Hello, just registered to digital press tonight after the excitement went through my veins after getting a snes cart to play Star Fox 2 tonight!

So I am here to share and hopefully connect with some of you.
I am a long time classic arcade enthusiast who repairs the monitors that run in them on a daily basis. Now, the classic console games which are in my blood have taken off full force again just as it did in my younger years. Maybe the star fox thing is nothing to you guys I don’t know... I am unseasoned participating in the classic console culture vs. most of you.

I have been putting this star fox project off for some time.
Finally took the day to have at it and it’s a success.
The game is beautiful!

Excuse my de-cased snes. It’s just floating their on a book.
It’s a parts snes that I had lying around.

It took some time to put it all together.
All assembled in a clean manner... those wires are not going anywhere.
If any of your guys are dying to play on real hardware shoot me a pm and I wouldn’t mind making some more of these to go around.

Glad that I will be hanging around digital press. Another part of me found home tonight :)...

Wow that's crazy work there.

Isn't there already someone that does SF2 repros? I could be wrong.

Welcome to the club!

Yeah, no rain on the OP's parade (this is cool regardless!), but I've seen repros on eBay for a while now.

Is this different in any way?

Have you ever heard of personal accomplishment?

No I haven't - please explain it to me. I am ever so stupid.

I ask because obviously the OP is creating this to possibly sell, and I was curious to know if anything's been done different to the existing ones I've seen around already (which are of quite high quality).

If the OP's going to be selling this for less, or something like that, or created these through a different method, then I am curious to know hence my question "is this different in any way?"

Man....what an ass I am - asking a question!

The cool thing is they did it themselves and didn't have to pay $100 for it.

Nothing wrong with asking a question, but the OP came here to mainly talk about his accomplishment and your post came off a little rude. He didn't make this specifically for the purpose of a sale. He simply offered to make some more if people are interested.

OP posted his business telephone number and commerical web site address. This is what led me to believe this is what suggested this was likely to be saleable item.

My original post wasn't intended as disparaging, but as a query about a potential product. However I apologise if it came across as anything harsh, as that wasn't my meaning.

Awesome achievement!

I've seen some SF2 go from the cheapest around $60ish - regularly $100. The wires do appear to need some finessing if you plan on producing these for the public, that's the only criticism I have, if you are indeed asking for opinions, but personally I wouldn't mind a cart like this. Kudos, and welcome to DP where this type of work is appreciated very highly. :)

Very cool! I would definitely be interested in a repro of this bad boy. Good job, man.

Yeah, making a repro shouldn't be too bad if you know how to solder. The instructions are here:

Thanks for all the kind words.

Right now I am going to go with $50 shipped for this fox-2 cart. I will likely do a run of 10-20 units and post when ready with price. eta 3-8 weeks. I will play with the #'s as it goes. I am looking into obtaining the actual memory with the exact same package specs for a perfect fit! I can find 4mb ones however no 8mb. I do have the equipment to mount such surface mount devices. That way, you have a perfect cart internally... no stringing the wires together.

The ribbon cable approach looks hideous in my opinion. The wire I use is hair thin and is easy to move about. For people who want to take on something like this you’re in for a treat if you have little or minor experience soldering. I have soldered every day for over 5 years and I will tell you now this is advanced soldering. You need a good iron and tools to remove the maskrom. Then the rest is very fine point soldering where years of experience with the contact iron comes into action.

I just ordered a doom cart... not saying it will run faster but you never know... Since the doom cart uses the fx-2 chip vs. fx-1 in this. Not saying it runs bad, because it doesn’t. Plays like a finished game to me! I will report findings.

$50 is definitely a resonable deal for Star Fox 2. Are you also planning on doing a nice color version of the cartridge label?

If anyone wants this cart from pics for $35.00 shipped its yours..
I will use the funds for the next project.
researching using a sop32 to fit the pcb footprint exact instead of using dip eprom.
**update, doesnt look like sop32 will work.. checking into tsop or plcc..** looking for good way to apply to cart.. a adaptor would rock!

as for labels, no.. no plans im not a label guy. :)
The ones I am using now are thermal printed so no ink smear.

paypal chad@arcadecup.com and I will ship out today.

If you don't want to mess with labels, don't, but they aren't that big a deal.

http://www.gamereproductions.com/products/Game-Label%7B47%7DSticker.html $02.75 for a label is pretty sweet, and they come pre-cut, ready to stick.

As far as using a doom cart... do a little research ;)
http://www.liquidninjas.net/bbs/showthread.php?t=13388

Read the whole thread... it's worth it. The most important part, concerning using Doom and other carts, is near the end of the thread. If you don't feel like reading... meh: basically, don't use Doom, instead use Stunt Race FX and overclock the FX1. The thread details how.

Edit: Oh, and I'll make it even easier for labels: here's the one I made. (I don't think the official release of SF2 would have used that terrible mock-up everyone uses for their SF2 labels. It seems hastily done. So I modified the SFC SF box art and slapped a 2 on it lol.)

Received the cart yesterday. Everything works flawlessly. Already completed the game through on easy and everything was great. Thank you much!
