View Full Version : Wanted: SNES Prototype information

I've found that information on SNES prototypes is scattered around and not properly documented anywhere. I want to change that, by making articles on SNES prototypes on SNES Central. I've found tons of pictures of prototype carts, but what I am really looking for are ones that have been dumped, because games were made to be played, and it is hard to find the significance of a game without comparing it with released versions. I realize there are many prototype ROMs floating around on the Internet, but without knowing the source, it is hard to verify if they are actual prototypes, and not hacks/bad dumps/etc.

I got a demo of Sylvester and Tweety, and updated an existing article I had on the game.

Thanks again Evan. That Sylvester/Tweety game looks really good. Too bad it was never made, any idea if that's the final prototype? Games based on cartoons on SNES, 2D at its best.

Since you're asking for information, maybe you didn't know that the game's background artist has a ton of screenshots on his website (http://www.briansilva.com/art%20thumbs.htm)?

Didn't know about that at all, thanks! Too bad his main index page is throwing warnings of containing a malicious worm.

These look like in game shots, so could there be a finished prototype out there? His contact is Brian@BrianSilva.com (Brian@Briansilva.com)

Brian is a cool dude, and I really enjoy reading his design documents (also on the site). My favorite is the strip clubs document for Crank the Weasel.

What do you think the chances his email will still work?

I have done two prototype articles on recently dumped prototypes:

Tecmo Super NBA Basketball (http://www.snescentral.com/article.php?id=0989)

Super Mario All-Stars (http://www.snescentral.com/article.php?id=0796)

I'm not sure how helpful this is, but a Satellaview ROM dump I've released turned out to be a demo (as in, a proper "limited options teaser" style, rather than the Satellaview's normal "full game but it locks after 5 bootups" style) of Puyo Puyo Tsuu. I forget if you tend to check Satellablog, so let me link the article for you.

In terms of other Satellaview ROMs that appear to be demos, the "Super Famicom Wars BS Ban" ROMs seem to be such for the NP service editions.

I've also made an argument that the "BS Dragon Quest" ROM has behaviors that seem more "debug"-y than how the original Soundlink "BS Dragon Quest" series would've been distributed - in particular, having the 4 episodes playable from a single ROM in a menu with various other options.

If any of these are helpful for your prototype research, that'd be cool.

I really enjoy your Satellaview articles, if you ever want your updates linked on SNES Central, just make an account on the forum, and I can give you permissions to post on the front page.
