View Full Version : Is my 360 spying on my DivX library?

I have a number of episodes of a particular TV show in DivX format which I sometimes watch on my 360 via either PC connection or USB thumb drive. If, for some reason, I happen to not be logged in to Xbox Live I always get a prompt saying that a "media update" is required to view the file, thereby requiring me to be online in order to watch. If this just happened once I'd have thought nothing of it, but the fact that I get prompted like this every single time for identically codec'd DivX files makes my spider-sense get a little tingly.

Can anyone explain what's really going on here? Is this "media update" a patch to enable functionality or is it some form of Orwellian DRM? If it's a patch, is there some way to get it and keep it? Is there some way to watch these digital files on a 360 without necessarily calling the mothership in Redmond every time I want to do so?

My best guess is that it's DRM protected, and the license is attached to another console. In such instances, you are required to be connected to live to use said content.

If you had a previous Xbox that died, and you first downloaded this update to that, try following this process: http://www.xbox.com/en-us/support/systemuse/xbox360/licensemigration/

I have the same issue,

Already transferred all the licenses from my old to my new Xbox.. But it's only when I am streaming videos from my PC.

The divx addon only works when you're signed into Live. Period.

And yes, there is NO REASON why they could not log the filenames you play.

This is why (well one of the reasons) I just said fuck it and use a Media PC.

I think I found a fix for this.

I logged on using my son's Silver account, then downloaded the "Optional Media Update" under his profile. This apparently transferred a new license. I was then able to be signed out of either profile and load DivX files without the update prompt.

On balance it seems to be more of a technical issue than a Big Brother thing. Thanks for the assistance fellas.
