for them and I'm guessing no to US too?

I don't own any of them for import Dreamcast. None of them were released in the US, but you probably knew that since you have access to the complete list here:

Umm.. I was just about to check that.. honest. ;)

I've got Pop N Music 2 and that plays just fine without any language barrier and I'd be amazed if a DDR game was impossible to play.

I don't know if it counts or not, but I got the japanese version of "Daytona 2001" and some golf game. When I play the daytona game the book and menu prompts are Japanese but the gameplay is in English (when it does the countdown, the rolling start current position)

The Golf game on the other hand, it's about 90% in Japanese but the mechanics of the game are similar to most other golf games. It was fairly easy to fumble through the setup though.

There are some more network games... can anyone else verify these?
Netto de Tennis (but a network game anyway)
Netto Golf (another network game)

What about the Golf Shiyou series (Let's play Golf) later came as Tee off here? But the sequels still came out in Japan with some packs. I haven't played the sequel. Can anyone else help?
- Golf Shiyouyo 2
- Golf Shiyouyo Adventure Hen
- Golf Shiyouyo Kouryaku Pack
- Golf Shiyouyo Survival Hen

I hope this helps.. and you guys will know if any of these came out here. I was in Japan at the time... and some of my titles here were mentioned as I wrote this message.. You might want to double check these titles as whether they are truly Import friendly..

I got several Japanese games last week (thanks to GaijinPunch great trader BTW) and I've been hooked on that golf game. I 'll check the title as welll as the other 6 or 7 games I got.

A local game shop has an import copy of Tech Romancer for $30 and I'm very tempted to pick it up. Is this game in English whatsoever? I realize I can get the US version for about the same price but wanted to see if the Japanese copy incorporated any english text.
