View Full Version : Is anybody going to jump on the 3D bandwagon? It's starts up very soon

Sony is going to make it's 3D firmware available in Japan, starting on Monday June 10th. Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD and Pain are going to get updates. Motorstorm 2, might also have an update, but the only way you get it is by buying a specific Sony Bravia. Supposedly, the updates for Wipeout HD and Super Stardust HD are free, with Pain requiring a fee to unlock the 3D option. All of this info is for Japan, because I don't believe there has been an official announcement yet in the US. My guess, is that Sony will delay it till their e3 press conference, and then announce that it's available "Today", ala Steve Jobs.

It's expected that MLB 10: The Show, Little Big Planet and Killzone 2 will also have 3D firmware updates coming soon. It's going to be interesting to see how Sony handles this in the US, in terms of charging for specific updates, or bundling them only with certain Bravias. Personally, I think that would be really lame on their part, but you know they're going to do it.

As for Microsoft and 3D, the big problem is that hdmi is a requirement. There are an awful lot of Xbox 360 systems in the wild without an hdmi port. Still, Microsoft recently signed a deal with Samsung to supply 6 stereoscopic 3D games to Korea. No announcement was made stateside, but again, I think that with e3 so close, these companies would rather just save the announcement for e3, hoping that people didn't already hear about it elsewhere.

Is anybody going to try to jump on this bandwagon?

Yes, when 3d becomes more affordable. The first thing I'll buy for 3d will be the Nintendo 3ds. Then, once tv prices on 3d get to a reasonable to cheap price, I'll get one, but in no hurry, as there's not much media I care for yet that make use of this technology.

I hate 3D anything. It's still 2d, just 2d images on different planes. It's annoying and I can't wait until this bullshit dies out.

Amen to that. 3D adds nothing to the content. Next thing ya know they'll be bringing back smell-o-vision.

I'm thinking about trying out Nvidia's 3D system when I build my next comp (which will probably be beginning of next year depending on when Intel releases Sandy Bridge). Asus is coming out with a 27" 3D monitor that won't break the bank ($550 supposedly). I'm just not positive if the Nvidia setup would work with the PS3 system, though I don't see why not.

I am working on an immersive gaming experience where every time you get hurt in a game it fires a tungsten pellet into your crotch at 1200fps. Cant tell you any more than that.

When you talk about 2D images just on different planes, that sounds to me like the 2D to 3D conversion. In other words, taking something that was originally 2D, and converting it to 3D. Yes, that is lame. An example of that would be Clash of the Titans. That was originally a 2D movie, that they converted to 3D via post-processing. True, legitimate 3D is much more impressive than that. Sure, it isn't exactly holodeck or anything, but it's way better than stuff like Clash of the Titans.

The vast majority of PS3 games that are going to be 3D initially weren't designed with 3D in mind, so it's likely that PS3 games coming out in 2011 or 2012 will look much better in 3D.

Until I don't have to wear 3d glasses to view it in 3d I really don't care.

Agreed 110%! Crap gives me a headache if I use it for more than an hour.

I'm going to purchase an LED and move my current HDTV in the living room within a year or so. Since nearly all LED tvs are 3d compatible that's the only reason I'm getting 3d.

This whole 3D thing is retarded. HDTV's haven't just gotten to the point in the last few years where most people can afford one, and now the electronics companies are trying to shove this down people's throats.

You forgot Toy Story Mania for the Wii and G-Force for PS3/360. Those were out before the Batman re-release. I played G-Force in 3D, but it was with the red/blue lenses and after a bit, it made my eyes/head hurt. Besides stuff only popped when I used the electric whip and blew up the bad guys.

The Batman AA game of the year edition is anaglphy (red/blue glasses type). Same thing with G-Force. That's old school 3D. I'm talking about modern day 120 hz, 60 frames to each eye, etc, etc. The real deal, digital stereoscopic 3D. Anaglyph is the kind that causes headaches.

Digital stereoscopic 3D can causes headaches and eye pain in users as well. I don't know that extensive studies have been done, but I know I have personally gotten headaches if I watch 3D content for over an hour or so and I have a number of friends and family members who have had similar experiences. The combination of heavy financial investment, the burden of wearing the glasses and the potential pain and discomfort for some users leads me to believe that this trend is dead before it ever begins.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is, I watched a 3D TV in Best Buy and the Sony store and wasn't too impressed. I really didn't notice that much of a difference unless water splashed on the screen, so count me out until it's like the 3D in the old T2 3D attraction at Universal, now that was mind blowing 3D.

3D doesn't do it for me either. But, just like every generation's "smell-O-vision", it'll soon die out. At least we can look on the bright side and refuse to view movies and such like this until the time comes.

I'd buy this over a 3DTV any day.

Until you can use 3DTV without glasses, I say screw that.

I feel the same way regarding mass acceptance. It just isn't going to happen. What's really amazing though, is that Sony is basically betting their entire company on 3D. The whole mantra of the company right now is 3D this, 3D that. If 3D is really dead on arrival, like you and many others think, then Sony is going to really get hammered on Wall Street. I'm not the gambling type, but maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to short some Sony stock right now, cause they are more gung ho on 3D becoming a force in the living room than any other company.

lessee...

i just recently got an hdtv, this generation's consoles weren't designed with 3d in mind, there's no industry standard for 3dtv's, and most of them require glasses of some sort.

call me when there's a standardized set that doesn't require glasses, doesn't give me headaches, and is less than $1000.

btw, several years ago i saw a samsung tv at hifibuys that had some kind of 3d tech without glasses. it wasn't full-on 3d, but it gave a nice depth-of-field effect to standard 2d stuff. it was about $5000 back then.

Sure, if I ever have a bunch of extra money to blow on building myself a new 3D gaming PC. Otherwise I'll be content to just consider adding a BluRay drive or two to my current system to get more use out of my HD monitor, and save up all my extra money for more new games and let the novelty wear off of 3D hardware before I buy any. It'll be alot cheaper after the initial fad hype dies down and all the e-penises quit arguing over whose 3D e-penis is the sexiest!

I'm old school so I was around for the original 3D bandwagon with Jaws 3-D. But today 3D doesn't impress me at all. Not only that, but I just bought my hdtv two years ago so it's going to be quite some time before I ugrade to a new tv. And when I do it won't be a 3D tv.

That's what all electronics companies do. There gets to be a tipping point when the audience for TVs is pretty much saturated, so it's up to them to figure out how they can get you to buy your next TV.

Consoles are really no different, it's just easier to market and sell the differences between generations because of the technology involved.

The 3D Bandwagon: "It's starts to FEEL ASLEEP!"

3D literally doesn't work for me, so I'm dreading the day that yet more limited development funds get taken out of making 2D screen tech better (this is an assumption of course) and wasted (from my perspective) on 3D. There may be some benefits bleeding over into 2D panels but I kinda doubt it.
