Notice the ad mentions Wi-fi is included in the unit (Finally. Hello 2006).

Oh, and Natal is now "Kinect".

The image came from an advertising flash movie on an Italian site, not a still image. Whether they redesign the console's case or not, the important question is what they might have done internally.

Yeah. I dont care if it looks like the bloody Supergrafx as long as the internals are stable, well vented and fixed beyond belief... That and quietness.

Me neither.

It looks weird, but many hated the new look of the PS3.

It just takes time to get used to.

However, it does look like a rocket ship for some odd reason. That, or a deformed alienware case...one of those Chinese ripoff cases. LOL

The original 360 was never a looker either. This redesign isn't much worse.

If it increases reliability, brings down the price, and standardizes a large hard drive size, I'm all for it.

Sonicwolf

Im hoping that, if this is real, Microsoft will adopt a standard 2.5" HDD that is swappable and purchasable without it having to be an official Microsoft drive.

Nope there are no heat-generating processors under the DVD anymore. I rotated the leaked Valhalla motherboard pic so you can see how this will fit in the case. THe cpu/gpu are on one chip now and the fan lines up perfectly with those vents that can be seen towards the bottom of the new 'slim' case.

The so-called leak lacks the front ports on that so-called leak motherboard.

The leaked slim also bulges out where the ports are located on the Valhalla board so it could be there is a door that opens up to reveal the ports same as the Wii does it.

There does not seem to be any noticeable edges which would show a hatch of that sort.

Know for sure I guess tomorrow, but does seem more legit. I think the case look is a big improvement over the older ones. Also wonder if the HDD will be attached to the outside of the console, like the current ones?

Agreed. At this point I'm willing to take the plunge on a 360 model that I don't have to worry at all about regardless of what it looks like.

Yeah. I dont care if it looks like the bloody Supergrafx.

Now that might be a bit much. LOL

I'm guessing the look has to do with the HDD. They probably wanted to redesign it from the ground up while still making it compatible with the existing HDD design. That creates an obvious aesthetic issue. Though I do wish they had stuck with white. Black 360s never looked quite right to me. And I still miss the chrome on the disc drive.

Oh, and who wants to bet this redesign doesn't red ring? And when I say that I don't mean it will never fail. I mean that regardless of what stops working, a RROD will no longer be the sign of failure. The last thing MS needs is for even one person to say "My new 360 got the RROD."

poloplayr
06-14-2010, 04:12 AM
If this one actually works and doesn't have a 99.9% failure rate - I might considering picking this up for all the exclusive jap/RPG titles. Have stayed away from the 360 so far, since I don't like buying ill-produced items, regardless of whether it's a videogame system or a pair of shoes.

Don't have much of a choice in the matter if they were intent on keeping it compatible with existing HDDs. The alternative would have been an extra port with a special wire to connect to old HDDs rather than mounting them on the side. But that would have been pretty dumb considering the HDD is pretty much a necessary component for most people and wiring it up like the HD-DVD drive would be equally aesthetically unpleasing and annoying.

I'd take a "slimline" of near equal size that's just as compatible with all current accessories than an actual slimline with a completely different HDD design.

Dobie

I can only wonder how a slimline Wii would be.

Actually, make it more square, and the PC Engine would have a competitior for smallest game system.

$299 for a slim model 360 with a 250 hard drive, built in wireless and runs as quiet as a Vanilla Ice concert? Sign me up. I'm glad I heard off on paying $129 for the 250 gb hard drive. I'm getting this instead. Plus, looking at the new model at the show it looked much better than that still photo.

They are going to have to drop the price of the elites to get rid of them though. Probably just to $249 but thats better than nothing.

I have to say that this is a shocking and wholly unexpected development. Not only have they abandoned many of the basic design elements of the original 360, but they also eliminated potential expansion sales on the wi-fi adapter and hard drives. Not that I'm necessarily complaining, but I'm not totally sure why they went down this path unless they really couldn't fix the RROD and other problems other than through this total redesign.

Matching controller?
Cord ports all the same?

The drive is still removeable, it is just smaller and sits inside a covered slot on the side of the console.

As someone who is looking to jump into the PS3, I'm really waiting to see how Sony responds to this. Their 250GB console is $349 versus Xbox's $299, and the Xbox includes a faster wi-fi card. Granted, they still have Blu-ray, but I'd still expect some sort of price match. Or, while I dream, how about bringing back that backwards compatibility?

No, it is a smaller drive. You'll need a transfer cable to move data from your previous drive, or you can use flash drives through the USB ports. There's a nice Q&A on all the features on the Xbox forums:

So long, launch 360 :(

Still not impressed by the looks, but the internal hard drive, and Valhalla chipset, and the $199 price (minus the trade in on my original) sold me.

Unfortunately, no one has still verified if it's still MS's HD's, or an off the shelf SATA drive that will be "swappable".

It looks like it got run over by a car. I know it's the angle of the picture with the glare and all but the thing really does look crushed in.

But why did they remove the memory unit ports? I know most people don't use them but it seems like they just took them away for the hell of it.

They show the new internal drive in this video:

Looks proprietary, it's definitely not an off-the-shelf unit, but perhaps it is just outfitted in casing that will allow it to connect to the system? Given the small size and the shape, though, I'm 99% sure this is all Microsoft.

Yeah, I think a lot of people are going to see this as either a perfect time to finally get a 360 or, for current 360 owners, to buy into the peace of mind of having a well engineered one. But for me I have a few more reasons to take the plunge. I'm still rocking a 20GB model with no HDMI.

For those of you wringing your hands over a "transfer cable"...no need to fret anymore. The latest USB drive update made transferring a moot point. Your saves haven't been tied to Microsoft's ridiculous proprietary HD for a few months now.

Plus, saving to a USB drive and loading the save onto the new HD will be light years faster than the old HD to HD procedure. Those of you who did the whole 20 gig to 120 gig thing with that goofy cable know what I mean.

I'm buying it this weekend...if I can find one.

Microsoft hasn't gotten the d-pad halfway decent over the past 9 years. I doubt they will start now.

Dammit... That video doesn't make it very clear, either..

It's Microsoft who has been selling us overpriced standard laptop drives in a proprietary casing for the past 5 years. I'm sure it isn't going to be changing now.

Don't Xbox Live Arcade downloads have the transfer problem though? Where you need to be signed into Live to play them?

What transfer problem? You only have to be signed into XBL to play XBLA games if it isn't the console they were purchased on or if you haven't used the license transfer utility to transfer the purchase license to the new console.

I'd gladly exchange my old console for a newer one, but I've got a ton of stuff on my hard drive that needs to be transferred. That seems like it'll be a pain in the ass.

Hell, the built-in Wi-fi is enough for me to consider getting it... I wouldn't have to mess with any ethernet cables or anything...

Leo_A

Exactly...

And isn't there a once per year limit on the license transfer process?

Yes

And you also get a free transfer other then the once a year transfer ability any 360 owner has, whenever an official repair necessitates sending back a different console other then the one the licenses were matched to.

But how is this a problem of any significance? If you just recently did the transfer process and decide out of the blue to buy a new console, the worst that happens is you'll have to be logging in to play games for a few months until your able to redo it. Most people with a 360 and an active XBL account with XBLA games would be logging in anyways.

I'd gladly exchange my old console for a newer one, but I've got a ton of stuff on my hard drive that needs to be transferred. That seems like it'll be a pain in the ass.

They're not going to provide transfer cables that can be acquired? The transfer process going from a 20gig to a 120 gig hd was easy enough.

And unless you have a ton of video content, Xbox Originals, and 360 Games on Demand, it's pretty painless just redownloading stuff to a new console. Most XBLA content, patches, and DLC aren't terribly large files.
