The 7800's sound is pretty pooey in relation to it's graphics capabilities.

Worst Sound Ever Award indisputibly goes to the R-Zone. A cacaphony of fire alarms and clock radio alarms is less annoying.

The Microvision isn't exactly an orchestra, either. And have you ever heard a Channel F in action?

I gotta go with 7800. As the successor to the 5200, it just shouldn't of had worse sound. I mean, you shouldn't take 1 step forward, and 2 steps back.

That's exactly what I was thinking. And Pressure Cooker, for good measure.

i gotta go with the Genesis here... i will often play SNES counterparts simply because the sound is not nearly as atrocious on the SNES as on the Genesis...
Best example: pop in Street Fighter Championship Edition and weep at the sounds it makes....

Both original GameBoy Castlevania titles. Those compositions made the most of the sound hardware. Operation C's music was great too.

The guy who has a name which rhymes with Phantasy Star says the Genesis had bad sound?
The problem here is that you're playing games which had counterparts on the SNES. You can't expect a game with sound programmed for the SNES to sound good on a system that doesn't allow custom samples in music. On the other hand, a game programmed specifically for that system (Revenge of Shinobi is finally growing on me, but I've always liked Shinobi 3) sounds good.
It's good sound, if you can appreciate mid-1980s Capcom and Konami arcade sound.

7800 and maybe...NES

NES? Not even close. Castlevania 1, 2 (well, if you can stand the repetition) and 3; Contra/Probotector, Super C/Probotector 2, Gradius, heck that's just Konami stuff. Nintendo's very own Legend of Zelda sounds great even today, and Fire Emblem + Fire Emblem Gaiden sound alright too.
Even Ghosts'n Goblins has good sound (with a few exceptions). Even the ancient Wild Gunman (c. 1984) has an enjoyable soundtrack (though being composed pretty well doesn't hurt at all).

and despite my lack of respect for genesis sound... i have more genesis games than i do for any other system... but no phantasy star! maybe i should fix that...
and i will admit that certain games did use what the genesis COULD do to their advantage, in particular i like the sounds/music in vectorman and rocket knight adventure
of course, just recently i tried playing Beyond Oasis, and more than anything else in the game, the sound pissed me off. it was literally painful for me to listen to.

My Wonderswan Color sounds like my dog peed in the speaker. I only play it with the headphone adapter.

You must not have played Moon Patrol then. Man, that music rocks. No pun/sarcasm intended.
I agree with Genesis. Man, that's just atrocious.

Man, compare it with the SMS (in sound quality) and the NES is a shit...

I've only played a few SMS games and it seems to me the sound just isn't as good as the solid NES sound setup. Honest.
Genesis, well, again...there's a lot of decent soundtracks for that thing; I think that composers managed to hold the compositions near the quality of SNES for the most part.
Nothing that can compare with a really good Amiga SID track, though. Little compares to Track 4 from The Last Ninja, or the Ghouls'n Ghosts soundtrack (like the synthetic thunderstorm). Wow.

Whoa, to me it's just stupid to compare the Genesis and SNES, because they're different systems with different strengths and weaknesses. SNES came out a full 2 YEARS later than Genesis, and that makes a difference. Scaling and rotation. More colors, higher resolution. Much better sound. But SLOW. Play Streets of Rage 2 and tell me the Genesis FM chip sucks. 3 proved to be too for it to handle and its limitations REALLY stood out, but I will argue to my dying days that Kuzo's music on 2 and 3 sounds REAL. Thunderforce 3. Phantasy Star IV. Revenge of Shinobi.
Street Fighter II on Genesis was TOO MUCH for it. Come on, converting SFII to a home console circa 1989?? Duh. They were trying to compete with SNES, and to me it was obvious they shouldn't have tried. Not what the Genesis was meant to do.
The NES had a crappy sound chip, couldn't handle many different sounds, but those music composers sure wrote cool shit in spite of that. Hip Tanaka, Blaster Master, Bionic Commando, River City Ransom, Rygar, etc. Music from those games stuck with me for a dozen years, so I obviously didn't care how good or bad the sound was.
GB games do sound primitive, but I like the sounds and music on my GBC games.
