View Full Version : Unemployed atm, oh what to play....

I've been unemployed since May 28 but I haven't really been in the mood for some classic gaming. Just been getting on XBL a lot. I have a lot of NES games to play. So, aside from the common NES titles, what would the folks here at DP recommend?

I hope you ask better questions than that in your job interviews.

Why don't you start with a list of NES games you might like to play, and maybe we can narrow it down? There are hundreds of games aside from the common NES titles, many of which appeal to entirely different tastes, and it's pretty hard to suggest something without knowing more about your preferences.

If your on XBL, they are running a HUGE sale on some downloadable games this week. I'd highly recommend Shadow Complex, usually a $15 game but now is only $7 this week (560 MS points). The genre is a 2D exploration side scrolling shooter but with 3D backgrounds / characters. Absolutely amazing, IGN gave it a 9.4 last year when it came out.

Check a video, you won't regret the purchase.

I recommend Top Gun. Can't go wrong with Tom Cruise!

I was in your situation about 1.5 years ago and asked myself that question.

Started playing through all the "time-intensive" games; i.e. RPGs.

But honestly, focus on getting a new job. I felt like shit after a few months...very depressed.

Yeah, don't get too into games that you get distracted from looking as hard as you can for a job. After a while being unemployed just gets depressing, the last time I was out of work I thought it would give me a chance to relax after eight years of daily stress from my old job, but a few months into it and I felt restless and depressed in a way that none of my video games could fix.

But I recommend Ducktales. It's a fun, bright, relatively easy game that cheers me up.

You really need to do other things besides play video games and look for work when you're unemployment, or yeah it gets really depressing really fast.

And without knowing what kinds of games you like, I can't really recommend anything.

Wall Street Kid (1 or 2). Learn how to make money and people happy the 80s way!

Without know what you like or what games you have, that would be my suggestion.

Don't grill the guy too hard with the "you shouldn't be playing video games, you should be out finding a job" lines. Being unemployed can be depressing enough, and it may be more important to find a release during down time while job hunting than goofing around during a typical "day off".

Not sure about NES games to recommend though, without knowing what you're typically into. Some of my favorite NES time wasters (covering a range of genres) would be Metroid, Tecmo Super Bowl, Dragon Warrior III, Dr. Mario, Contra, R.C. Pro Am, and the underrated (IMO) Magic of Scheherazade.

Play Contra and Life Force. They are both fun and relaxing(provided you use the Konami code). And make sure you keep actively looking for work--either online, in the paper or store to store. I went thru something similiar in 2008 and that entire month and a half I was unemployed sucked because I had to start selling parts of my collection to make rent. So keep searching and don't give up.

It's really easy to get a job in the Sims.

Man are you serious? I had just bought that 2 weeks ago, damn it all I knew I should have waited.

Been out and about all day. I play just about anything. What I really want to play is Earthbound but I don't have a copy. :\

Try Kickle Cubicle. It's one of my favorite NES puzzle games, and it actually gets quite challenging in the bonus levels which can be accessed after you complete the main part of the game.

I've always enjoyed trying to hit the level cap on Dr. Mario's highest difficulty. I've actually done it quite a few times, but it's enough of a challenge that I feel the need to celebrate every time it happens.

Snow Brothers is a fun game if you've got a friend to play with. It's almost as good as Bubble Bobble, in my opinion.

Gyruss can keep me in front of the television for hours on a good day.

Hm... Kabuki Quantum Fighter is worth playing through, even if it's over in an hour.

Kiwi Kraze is a great platformer, but I haven't actually managed to find a copy anywhere.

Rainbow Islands is like Bubble Bobble with rainbows, but it loses a few points for not having a two-player mode.

I love all of the Kemco-Seika games like Shadowgate, Uninvited and Deja Vu. I was always a fan of text adventures growing up, and these games were like text adventures with a graphical interface.

Shatterhand is kind of like the love child of Batman and Mega Man, with a bit of Ninja Gaiden thrown in. Unfortunately it's only about as good as Batman, but that game is still pretty good.

Yoshi is an interesting puzzle game, but it's easy to tell why it isn't a classic. It's fun to play, though.

If you're into Tactical RPGs. Brigandine or Arc the Lad 2. These two games will suck you right in up to completion.

Take a tactical RPG with class customization and such. Then add the world map system of Romance of the Three Kingdoms where you try and conquer the entire continent. The game is amazing and has tons of replayability. If you own it, then play it. If you don't own it then it's worth paying Ebay prices for.

Brigandine Grand Edition is rare and I doubt you'll be able to find it. If you don't already own it(most likely you don't,) then I'd suggest downloading it. It's Japanese only but very English friendly. It's an expansion on Brigandine. Same exact game but with cutscenes, multiplayer mode, anime sprites do the attacks on screen instead of going to a 3d battlefield to do the attack(which you can cut off the 3d battlefield on the original,) a couple new classes including characters that get their own special class, subtle changes like the Rock/Paper/Scissors instead of more damage vs opposites, better 2d graphics, and one new place added to the map.

Arc the Lad 2 is a very long tactical RPG with tons of sidequests that are actually fun to do and give backstory rather than being a chore. The battle system doesn't have any sort of mass customization but it's a lot of fan. Once you 100% the game or come close you'll probably put it down a couple years, but definitely worth playing. I actually had no job at the time I started the game and I didn't even think about playing another game until this was complete.

Also. Instead of looking for a new job why not experiment on selling currency and equipment on WoW? I've wanted to try to do that and see if I could make a living doing it. I know of someone who did though he said he only made $600 - $800 a month. I make over twice that and while money would be tight I could live off $600 - $800 a month.

Have you tried it? I'd think not having a real job would be more fun.

This thread is jokes...I say go for whatever you feel like playing...when you have all that time on your hands you pretty much have time to dedicate to almost any game of your liking...

What is your profession if you don't mind me asking...hopefull you get a job soon bro...

If I were you I'd test out all my games. Games I don't like go in one pile, games I think are mediocre but not exciting go in the middle pile, and the games I love the most go in the last pile. Putting them back on my shelf, the worst games go in the back and the best games go in the front. My bookshelf is deep enough to hold 3 rows of NES games per column.

I worked in a gas station. So no big deal on getting fired. Just time to get my butt back in school once again.

For me, it's hard to get back to work once I'm on some kind of a break. When I'm home(my job is 100% travel), I have to stay busy or I get too into video games...I'm sure most people here would agree with me that you need to keep your gaming in check or you're playing 15 hours of something without realizing it. Be careful!

That said, some recent games I liked were
Mass Effect, The Orange Box, Temple of Elemental Evil, Chrono Trigger DS, Dungeon Siege (PC). And some classics: Rygar, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy Origins (I prefer this one to the original NES version).

That game Shadow Complex that jonebone recommended looks pretty awesome too.
