I have a number of episodes of a particular TV show in DivX format which I sometimes watch on my 360 via either PC connection or USB thumb drive. If, for some reason, I happen to not be logged in to Xbox Live I always get a prompt saying that a "media update" is required to view the file, thereby requiring me to be online in order to watch. If this just happened once I'd have thought nothing of it, but the fact that I get prompted like this every single time for identically codec'd DivX files makes my spider-sense get a little tingly.
Can anyone explain what's really going on here? Is this "media update" a patch to enable functionality or is it some form of Orwellian DRM? If it's a patch, is there some way to get it and keep it? Is there some way to watch these digital files on a 360 without necessarily calling the mothership in Redmond every time I want to do so?
