Hi everybody! I would like to make a portable handheld that can play just about any system using an attachment that pops onto the system.
Can I get some tips on how to make systems smaller with different
parts and into a certain shape, as well as a main unit that can take it?

It would be much easier if you just bought a portable console that emulates games. The chances of even a master engineer and electrician being able to do that is low.

There is a guy doing it on benheck forums http://moddedbybacteria.wordpress.com/multi-platform-console-system-projects/multi-platform-system/

Get the smallest netbook with a cdrom you can find and run emulators. That's about the best I can think of really.

A few years ago Kevin Horton (kevtris, .nsf, bankzilla) was working on something involving FPGAs to emulate full hardware sets, but the cost of production was cost-prohibitive. Your best bet is software emulation on an existing platform. You won't be able to plug in carts, but flash memory is so cheap that it won't matter.
