Forgive me if this has been posted before (I did a search for this, but found no mention of it)
In a January 1, 2010 podcast from 1Up.com (4 Guys 1 Up), Sega of America studio director Constantine Hantzopoulos mentioned that he and the development team Monolith were considering a new Streets of Rage game using the Condemned engine for their next project (at the time).
He stated that "Escape From New York" was the main inspiration for an open world (sandbox?) style game.
I wonder how that would've turned out. I'm assuming it would've been a 3rd person style brawler. Hmm...

If they made it like those 2.5D level previews I saw of the upcoming Splatterhouse, that would be awesome! Or those super nice 2D visuals akin to BlazBlue.

There have been several games in the past five years that were insired by Streets of Rage, or at least were based on the concept of a side-scrolling brawler. But when you do this kind of game in 3D it just doesn't work. I'm not sure why Sega can't resurrect the property on a handheld or as a new downloadable game and keep it in 2D.
(I'd mention the games that came out that were like Streets of Rage in 3D, but my mind is drawing a blank right now. I just woke up. And they weren't very memorable.)

Oh yeah, there's been some pretty good games in the style of SOR. Stuff like Urban Reign, Beat Down: Fist of Vengeance, Spike Out, etc.
But, it'd be nice to see something from SEGA themselves featuring the characters we all know and love.

Didn't they "almost" make Streets of Rage 4 for Dreamcast?

You guys should check out "Beats of Rage" for the Dreamcast. It's a homebrew title but totally awesome.

Final Fight Streetwise.
That was it! I knew it was a sequel to a property, but couldn't think of which one.

They almost did for Saturn, or so people say. (http://www.x-cult.org/games/120/Fighting_Force/719/Overview/)

I know about that, but there was also something for Dreamcast (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouKkNmaa8Ng). (Just found it)

I cried a little inside when I heard about this... I think Monolith could have done it some justice.
Surprised there hasn't been more chatter here about Streets of Rage 3D/SoR4/Judgment Force, released as Fighting Force. I have a copy of the Saturn Alpha build, and it really was very much like SoR. And when it came out as FF I played the crap out of that game, thought it was great. Controls are a bit wonky, but man is it satisfying once you get things down pat and start beating the shite out of endless punks. And all the destructable environments were rad.

I'm glad Fighting Force was not Streets of Rage 4. It's a bit generic. The moves and atmosphere don't feel like the moves and atmosphere of Streets of Rage. Plus, Yuzo Koshiro wasn't involved, which is just wrong.

I think we are going to see Streets of Rage sooner than later now that Sonic 4 is coming out as a 2D downloadable game. As long as this game sells, Sega will keep milking the retro bandwagon. They have publicly said that is the direction the company is going in, so Streets of Rage only makes sense.

While the Beats of Rage engine is awesome (I even modified the Hyper Final Fight game myself and now see it as a pseudo sequel), it's not really Streets of Rage. For THAT, check out Streets of Rage Remake from Bombergames. Now THERE'S something that is almost like a true sequel (even moreso when they eventually release Part 5)

Actually they made an official Streets of Rage 1/2 remake 1.5 for Mobile, JAVA, seems pretty popular in the east, New moves charas, bosses etc.
Also a remake of Shinobi for Mobile, also pretty cool, all done by SEGA and 3 party devs, I'd rate both games highly it's really disappointing they didn't make it for xbox live or DS :(, what the hell Sega?
EA's Simpson's arcade for Mobile is actually pretty decent it's nearly as good as the original and it's totally cool if a bit short.

In all honesty it would probably have looked and played nothing like the originals and only had its name in common. I'm of the belief that you can't just slap a name on a game and call it a sequel.

It'd better not turn out like Altered Beast! Or rather, Project Altered Beast.
You Americans didn't even get it. Your benefit, really.

I take it Street Fighter IV "doesn't work" either.
If you had said "playing beat-em-ups in first person doesn't work," maybe I'd agree with that.
Condemned wasn't bad at all, but the brawling was pretty basic. Action DOOM 2 is yet more basic (but also awesome at the same time).

The days when I used to play fighting force were awesome. I was repetitive but fun to kick ass over and over again. I never quite understood what was up with the second one though. I liked the multiplayer.
